Obama gets the nomination - or so it seems

Posted Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at 1:07 PM

I just read on Yahoo, that Obama has 'cinched' the nomination for President. In the article it says that Obama has more delegates and that Clinton was going to bow out of the race at some point tonight, I think. I think that with Clinton out of the race, it will become a very differnet race - the one between McCain and Obama could be pretty tough. I think it will be reminding a lot of people of the Gore/Bush race in 2000.

I prefer evil to ineptitude.

You can REPENT of evil.

(O.K. You can even improve competence.)

I've yet to see many people cured of stupidity.

Hmmmm Maybe not Evil but certainly not for the people. It's all about money, Money for himself. So How is that the change you are seeking?

Here is a great article I am not going to post it here it is way too long but if you find the time read it. Links are provided there to back it all up.. of course I realize there are those who refuse to see any fault in Obama even when it is in black and white (no pun intended)

You have both failed to show me how anything other than POLLS have made Obama "inept" or "evil"... Other than useless rhetoric. And smear propaganda from right wing news media.

If they want to drown out a candidate because of his religious affiliation to a Church of CHRIST (Not a Mosque), then perhaps we should take a look at every candidate throughout history.

My pastor does not speak for me every Sunday, and I have had at least 5 different pastors over the last 20 years, and I have staunchly disagreed with them on numerous occasions, but I couldn't tell you a single thing any of them have said word for word.

Phil Valentine and others claim that if Obama wins somehow we are going to "lose our freedoms... everything we have." One caller asked him, "like what?", His response..... "UHHHH..... UHHH... everything... UHHH... we'll all become Muslim"... I mean seriously, is that the best you got Phil? How pathetic that you dilute people's minds with such garbage.

While Bush and company have served no punishment for their hundreds of war crimes, illegal wire tapping, illegal patriot act, illegal outing of a CIA agent, and operated in total secrecy (which our government is NOT designed to do), we're worried about a one liner from a preacher from years ago, rather than looking at Barack and his own record and his own commitments to this country.

I leave you with this thought...

Dorothy Thompson: "There is nothing to fear except the persistent refusal to find out the truth, the persistent refusal to analyze the causes of happenings."

James F. Bymes: "Too many people are thinking of security instead of opportunity. They seem to be more afraid of life than death."

Pearl S. Buck: "You can judge your age by the amount of pain you feel when you come in contact with a new idea."

Thomas Jefferson: "Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear."

And just for the record nascarfanatic, I was speaking in abstract terms about the lesser of two evils and voting for an independent. I don't necessarily consider any of the candidates evil.

-- Posted by devan on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 11:03 PM

Me too, Devan. I don't consider them evil... I guess I should have said the lesser of the two "inept" candidates.

-- Posted by Mike Molder on Fri, Jun 6, 2008, at 7:09 AM

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday, day one of the General Election, shows Barack Obama attracting 43% of the vote while John McCain earns 41%. When "leaners" are included, Obama retains a two-point edge, 47% to 45%.

Looks like the verdict is not in yet.

And just for the record nascarfanatic, I was speaking in abstract terms about the lesser of two evils and voting for an independent. I don't necessarily consider any of the candidates evil.

Obama has never had a chance at the White House but yet they fail to realize this.

-- Posted by Dianatn on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 2:14 PM

A lot people, including you, didn't think he had a chance against Hillary. So I wouldn't be so sure if I were you.

This is a change election, and Obama is the change candidate. Mccain doesn't stand a chance.

By the way, did anybody see the Mccain speech Tuesday? Gosh, that was awful. Mccain is a terrible public speaker, and that is going to hurt him in this election as well.

I bet this is the kind of EVIL you all are referring to...

"In the Illinois State Senate, this meant working with both Democrats AND Republicans to help working families get ahead by creating programs like the state Earned Income Tax Credit, which in three years provided over $100 million in tax cuts (NOT TAX INCREASES) to families across the state. He also pushed through an expansion of EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION, and after a number of inmates on death row were found INNOCENT, Senator Obama worked with law enforcement officials to require the videotaping of interrogations and confessions in all capital cases. (WOW, seems like the present administration which uses torture and carries it out in secrecy should take a lesson from the transparency Obama seeks)

In the U.S. Senate, he has focused on tackling the challenges of a globalized, 21st century world with fresh thinking and a politics that no longer settles for the lowest common denominator. His first law was passed with REPUBLICAN Tom Coburn (you mean Democrats and Republicans can actually work together, who would have thought that this last 8 years), a measure to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how and where every dime of their tax dollars is spent. (Yet again, TRANSPARENT government which can't hide a thing) He has also been the lead voice in championing ethics reform that would root out Jack Abramoff-style corruption in Congress. (Oh really, but that must be EVIL)

As a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Senator Obama has fought to help Illinois VETERANS get the disability pay they were promised, while working to prepare the VA for the return of the thousands of veterans who will need care after Iraq and Afghanistan. Recognizing the terrorist threat posed by weapons of mass destruction, he traveled to Russia with Republican Dick Lugar to begin a new generation of NON-PROLIFERATION efforts designed to find and secure deadly weapons around the world. And knowing the threat we face to our economy and our security from America's addiction to oil, he's working to bring auto companies, unions, farmers, businesses and politicians of both parties together to promote the greater use of alternative fuels and higher fuel standards in our cars."

Oh so evil... Yeah, apparently you've all been sound asleep since the turn of the century...

If Spongebob had Sandy Cheeks running the explorations of the sea and space and promoting Title 9,had Squidward Tentacles handling the N E A and had Patrick Star (with brain coral) advising him on about everything else,I'd vote for him.

(Just don't put Eugene Krabs or Sheldon Plankton in charge of the F D A or anything to do with finances or ethics.)

We could wind up with a country as clean and well-run as that gated community Squidward tried out-only without the Stepford-esque monotony.

We'd have to have an alternative White House in Bikini Bottom but if we could get sea monsters Sigmund and Cecil as advisors, hire the folk from SeaLab and sign treaties with Namor and Queen Mera,we might get mineral rights,de-salinization projects and floating cities to help our budget and our ecology.

(It's not as if we haven't had beltway folk crawl out from under a rock before.)

The real people you need to Thank for putting another Republican in the White House are the Obama supporters. Obama has never had a chance at the White House but yet they fail to realize this.

And if Sponge Bob Square Pants was on the ballot I too would pick him.

-- Posted by Dianatn on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 2:08 PM

I am voting for a Democrat this year, no matter who won the nomination, even if it was Sponge Bob Square Pants!!

-- Posted by AFlynn on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 2:06 PM

I'm not disagreeing with you, jax. Matter of fact, like Devan, I usually agree with you both. Perhaps "throwing your vote away" wasn't proper wording. If I had said your vote will have no bearing on the outcome of this election, would that of sounded better to you? I can't stand either of the candidates either, but I know an independent has zero chance. I'm one of the Ross Perot voters left over from the 92 election, but I knew then as I know now he had no more chance of winning than any independent does. Sure in an ideal world, your line of thinking would make sense, but in today's world you have party line voters who will vote for their particular party no matter who their candidate is. You could put Homer Simpson on the ticket for either side and certain people would still vote for him.

Example: both of the past two presidents. Neither deserving, but regardless of that they both won.

You can say this person or that person is the reason an independent will not win, but in actuality the party line voters are the real problem.

-- Posted by Mike Molder on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 2:02 PM

Also, let me thank you Nascarfanatic for it is people like you who settle for less that cause us to be in a situation where we are stuck with less than mediocre candidates.

-- Posted by jaxspike on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 1:48 PM

If I vote for a candidate that is on the ballot, then I am not throwing my vote away. I am voting for whom I think best represents my values and interests. Does that mean if you vote for Obama or McCain and he loses, then you have thrown away your vote also? I have voted for the lesser of two evils the past two elections and yet they have not won and so I refuse to do the same this time around. I will vote for someone who I feel is worthy of the job and if I can not find such an individual from the independents then I will just write my name and be done with it. How dare someone tell me that I am wasting my vote because I don't vote for their candidate or vote for someone because they have a chance at winning. That ideology is stupid and ignorant and that is why we are stuck with just two parties and a lack of good candidates.

I despise both McCain and Obama and I think they have no real clue in how to fix the problems of America and think they don't deserve my vote. So, I am not going to waste my vote just to please the masses.

-- Posted by jaxspike on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 1:37 PM

I guess we all just have to vote this year and hope we are doing the right thing, don't we?

When we are given nothing but evils to vote for how else does one vote except for the lesser evil?

-- Posted by Dianatn on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 12:28 PM

I don't know...

If a self-described Muslim is the type who responds to the world in a destructive manner,he has my sympathies just as much as a hate-warped,deluded person of any ideology.

On the other hand,a follower of Islam who asks Abraham's God to direct his steps in love, wisdom and righteousness should also have us standing between him and prejudice and the ire of a mob mentality.

If a person is going to be fit to lead this country or be an effective force in world affairs,he or she has to be prepared to do the right thing whether it is the popular thing or the easy thing or not.

(I'd have more respect for someone who stood up for the Jews in the 1930's than those who waited until 1948.)

We have to stand for certain principles-even if it means applying them to people who can offer us nothing or people whose conduct is repellent.

Sometimes,we must even support our own people and those worthy of our compassion and respect.

Before we judge those who declare who has their sympathies and who does not,we need to ask whether their support and endorsement comes from conviction or expediency.

-- Posted by quantumcat on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 12:13 PM

Bottom line, you have to vote your conscious just like everyone else. Personally I want to lie down at night in December and say I know I did all I could to keep a Muslim sympathizer out of the White House.

-- Posted by Mike Molder on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 11:44 AM

Well my thought is when you keep voting for the lesser of two evils, eventually the lesser becomes the greater. The spiral is upward not downward.

-- Posted by devan on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 11:35 AM

So, what you are saying is vote against something instead of for something, or vote your politics instead of your conscience. That is the reason that independents never make any progress. People are afraid to take a stand for what they really believe in. Your vote is not wasted just because your candidate doesn't win. It is wasted when you vote for the lesser of two evils.

-- Posted by devan on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 10:01 AM

I'm sure based on that last sentence this post was also aimed at me. I'll have to respectfully disagree with you, Devan (and that is rare.) If you are voting for a candidate who has zero chance at winning you ARE throwing your vote away. I define throwing your vote away as any vote that doesn't directly effect the outcome. Since you are not voting for either of the possible winners, you are doing just that. Apparently, Nascarfanatic (or Darrick, seem to be of the same) has perceived Jax as a disgruntled Democrat like himself, so his vote not being cast as a vote for Obama is the same as voting against Obama in his opinion. I freely admit that I am only voting against the lesser of two evils and if more don't do the same you'll get a taste of this thinking:

From Barack's book, Audacity of Hope:

"I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly

direction."

-- Posted by Mike Molder on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 10:16 AM

And Jaxspike, your vote for an independent will end up just like it did in 2000, with yet another Republican in the White House. So I want to thank you now for 4 more years of a pathetic excuse for America.

-- Posted by nascarfanatic on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 8:17 AM

Bill Clinton united the congress??? What a load of crap! That was a Republican Congress which tried to have the idiot impeached! He was eventually acquitted by a very small majority from the senate. Please don't glorify this moron by saying he had anything to do with the successful economy of the 90's. He was too busy having extra marital affairs to concentrate of correcting the economy, let alone uniting a Congress..Geez

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impeachment_of_Bill_Clinton

Still amazes me how some of you people want to credit the president instead of congress during the good times, but when times are bad you will blame the president instead of your democratic congress. Granted, Bush has long worn out his welcome in my eyes as well, but to glorify Clinton instead of giving credit to the people who deserve it (congress) is a joke.

What did Bill Clinton do in the 1990's Jaxspike? He UNITED the Congress and caused them to work toward common ground. Just because you haven't seen anything like this in the last 8 years, doesn't mean it can't happen again. So therefore YOU are disillusioned...

-- Posted by nascarfanatic on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 8:14 AM

Just because I will not vote for Obama does not mean I will vote for McCain, because I won't. I am going to vote for someone running as an independent that is worth of my vote and shares my ideas.

If you think Obama will fix the problems in our country, then you are just as disillusioned as the McCain supporters.

OMG Jkelly, I think it's PERFECTLY ok to not put your hand over your heart when the Pledge of Allegiance is being said. I mean just VENTURE OUT A LITTLE to a sports arena here in Bedford Country. When many teams line up they place their hands behind their backs rather than across their hearts. There is no right or wrong way to say or enact the Pledge of Allegiance. I find it highly pathetic none of you see the conditions we are currently in? All time high foreclosure rate, all time high gasoline, corporations who INFLATE the prices of goods so they can return unprecedented profits, a war that was based on LIES, an administration that does everything in secrecy, No Child Left Behind, highest welfare rolls in two decades (lowest ever under Clinton), largest national debt in history, largest budget deficits in history, lowest value of the dollar in recent memory, inflation reaching record levels, extinction of the middle class, tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans, bridges to nowhere, natural disasters striking this country every other month and New Orleans is NOWHERE near as important as Iraq, the wealthiest executive cabinet in history, convicted criminals who were pardoned by our president, corporations which played with their books the inflate profits thus going bankrupt and innocent people losing EVERYTHING (all with nobody to hold them accountable), war profiteering, 4000 dead American soldiers ... for what?, a Constitution that means nothing to this president, real wages aren't going up with price increases, and millions of CHILDREN can't get healthcare yet inmates at Guantanamo Bay and prisoners all throughout this "great country" receive free healthcare EVERYDAY...

AND ALL YOU GOT ON OBAMA is the Pledge of Allegiance, a Flag lapel, a preacher who was disgusted with this administration (everyone reflect on the last 20 years of attending the same church and lets see if we remember EVERYTHING the preacher ever said, PUH-LEASE!!!!!!!!!)

John McCain couldn't even read a teleprompter in his speech last night, oh but he can sure visit Iraq and brag about that... Try this McCain, VISIT CITIES IN THIS COUNTRY and try LISTENING TO THESE PEOPLE IN THE U.S.A., instead of only listening to "generals on the ground" (who were replaced due to Bush not wanting to LISTEN to the first generals on the ground... what a messed up contradiction).

You people need to get a grip. If you didn't spend so much time worried about a pastor, ONE photo of Obama not "holding his hand over his heart" (boo hoo) and realize this astronomical mess we're in, the haze over your eyes wouldn't gently lift away. Bush and his people are great marketers, and thus fear has brainwashed you all.

Interesting and well thought out information, not sure I agree with it though. I would have to say that he is right when he says no one knows who the antichrist is, basically because many will be decieved by him.

It won't matter to most who have already made up their mind. I'm not voting "for McCain", I'm voting against Obama....I think that will be the case for many. Terrible decision we will be forced to make. Like I said earlier it is the lesser of the two evils and neither is worthy.

-- Posted by Mike Molder on Wed, Jun 4, 2008, at 5:19 PM

Who do you think Obama will choose as his running mate? Do you think it will matter to those who refuse to vote for him?

You mean there isn't 57 States? ;^)

-- Posted by Mike Molder on Wed, Jun 4, 2008, at 1:12 PM

I can't believe anyone would consider voting for someone who would not even look at the American flag and refused to put his hand over his heart. He did not even know how many states were in the US.......am I missing something here?! I think voting for Obama is voting for a "change" that we cannot comprehend. But it will be all too clear this time next year when he's in office. We need to think about his roots and open our eyes......Bush was nothing compared to what he has in store for us......

I thought that the someone worse than the Anti-Christ was Bush?

I could even handle the Anti-Christ holding office.

We'd know who was backing him, what he was planning and that he would be thoroughly trounced by the good guys.

I worry that we might choose someone worse so that the Anti-Christ,when he arrives, looks like an improvement.

Jesuslovesevery1 . . . I truly hope he does prove me wrong. I really do . . . but I just dont see it from where I am standing and feel like he hasn't expressed his true agenda(or any agenda for that matter).

But yeah, I will be the most excited person on earth if he proves me wrong and becomes a great president.

Any really, how can anyone call someone the Anti-Christ? Very unchristian-like mentality!

-- Posted by jaxspike on Wed, Jun 4, 2008, at 7:40 AM

Hillary is our only hope of escaping this bigot. The longer the party stays divided the better the chances are of some of their party line voters jumping ship. I'm not a McCain supporter, but I'll be forced to vote for the lesser of the two evils in this election and pray we are given better choices in 2012.

-- Posted by Mike Molder on Wed, Jun 4, 2008, at 6:56 AM

Good point Rebel. It isn't that he didn't hear him; it is that when EVERYONE else heard his pastor he was forced to distance himself from the controversy. He shares the same beliefs or else he would have left the congregation many years ago. Only a very naive person would think otherwise.

-- Posted by Mike Molder on Wed, Jun 4, 2008, at 6:53 AM

Well I do not know who to vote for...This is a 1st for me....So I am counting on all you guys to say what you think is good on either side and what is bad....Maybe by reading what everyone has to say from now until the day comes when I will have to go vote...I will know which way to go...I just feel deep in my soul that we relly do not have anyone good to vote for...I wonder if my vote will really count or maybe I should say be counted...I keep thinking about what Obama said about his preacher...that in the 20 years of going to his chruch he never heard him say anything wrong...So if he went there for 20 years and did not hear him..Then why should he hear anything we have to say ....

-- Posted by rebelrose on Tue, Jun 3, 2008, at 11:49 PM

Ain't that the truth!

From CNN "17,000 people inside the hall (in Minnesota) and 15,000 people outside the hall..." Listening to his speech. Who else could even DREAM of such a turnout?

Hillary's speech was quite defiant, with no concession (no surprise).. yet she did continually mention her lead in the popular vote, and how she needs a few days to decide her options at this point...

In other news, did anyone see McCain's pathetic speech in Louisiana? WOW. Maybe 100 people, he couldn't even read the teleprompter accurately. Poor thing. This man is so out of touch with the REAL America, because just like he and others his only focus is Iraq. If only he cared as much about this country as he did about Iraq.

-- Posted by nascarfanatic on Tue, Jun 3, 2008, at 9:48 PM

Another AMAZING speech...

He told John McCain Maybe if you spend some time in the cities across America instead of Iraq, you'd understand we have a broken economy, a broken healthcare system, and you'd know we have problems here that you seem to forget when you go to Iraq.

He also said he respected "John McCain's accomplishments even though he chooses to deny mine..."

LOVE IT.

All this from people who are obviously ignorant to the last 8 years...

Michael, the Anti-Christ was adequately represented in the last administration!!!!

Jaxspike,

Just wait until Obama proves you wrong. Can't wait... B/c then it will seem all you and others have against him, is HOT AIR.

-- Posted by michaelbell on Tue, Jun 3, 2008, at 8:21 PM

No, Obama is far worse than Al Gore or John Kerry. At least those two understood how government works and had an actual platform(bad or good) and not just eloquent speeches and hot air.

-- Posted by jaxspike on Tue, Jun 3, 2008, at 7:18 PM

Your numbers are flawed since the Republican primaries ended months before the Democratic primaries did plus someone like Obama will motivate conservative voters to the polls since he is considered ultra liberal. Plus, many Republicans voted in the Democratic primaries because it is allowed(like in Tennessee) so the numbers are flawed in that regard too. Plus, there are people like me who would have voted for Clinton but refuse to vote for Obama so they will either vote for McCain, stay home, or vote for an independent(like me).

So using those primary numbers are just as accurate as asking a monkey to pick who will win.

-- Posted by jaxspike on Tue, Jun 3, 2008, at 7:17 PM

I thought 2000 and 2004 was pretty pathetic myself...

-- Posted by darrick_04 on Tue, Jun 3, 2008, at 7:15 PM

Worse choice of presidential candidates in my lifetime... This country is in a terrible mess whoever gets the nomination. Of all the years for the Democrats to present such a sorry excuse for a candidate, it would be a year when they are almost gauranteed the presidency..

-- Posted by Mike Molder on Tue, Jun 3, 2008, at 7:05 PM

Yeah, they do need to team up.... They'd be unbeatable and the Republicans should just stay home.

-- Posted by nascarfanatic on Tue, Jun 3, 2008, at 3:55 PM

McCain stand no chance my friend. Look at the pure vote totals alone thus far.... And Hillary just announced that she's open to the VP spot if it helps the Dem's. With 36,000,000 votes between Hillary and Obama and just under 10,000,000 total for McCain I would say those two together stand a great chance...

And yes we're beyond ready for change. The word Conservative itself means to keep things the way they are... which at some point always becomes outdated...

-- Posted by darrick_04 on Tue, Jun 3, 2008, at 3:21 PM

I am afraid it will be McCain . . . Obama is just too polarizing and Americans arent know for being that smart when it comes to choosing candidates. We all say we want change but then change our minds when the time to vote comes at hand.

The question is are we ready for the kind of change that Obama wants to lead.

-- Posted by jaxspike on Tue, Jun 3, 2008, at 2:21 PM

We'll see...
