No more wisdom

I started having some tooth pain last week. It was my wisdom teeth. I'd had one removed years ago (on 9/11 actually) and had not given the remain 3 teeth a thought until last week when they decided to make themselves known. I called around for a dentist that would take our insurance and found a place that could take me the next day (yay!).

I went to the dentist (Comfort Care in M'boro) and they were super nice. I had told them that I had not been to the dentist in years and that I was completely terrified of the dentist and that my fear was nothing personal. They took x-rays of all my teeth - and it was kind of neat because it was digital x-rays, so I was able to see them on a monitor as soon as they were taken. Then the dentist came in and said he could not pull my wisdom teeth as they were coming in crooked - but he did do a cleaning and tell me I have cavities (which didn't shock me, although I have to say I'm about to turn 34 and it's the first time I've had them).

I was refered to an oral surgeon, whom I was to see the next morning. Once again, my husband and I woke up early to come to M'boro to see a dentist. At the oral surgeon's office the first thing they did was take a panoramic x-ray of my teeth (which was pretty cool). Then the surgeon took one look at my teeth and said they needed to come out. This was on Wednesday - we made the appointment for my teeth to come out on Friday (so fast!).

For some reason, I was able to sleep on Thursday night without too much trouble. I think I wasn't so nervous about getting the wisdom teeth pulled because when I had gotten my other one pulled it hadn't hurt. I was to soon find out that getting three pulled is a different story. It hurt a lot. It still hurts. I'm going in tomorrow for a follow up visit (I also think I have an infection). I'm sick of liquids, yogurt, jello and pudding! I ate some mashed potatoes and tofu the other night and that was a mistake because it just hurt. I was able to eat scrambled eggs yesterday, so maybe it's getting better.

What are some of your favorite soft(er) foods?

Also, in case you were wondering, and you probably weren't - I went to dentists in M'boro because I had to plan the dentist visits around my husband's teaching schedule - which was much easier to do when the campus and the dentist are in the same town.

man i will be praying for you. I have had my wisdom teeth taken out. They had to be cut out. It was interesting. I was pretty dopey for a while.

But successful! No more teeth bothering me.

be blessed.

Been there, done that also. I went to M'boro also because referred there. I had several friends who ended up with what they called "dry sockets".

It hurt really bad afterwards. I hope you don't have that or an infection though and feel better quick. Its too hot to be hurtin'!

Lesa - Thank you for the prayers, it hurts so bad I think I need them!

mmp84 - I went to the densist this morning and he thought it might be dry socket and then said looked more like the start of an infection. I got some antibiotics and hopefully that will take care of it. And you're right it is way too hot for anything other than hiding out in the air conditioning.

I know that a lot of dentist gave antibiotics before they did any work, or at least they used to, in order to prevent those infections.

Tyger - Funny you mention that, because my mom said the same thing. Maybe they don't give them beforehand because they're hoping to give patients less drugs? As long as it works, I'm happy.

I am not a dentist, but this is what was explained to me when I inquired about the change in antibiotic use in dentist offices.

Years ago the American Heart Association got involved with dentistry, when they discovered that bleeding gums and blood from tooth extractions could aggravate heart disease. They urged dentists to prescribe antibiotics prior to any oral work that could produce bleeding.

This was done for years, until another study claimed that excessive use of antibiotics can create germs that are resisitant to all antibotics. Now dentists only prescribe antibotics prior to cleaning or extractions if you have known heart disease.

Not gospel, just what I was told, but it makes sense though.
