Did anyone watch the Oscars last night?

I made my husband watch. I enjoyed it, though towards the end it seemed to drag on forever...I was happy that Marion Cotillard won for "La Vie en Rose," which admittedly I haven't seen yet, but I'm really excited about (I love Edith Piaf). I was hoping that MarJane Satrapi would win for "Persepholis," but I think that Ratatoullie is a hard one to beat.

Yeah, so I mostly watched for the outfits. I've been refreshing this web site all day to see what outfits they've been making fun of. Mostly I agree with them, but sometimes I don't like with Jennifer Hudson, that dress was not so good.

I watched the opening just to see John Stewart. I loved his joke about "Atonement" showing the sensual side of Yom Kippur. After that I went with watching the third installment of "Pride & Prejudice." I can't resist Collin Firth as Mr. Darcy.

I always enjoy the Academy Awards. They must have been late, because they presented the first award just as we got home from church. I was very disappointed that the top 4 acting awards all went to Europeans. I've always felt that our awards should be for people in the US. Evidently the academy doesn't feel that way at all. I do think they should be given to people in US made movies.

I didnt watch it but I looked on youtube for the musical performance of Glen and Marketa of the song "Falling Slowly" from the movie Once which is an amazing movie but the song is even better. I am so glad they won the Oscar for best song because they deserved it and it proved that big production and musical stars are not needed to make a truly great song.

Betty, I wonder why feel you that way. Daniel Day Lewis, who won best actor for "There Will Be Blood" did star in a "US made movie." It was produced by Paramount Vantage (a division of Paramount) and Miramax, both American companies. The third production partner, Ghoulardi Film Company, I have never heard of, but based on their other projects (Punch Drunk Love, The Anniversary Party, Magnolia, Boogie Nights) I think it's safe to assume they're American, too. Additionally, the entire movie was filmed in the US.

Michael Clayton (best supporting actress winner) was produced by several US production companies and was filmed entirely in the US. No Country for Old Men (best supporting actor winner) was also US-produced and except for a Mexican location for filming, was filmed entirely in the US. La Vie En Rose (best actress winner) is really the only truly foreign film of the group (though it was partly shot in a US location).

And why should it matter where an actor comes from? I tend to think the Oscars are generally a bunch of BS anyway, but there are a lot of movies that, because of their Oscar attention, I wouldn't have heard of otherwise, like documentaries, shorts, animated films, foreign films, etc. I really think you're cutting yourslef off from a lot of good filmmaking by wanting to limit the Oscars to "US made movies."

We enjoyed the awards the other night. Jon Stewart did a good job hosting!

I was so excited that Juno won best screen writing (I think it was). My husband and I love that movie.

jaxspike - I was excited that the "Falling Slowly" couple won, too. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I love the song. I thought it was sweet that Jon Stewart brought her back out after the commercial break to give her acceptance speech.

betty - I honestly don't think it matters where the actor is from so long as the acting they have done deserves the top honors that an oscar connotates. I remember the year that Roberto Benigni won, I was so excited as I thought he was the top actor that year even if his movie was in Italian.

Cubicalgirl - I loved the atonement joke, too. I'm sure you might've guessed this but I loved all the montages and you know that my house was going crazy whenever Shelley Winters or Ernest Borgnine was in one of them.
