Taser Party

Posted Friday, February 29, 2008, at 10:37 AM

When my husband got to work this morning he called me to tell me about something he heard on NPR - the news story was about women in Fairfield, CT, who were holding Taser parties much like the old Tupperware parties. He went on to tell me that these parties are becoming more and more popular and that the Tasers that are being sold to these women are stronger than those being used by the police.

I thought he was joking.

Turns out he wasn't.

I'm all for women knowing self defense and being able to protect themselves - I know that when my husband is out of town, I'm very thankful that I have two dogs (not that they would really do anything other than lick an intruder...), but I don't know how I feel about Taser parties. I wonder if it's like a Tupperware or a Mary Kay party where you feel kind of pressured to buy something because everyone else is buying something? I wonder how many of the women that buy the Tasers actually use them?

Tasers are a weird thing for me. They are supposedly non-lethal, unlike say guns, but I don't know how I feel about bored, rich housewives carrying them around in their Coach bags.

I feel the same as you.

Have you ever been stung by a taser? They hurt!

Back in my college years, some immature jocks got a hold of one, and were going around campus stinging people, me being one of them.

I feel like women do need a way of protecting themselves, but tasers need to be used lightly and kept safe from children and teens.

I certainly will not be hosting a taser party anytime soon! LoL

Come on now, they gotta have something to protect that purse with!

-- Posted by Disgusted on Fri, Feb 29, 2008, at 11:30 AM

What kind of person goes to a Taser party? Really, that just doesn't sound like any fun at all. You're right, sales should definately be regulated.

-- Posted by LauraSFT on Fri, Feb 29, 2008, at 11:43 AM

I'd buy with specific people in mind! Why wait on a intruder? lol

-- Posted by ontheoutside on Fri, Feb 29, 2008, at 11:56 AM

I use it on people that come to my door and can't read the sign, No soliciting.

"excuse me, can I tell you about Jesus?"

"no, but I can show you him."

" omg, don't taze me, bro!"

lmao!

-- Posted by LauraSFT on Fri, Feb 29, 2008, at 12:05 PM

I would rather go to a Glock party.

-- Posted by nathan.evans on Fri, Feb 29, 2008, at 12:05 PM

Taser party? Do they demonstrate these things? Do they serve alcohol at these parties? This sounds like a great idea for YouTube...lol. That's hilarious.

Nathan - I like the Glock party idea. Actually, they should have things like this for people (men and women). A lot of people don't want to go to the gun-shows, so something like this would probably go over fairly well. You wouldn't have to worry about alcohol at that one though since it's illegal to possess a firearm in TN while you're under the influence.

EM - I realized years ago that answering the door wearing only a towel and holding a pistol tends to keep those people from knocking on your door ever again. The JW in Maryland didn't care for that. The police officers that came to my house thought it was a great idea though. I told the police that I offered to let them in and talk to them but, for some reason, they didn't like that idea so much. I guess they didn't really want to talk to me about Jesus that much.

I think it's misleading to think that having a taser in your purse is going to protect you from anything. You've got to be able to get to it in an instant when being attacked, and who would be able to dig a taser out of her purse while struggling with/running from an attacker? What if you don't have your purse with you? You're better off learning how to hit an attacker in a vulnerable spot and how to get away to safety.

I'd much rather go to one of those sex toy parties. Buying a vibrator is money well spent in my book...and those never hurt anyone!

-- Posted by cubicalgirl on Fri, Feb 29, 2008, at 1:20 PM

cubicalgirl, lmao maybe if you carry your vibrator with you in your purse and throw it at an attacker he'd be so suprised you could just run to get away! Hey, it's worth a try!

-- Posted by LauraSFT on Fri, Feb 29, 2008, at 1:28 PM

LauraSFT, what a waste of a good sex toy! I'm pretty confident I could put a hurtin' on anybody stupid enough to mess with me without having to give up a beloved sex toy. :)

-- Posted by cubicalgirl on Fri, Feb 29, 2008, at 2:08 PM

Cubicalgirl: I noticed last weekened that if you can stay up long enuf at nite, you can catch an infomercial on "those things". lol. But a taser party would be very informative and the end result would be something I could live with. The only problem being you have to be close to the perp to do it.

-- Posted by countrymom on Fri, Feb 29, 2008, at 2:27 PM

I think throwing a sex toy at an attacker is pretty funny - I hope they do it on Law & Order...But, I agree with cubicalgirl that learning a few key self defense moves would be better than having to fish a Taser out of my purse - I don't know about you guys, but I can never find anything in my purse (I'm always convinced I don't have my wallet because it takes me so long to find it!).

Actually, countrymom, I would think that the information gleaned from a Taser party could be worthwhile, but I would also wonder if they are also maybe feeding people information just to scare them into buying a Taser.

-- Posted by cfrich on Fri, Feb 29, 2008, at 2:46 PM

My wife carries a snub nosed .38 revolver. A dead sex offender cant sue, a tazed one can.

-- Posted by seedsower on Fri, Feb 29, 2008, at 5:09 PM

LMAO!!! The sex toy comment is FUNNY!

Seedsower, I totally agree that a dead sex offender is better than one that can sue you! LoL

-- Posted by Mary on Fri, Feb 29, 2008, at 5:38 PM

Tasers have supposedly been know to cause serious, permanent damage to vital organs. Someone who has researched them, enlighten us. I would hate to be tased by some lunatic who was angered by a minor transgression of etiquette.

-- Posted by dmcg on Fri, Feb 29, 2008, at 7:15 PM

I would not go to a taser party. Neither would I even buy a taser. However, it's pretty ironic that this comes up now. Just this past Tues. night we were sitting at the basketball game (SCHS & Siegel boys) when we became surrounded by the opponents fans, family, whatever. They were loud, crowding, and very demonstrative. I said to my friend, "I wish I had a taser gun." I know & she knew that I was teasing, because I would never use one. At least I don't think I would.

-- Posted by bettyhbrown on Fri, Feb 29, 2008, at 9:43 PM

I think the purpose of having something for self defense....taser or gun..... is having it where you can get to it. It would be stupid for anyone to 'not' put it where they could reach it easily. I like Nathan's idea of the Glock party, because that, I would attend......or a Sig Sauer party.....which is what I carry since I have a permit.

The sex toy idea, it won't be long and you won't have to go far for that. Because I heard, off the record, that Wal-mart is about to start selling those kinds of items. I think that would be way too risky for them and I'd most certainly not want to go in their establishment again. I have always thought of Wal-mart as a family store and if they sold that.....it wouldn't be any longer.

-- Posted by jkelley on Sat, Mar 1, 2008, at 7:27 AM

I'm with Nathan & Thom on this one. I'll attend the Glock party and teach my Significant Other how to use it...too late, she already knows and has no qualms about using, should it need to be.

jkelley,

Wal-Mart already sells a vibrator c**k ring! Are you suprised?

I was when I saw it next to the condoms! Walgreens sells it, too!

If I remember right, it is in a pink box and is a high theft item. I think Kroger keeps theirs in a locked case.

-- Posted by Mary on Sat, Mar 1, 2008, at 10:11 AM

Mary.......you mean to tell me that Kroger does too?! I am shocked and surprised! I think it's ashame that they feel the need to carry such things. I guess that only tells you where our country is headed. I think it's disgusting! I had much rather think they had tasers and guns for sale.

-- Posted by jkelley on Sat, Mar 1, 2008, at 12:30 PM

I'll look when I'm at Kroger tonight, and repost when I get home. I'm not 100% positive they sell it, but am pretty sure.

-- Posted by Mary on Sat, Mar 1, 2008, at 1:08 PM

One thing all of us, men and women alike, should remember. The person or person who may attack you are consciousless and/or desperate. If you carry a self-defense weapon of any type...be prepared to use it.

-- Posted by bomelson on Sat, Mar 1, 2008, at 2:29 PM

Bo, you make a good point - I wonder how many of the people who carry a self-defense weapon are when it comes down to it, afraid to use it? I don't know if I could use one against an attacker trying to say take my purse, but I guess on the other hand if someone tried to harm my dog (or child, if I had one), I would not hesitate to use my self defense weapon - if that makes sense.

-- Posted by cfrich on Sat, Mar 1, 2008, at 3:32 PM

My luck I would tase myself before I could get it out of my purse. You should understand it's a mess in mine. I do however like the comment on the vibrator. Too funny! And ladies I personally don't understand about not shopping at wal-mart if they sale vibrators. It's not the middle ages anymore, Women should enjoy sex too. Do I want my small children seeing this stuff? No! But I keep my kids with me when I go out. I do not let them just run around everywhere.

Actually, sex toy parties have been around for years and I've been to a few. They're lots of fun!

and

I don't see the problem with adults being able to readily buy sexual aids. I'm more afraid of people being able to readily buy guns. Maybe if people got some good lovin'on the regular they wouldn't need the guns...

-- Posted by cubicalgirl on Sun, Mar 2, 2008, at 8:28 PM

Tasers shoot wires with electrodes attached up to 30 fwwt, which penetrate the skin and attack the nervous system.stun guns came out 20 tears ago.which have the same effect, without the 30 foot leads!both weapons shoot only voltage, which will not kill you.AMPERAGE is what kills you!know your facts before you start complaining

-- Posted by shrtckt2003 on Sun, Mar 2, 2008, at 11:23 PM

Ok, I was wrong, Kroger does not sell "them" things mentioned above, but I know for a fact Wal-Mart, and Walgreens does.

cubicalgirl,

Maybe you came to my Pure Romance party last March? LoL

Love them parties! By the end of the night my face is hurting from smiling and laughing so much! I need to host another party.

I love how the blog moderators have all of a sudden stopped editing comments...

These "family friendly" blogs are only applicable to a select few it seems...

Sorry to spoil the party. But I noticed where a few bloggers had their comments edited in a news story here and they used a word that is beneath the extremity of some of this language here. Though I do not have a problem with the language on this particular blog, the same should apply to all comments. JOHN: don't pick and choose which comments to edit.

THANK YOU nascarfanatic....I was thinking I was the only one to be HIGHLY offended by such trashy talk....I thought for a second there I was blogging on the playboy site...it's pure disgust!!!

That smut need to be deleted...

-- Posted by Disturbia on Mon, Mar 3, 2008, at 10:09 PM

And suddenly no "flag comment" button... HAHAHA.. John, what's the deal?

-- Posted by nascarfanatic on Mon, Mar 3, 2008, at 10:24 PM

I think it's trashy that Wal-Mart and other drug stores carry such items that are meant to be private. I was also very shocked when seeing that "thing" on their shelves.

Most people's nightmares have become reality, weather it be vibrators on the shelves at family friendly stores, or women having taser parties.

I have wrote Wal-Mart about selling that "thing", but I know from six years of employment there, that it will not be taken off the shelf over one phone call or email. It would have to be a situation with high petition.

-- Posted by Mary on Tue, Mar 4, 2008, at 8:35 AM

If you want to take everything that isn't "family friendly" off the shelves at Wal Mart, you'd probably be left with a store half the size of the existing one.

I see nothing wrong with them selling something like that. After all, condoms and female items are near or on the same shelves, and all of those are "meant to be private" as well.

I am just glad they don't sell tasers. That would deserve much reservation than a harmless toy.

-- Posted by darrick_04 on Tue, Mar 4, 2008, at 9:43 PM

Im glad they sell guns.

-- Posted by Double Exposure on Tue, Mar 4, 2008, at 10:44 PM

Right...

From the manufacturer of tasers:

Taser International, maker of the controversial stun guns, has issued a training bulletin that warns repeated blasts of the Taser can "impair breathing and respiration."

For subjects in a state known as excited delirium, repeated or prolonged stuns with the Taser can contribute to "significant and potentially fatal health risks," according to a recent posting on Taser International's Web site.

A Fashionably Safe Taser Party:

My company, Fashionably Safe (www.fashionablysafe.com), hosts taser parties. Fashionably Safe is female-friendly personal safety company that offers fashionable and functional products and services that promote the physical safety and empowerment of women.

Our product line is unique because we offer items that are appealing to and made for women. Most items out there are dark, scary, bulky, cumbersome and masculine. We seek out items that small but powerful; feminine but funcional; and fashionable but safe.

Our parties are not at all like those other "Pressure to Buy" parties. We do not serve alcohol, but we do serve fun foods and colorful (non-alcoholic) refreshment drinks with umbrellas. We do this because it sets the tone for a relaxed and unwound party atmosphere. Afterall, it is a party.

The people who attend (both men and women, but mostly women) mingle, eat and get to know each other before we all settle down in the living area to begin our discussion and information portion of the event.

The topics start out with questions: why are you interested in personal safety (if they were not interested, they would not be there)? Do you now, or have you ever carried a safety or self-defense device? Have you ever been in a situation that made you consider purchasing or carrying a personal safety device (pepper spray, keychain, stun gun, taser, etc.)?

These topics encourage the women (and sometimes men) to address the issues, fears, concerns and questions they have about self-defense and to offer each other support. Once the discussions are underway, my partner and I (my sister) step back and let the party attendees take the lead. The discussions, personal stories, expeiences, and opinions shared are absolutely amazing, and we learn something new everytime.

Next there is presentation. Not a boring or scary statistically presentation, but an exciting, kick-ass, empowering one that informs women of their options for personal safety and self-dense, their right to practice personal safety and self-defense (for them and their children), and the need for it. Funny, but it seems as if it is not until a woman or someone close to her is attacked that she seriously considers taking action to protect herself and loved ones. It's a shame because sometimes if you wait for an attack to occur, it becomes too late to take any action. Anyway (I digress).

After the presentation, the party attendees move over to our demonstration table where they personal handle and examine our products. This is their opportunity to touch, weigh, and disect items that are normally hidden away in the back of some scary pawn shop or gun store. Our items are way too interesting and unique to be hidden away. They are cool and cleverly disguised as lipstick pepper spray, cell phone stun guns, pepper spray workout weights, black mini baseball bats, and Pink fashion tasers. They look like everyday items, but they are serious self-defense measures that, when used properly, could very well save a life.

The object of our products is to give the user an advantage of the element of surprise against attackers. It is not obvious to an attacker that the cellphone in a woman's hand is a stun gun. It also makes it less scary for a woman to carry. Sometimes carrying a scary, dark, heavy pepperspray can brings images of assault to a woman's mind and this is discouraging. Our products aim to remove the scary stigma that most self-defense products have; and to show women just how fashionably and functional these items can be.

Back to the party. Next, anyone interested in firing a Taser has the opportunity to step out on the back patio and take aim at the targets. We often try to have a local law enforcement or taser instructor present. However, because Tasers are actually fairly easy to use, we (my sister and I) will sometimes take the lead and demonstrate its use. Firing the products is a must in our opinion, and it should be for you to. Afterall, if you are considering investing in something that is supposed to offer some potentially life saving support, you should at least know how to use it.

Next, we hold a raffle where we give away free gift baskets filled with safety related items, our products, and gift certificates to our online store- www.fashionablysafe.com.

At no time during the party is anyone asked to buy anything. Our products are sold primarily online so if they want to, they can go online when it is most convenient for them. If not, they don't have to. At the party we have some of our most popular items available for sale, but again, we never offer.

If attemdees ask to buy something directly from us at the party, then we sell it to them, but if not, it goes back in the box until the next party. We are a business and we sell products, but we do not engage in pressure tactics. We believe wholeheartedly in the importance of informing and arming women with knowledge, so while product sales are important, they are not the main focus of our mission.

Finally, the party ends with everyone getting a free Fashionably Safe goodie bag filled with informative information about female personal safety and self-defense, free safety gadgets from our product line, and lots of other surprises as well.

We thank our guests for coming, wave goodbye, and hope that they enjoyed themselves, learned something, made some new friends, and now have the encouragement they need to take control of their personal safety.

The following statements are posted on our website and it sums up what we, our products, and our parties are really all about:

1) Women take care of their children, loved ones, friends, work, households, and much more, but what are they doing to care for their own personal safety?

2)Self-defense or personal safety is not scary, masculine, dark, difficult or passe'. In fact, given the increasing rate of violence against women, personal safety has become empowering, feminine, enlightening, easy and quite fashionable.

3)Women should not only take care of their physical, mental and emotional needs, but they should also take charge of their personal safety. Be a trendsetter. Be fashionable and be safe.

I have watched the cops on TV use those tasers on a woman to get her out of her car. The cop told her to get on the ground and put her arms behind her back. She politely screamed she couldn't so he tased her every few seconds until another cop could get down on her and cuff her. That sure didn't sit well with me. I've seen how they zap people without any consideration as to the health, size or gender of a person. Usually when you see one cop you see more show up to join in and put that ol knee in the back. Why does it take 4 or more cops and a taser to handcuff someone laying on the ground with their hands behind their back? Some people have died from being tased by cops.

I had heart surgery so no doubt a taser blast or two would end my sufering permenantly.

As for vibrators, I'm not scared of those, but I've never had a mad or scared woman come after me with one, Lol!

If you ladies carry them in your purse like you were going to use it at the next red light you come to... why would you not want the big stores to sell them? I would think you would be more worried about yours falling out of your puse on the check out counter as you tried to get your wallet out.

I have nothing against sex toys and if the truth was known neither do our children. I watched real Sex last night and the ladies were using the vibrators on their feet with amazine "O" success.
