Last summer our pond had a really pretty lotus flower for about a day and a half. It came out in July. I thought I had missed it this year because the time when it came out last year, is when I was on my trip this summer. But, no, turns out I didn't miss it - the lotus came out this weekend!

I took a bunch of pictures. I almost fell right into the pond trying to take this one - I kept thinking of how gross it would've been if I had indeed fallen into the pond, very gross. Ugh!

So, yeah, it was there this morning still, but I think it's about to go back into retirement soon. Until next year, I guess.

Hey, what's wrong with walking in the pond with squishy stuff going through your toes and maybe some fish nibbling at your leg to see if you are edible?

This spring I had our snapping turtle walking on top of my foot at the same time.

Nice picture.

I told a friend that if I had fallen into the pond, I would've wanted to shower with bleach to get all the gunk off me!

That said, maybe I should just clean out the pond.

It's a beautiful bloom & a very nice photograph. I'm glad you didn't fall into the pond.

Chantal,

From what I can tell, your lotus is actually a water lily. There are profound differences between the two. Lotus blooms are held high above the water on long stalks, as are the leaves. The lotus leaf is a cup or bowl shape. Water lilies have much more limber stems and so they float on the water's surface. The blooms as well are usually very close to the surface.

Check out waterplants.com you will be able to discern the true identity of your magnificent plant.

dmcg -

I'm sure that you're right and it is not actually a lotus - I really only call it that because that's what a friend of mine called it and I believed her...I'm going to check out the website you recommended and find out exactly what kind of flower it is - but I agree it's probably a water lily.

I checked out that site. You were right, it's a lily. Here's a link I found the a picture that looks most like it - http://www.pondkoi.com/plant_pop/HLS-028...

I doubt I would be able to discern a lily from a rose, but that is a beautiful flower, and a good picture.
