It's not hard to watch where you are going, nor is it hard to tie up your dog!

Okay, so, I live on Warner Bridge Rd and there are always a bunch of loose and/stray dogs running around. There's one particular pair of dogs that I see literally every day, one of white the other is black - they're super cute together.
Yesterday on my way home from work my husband and I saw that the white dog had been hit. It was pretty sad. The sad part wasn't so much that the dog had been hit, but that the white dog's buddy (the black dog) was sitting next to the body of the white dog. I literally broke my heart. I don't know if these two are strays or if they belong to an owner who doesn't have the time to tie them up regardless of the consequences (i.e. the dog getting hit by a car). So, this morning the white dog was still on someone's front lawn. It was sad but not as sad as when the black dog was there. However, my heart broke all over again when I saw that the black dog had returned to sit with his friend. Anyway, my point here is that it's really not that hard to watch where you are going while driving. And if you have dogs, it's really not that hard to make sure that they are either tied up or in a confined area when they are outside. Really, I have dogs and I can make sure that they are always safe when I let them out - it really isn't hard. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

Some dogs are escape artists but all pets need to be appropriately confined as much as possible just as they need a form of identification that can't be removed.
If they are found loose with a permanent i.d.,their families can be notified before they are euthanized,re-homed or come to a bad end while living on the streets.
If necessary, the i.d. could enable people to get the pet's medical records from their vet.
(It might help to know if an animal was already neutered, was up-to-date on shots or had problems like diabetes, kidney dysfunction, vision or hearing loss or epilepsy.)
The owners of these two dogs may never know what happened to their canine friends who left home without tags, tattoos or microchips.
That is so, so sad. It breaks my heart too. I hope someone takes the black one in. It's way too cold for him outside.
Even in the animal world there are true friendships. It is heartbreaking to know the duo will not get the chance to continue that friendship. But I wonder did you call anyone to report the hurt dog. Some help may have been provided, even if it was to put the dog down. The black dog would also have been taken care of. Sometimes we need to act and not just stand back & feel sorry for the situation.
greeneyes - by the time my husband and I saw the white dog, it was well beyond injured.
We stopped our car and tried to get the black dog to come to us, but he ran away. I'm hesistant to call animal control as I would not want the black dog to get picked up and immediately euthenized (you know like if it really is a stray and is unable to quickly adapt to people).
I'm glad to hear you made an effort to get to the black dog. Forgive me for thinking negative of your response.
There is a house on Coney Island Road that I drive by everyday on my way to work that has 3 dogs chained outside. The owners apparently have taken a plastic dog house that comes apart in the middle and seperated the 2 peices giving a half to 2 of the dogs. So basically one dog has a roof to crawl under and lay on the frozen ground and the other dog has the bottom half that has been turned upside down so he can crawl under it and lay on the frozen ground. The 3rd dog has no shelter that I could see. I stopped on the street yesterday and knocked on the door to see of the owners would be willing to give away the dogs so maybe I could keep one and give the other 2 away to a more caring family. Nobody ever came to the door even though there were 5 cars/trucks and 3 motorcycles parked in the driveway and in the yard. One of the dogs had its chain tangled in the railing of the porch and couldnt move. I saw no food or water for any of the dogs and with the below zero temperatures I honestly cant see why people would treat their pets this way.
Americanwoman - That is completely appalling, which is probably why they didn't answer the door...Isn't this something that our local animal control or humane society can investigate?
saddly to say i see more and more animals not just dogs turned out to fend for themselves as more and more people loose thier jobs and dont want thier pet at risk of being put to sleep but it is more kind to have them put to sleep rather then suffer with the elements they would face being left on thier own ..cars are just one of the dangers they face, i am glad you tried to catch the one..the county pound has safe traps also for catching strays at least then they have safty and a peaceful way out of the world and not one filled with pain and suffering
we used to have a "neighborhood" cat on our street. We got his vaccinations up to date, fed him, and neutered him.. he was a sweetheart. Very talkitive... kids loved him.
My neighbor poisoned him on easter, two years ago. We still miss him.... she has also gotten "rid" of other animals too becasue she does not want them "pooping in her mulch".
I really miss that cat.
I would'nt miss the neighbor....... at all.
4fabfelines - your neighbor sounds terrible (and os probably similar to my neighbors, but really I don't know my neighbors, so I can't say for certain). I guess I just don't understand why killing the animal is better than calling a shelter.
she calls the pound and and the law every time she sees a animal out. I got a 150.00 ticket for my cat in MY YARD> while i was in the yard with him. He was supervised... They gave me the ticket becasue she has them on speed dial.
She also Gripes about the kids playing ball in the street.,... calls the law on them too...
oh well.
She keeps my prayer life in a good workout. ......
I had a dog and loved her very much and kept her in a fence and treated her just like my child. Every time I see dogs and cats roaming at large it makes me mad because if I obey the laws I think everybody should also. Also we have stray, wild cats and kittens roaming around our house. They poop in our driveway and my husband and I step in it and then take it in the car or house on our shoes and it makes us so mad. They will also poop right beside the passenger side of my car so when I walk around to get in I will step in it there also. It makes me angry. The humane society will not accept any more cats and these cats keep multiplying. Some of them will just dissapear, but some don't and the others just keep having more babies. What are we to do?
