fish pond question
Posted Monday, March 2, 2009, at 5:41 PM<< Previous | Read comments | Respond | Email link | Next >>
We have a fish pond at our house. We didn't build it, but we do our best at keeping the fish alive. My question is this - I think the pond has a slow leak. Is there an easy way to fix this or is it something that's overly complicated? I know that the problem can't be diagnosed by my telling you about it, but it seems like there's a slow leak on one of the sides. Very slow, as there's barely any water coming out - it's just noticable.

Is it Concrete or Plastic Liner?
If it is very slow, are you sure there is a leak or a combination of evaporation and wild animals drinking?
The reason I ask is because I thought I was chasing a leak for years. Never could find it and then noticed deer coming up at 3-4 am, some raccoons, our dogs cats, etc.
Dianatn - the liner is some sort of plastic or rubber, and around it is a concrete barrier.
Steve - I'm just guessing it's a leak because I never noticed it before. It's in kind of a weird spot for an animal to be drinking from - it's on the side of a slight hill with a shrub and steps next to it. Maybe a raccoon could drink from there, but not a deer.

Then I am assuming the plastic liner is what is leaking.
I am not sure there is an easy answer for you:
But whatever you do you are going to have to take your fish out and put them in something else because you are going to have to drain it to fix it.
When you find a tub to put your fish in ...drain the water into the tub from the pond so it won't be to much of a shock for them.
If you can't see where the leak is after you get the fish out you may have to use some food coloring in the water so you can see where the grass around it turns colors. I would be afraid to use that with your fish in there though. after you find the leak...which may be in the bottom of the liner you can probably patch it with some pool liner patch (Try dynamic design pool and spas on Union Street) ask them about a pool liner patch kit. If it looks like you can get the liner out in one piece without messing up your wall around it you would probably be better off getting a new liner all together.
Of course this is just my opinion and I am no professional by any means but that is where I would start.
I would leave it alone unless it begins to leak alot. It's easier to top it off from time to time than the alternative. If you have a waterfall you could be losing water there! Sometimes if sludge builds up it will cause the water to take a dif. path and go out or splatter out of the pond.
I guess I missed that you had identified a particular spot from which you think it is leaking.
If you think you know where it is, patching might be good, but Disgusted has a good suggestion as well. Searching for that leak might not be worth it. I have drained my pond then searched and searched with no results. At least the pond was cleaned as a result.
Well, I won't deny that the pond needs to be cleaned. I was planning to do that at some point anyway...maybe sooner rather than later (but I will at least wait until it warms up a bit).
I would call Edwards Exteriors, they build ponds and all type stuff like that. They built my pond and it looks and works awesome, 931-684-5762. Bill Edwards owns the company but I think his sons basically do the work so try them.
we have a fish pond which was here when we bought the house. last year at this same time we came home to the fish pond had lost all of its water. we drained it looked for leaks didn't find any. we fill it up in the spring and it has worked great all summer and fall until this morning when at least over half the the water is now gone again. does anybody think its the change in the temparture? it when down to freezing last night for the first time. there is no water around the pond. please let me know where we should be looking for a leak, as its not in the lining. because I shut the pump off and the remaining water is still there and has not gone down.
Chantal,
To stay on topic, I would go with Dsiguted's advice and leave it be rather than tackle searching for a pin-hole leak unless it becomes a real concern for the health and survival of the fish (eventually the leak may need to be addressed because it will likely grow bigger over time, but it would probably be very hard to find at this point).
Now to get off topic, you offered to help if I organize a craft fair to benefit victims of domestic violence...I would love to have your help. I just came home from a 4 day hospital stay and have some life-threatening health issues to address so I will not be able to do anything for several weeks, but I am planning to put it together in time for the holidays--a holiday/Christmas theme craft fair.
If you want to email me at homeschooltrend@aol.com I can send you my cell phone number and we can get together and start planning say the first week of November? We could try to run it say the first week of December so that shoppers can buy homemade ornaments, craft gifts, etc.
Anyway, thanks so much for your offer, and sorry to take this off topic. I wasn't sure how to reach you otherwise.
All my best,
Shawna
