Grammys and some other rambling

I watched part of the Grammys last night. I didn't really know who a lot of the people performing were - I don't listen to the radio very often, and when I do I tend to listen to the Vanderbilt station or the MTSU student run station. I really only watched because I wanted to see Amy Winehouse. She's so good, it's unfortunate that she's such a mess - but I liked how completely surprised she was that she won album of the year.

My husband and I have become obsessed over old episodes of "Match Game." They're re-run on the Game Show Network. I love how Richard Dawson always seems drunk, I don't think it was an act. I also LOVE Charles Nelson Reilly. My husband and I keep making jokes that we want to have a Match Game themed party and everyone would have to come dressed as their favorite Match Game personality. There's so many to chose from - Betty White, Esther Rolle, Brett Somers, Shelley Winters - it's like everyone was on at some point...you know it would be awesome.

Lastly, I'm getting more excited about the Juan Cole talk tonight. Should be good. The buzz around campus for it seems generally positive. There's also a book signing afterwards, I'm hoping a lot of people show for that, too.

I guess it takes all types of people to like all types of music. I consider myself to be very open minded about music and like many genres. However I am at a loss as to what people see or hear in Amy Winehouse and don't think I'm saying that because of her well publicized drug problems. I just don't get her singing and what is supposed to be so good about her. To me she seems mediocre at best.

Oh well different strokes for different folks.

I'm not actually a huge fan of hers - I only know the one song and she seems like a low-budget Holly Golightly (http://www.hollygolightly.com/). I think that if Winehouse didn't have the drug problems, no one would pay any attention to her - or at least not as much.

I love Amy Winehouse's music but I am kind of torn about her being awarded when it's so open about her drug use. I am afraid a lot of people will see her as a role model which is sad . . . the same way some people look up to Britney Spears. I would rather them look up to people like Taylor Swift or Carrie Underwood.

But I will say, Amy Winehouse has an amazing voice and her songs are great. I was also impressed with Kanye West's performance even though I can't stand him as a person but I liked the song he performed because it included Daft Punk who I love.

A "Match Game" themed party would be awesome! I watch a lot of the old reruns on GSN. My husband laughs and tells me that it doesn't take much to entertain me. But, you're right....there are so many game show personalities to choose.

I'm not going to be able to attend the Juan Cole talk tonight on campus. I was asked this morning if I could fill in for a co-worker tomorrow at the Nashville Area Career Fair being held at the State Fairgrounds that is being sponsored by our office. It seems my co-worker has been sick and is not able to attend. So......I need to get home at a decent hour and get my clothes ironed, get a good nights sleep etc in anticipation of a big day tomorrow.

Let me know how it goes though!

Later.......kim

I'm with you on that! My stepson said she looks like The Nanny, I ask if he was talking about the Trailer Park Trash Version.

P.S. No offense intended other than to her!

The best part about the Grammy's was the show following it. Brother's and Sister's! LOVE IT!

I love brothers and sisters too! Yay!

Me too, but I had to go to sleep and Tina Turners still got it...

The rendition of "Rhapsody in Blue" was awesome. Herbie Hancock can tickle them ivories!

Alicia Keys' "duet" with Sinatra was also very, very good.

Amy Winehouse reminds me of another sad figure in music history: Janis Joplin. An amazing voice, and an inexorable path to self-destruction.

Yes, I liked Alicia Keys and Ol Blue Eyes, but am I the only one that thought her live version of the song "No one" sucked? I love the recorded version of the song and I'm just not sure if she couldn't play it like that live or thought she was improving it the way she did it on the Grammys. I sure wasn't impressed.

Also I must disagree about Tina Turner. I didn't think she sounded good at all.

awwww Janis Joplin, there will never be another one like her, Stevie Nicks is the only person I feel has even come close.

I thought Tina Turner did really good considering the fact she is about 70 years old.

LOVED the Grammy's, the Across the Universe tribute to the Beatles was amazing. Foo Fighters and Maroon 5 winning...PRICELESS!!

Tina looks spectacular for being 70, hope I can shake it like that when I get that age.

Amy Winehouse winning was a big disappointment, it seems we love to reward bad behavior. I don't like her music and her voice sounds horrible. Yes Alicia Keys sucked too. and I could have lived without Fergie singing.

and Kanye had me in tears.

and the Vince Gill remark to Kanye..well it still has me giggling.

All in all it was a good night with not just one band or singer totally dominating.

and who would have EVER picked Herbie Hancock to win Album of the Year?

Re: Amy Winehouse...Herman Melville beat his wife but that doesn't mean Moby Dick isn't a literary masterpiece. And while it's sad that Winehouse has such bad personal problems, she's still made one of the best albums I've heard in awhile. My Blake incarcerated!

Re: Charles Nelson Reilly...Your mention of him reminds me of Alec Bladwin playing CNR on a Saturday Night Live sketch where he was the guest in "Inside the Actor's Studio." Hilarious!

I realize I'm late reading this blog entry, but as to your comments about Richard Dawson seeming drunk: As I understand it from various documentaries, "Match Game" would (like many game shows) tape a week's worth of episodes in a day. Alcohol would be available during lunch, and the participants all say that the shows taped in the afternoon were definitely .... looser than the ones taped in the morning. (I've heard the same thing about "Hollywood Squares.")

That makes total sense! I heard about the Match Game documentary, which I really want to see - even though I heard that they do not interview Charles Nelson Reilly. Actually, their taping a week's worth of shows in one day also explains why Richard Dawson was wearing the same outfit in a couple episodes in a row this week.

I used to be all into Charles Nelson Reilly, but I think I'm starting to like Richard Dawson better the more I watch the show.
