This can't be real

Posted Tuesday, August 4, 2009, at 11:53 AM

A friend of mine posted a link to this article on her Facebook page. I know the website is CNN.com, but really, this can't be real.

What do you guys think?

I'm sorry....I may be too hard, but I think she's an idiot and I think the lawyer who took the case is an ambulance chaser and the judge should kick them ALL out of his courtroom. Go look up Stella Awards on the internet and you will see more of this insanity. My favorite is the woman who bought a Winnebago, put it on cruise control at 70 mph on the freeway and LEFT HER SEAT to go make a sandwich. Of course there was a crash....she sued AND WON over 1 million in a JURY trial. The reason: The Winnebago driver's manual did NOT say not to leave the seat when cruise control was switched on.

All I can say is that the "jury of her peers" was just as stupid as she. Craziness all around.

Losinghope - In the article I posted, it says she's representing herself as she can't afford a lawyer. Personally, I think if she spent half as much time looking for a job as she did coming up with this lawsuit, she'd probably have a pretty decent job.

Exactly...me too! This whole entitlement mentality that is so prevalent these days in the younger people just kills me. I raised my kids to know that if you want something you have to work for it, that nothing in life is free and you are not entitled to have something for nothing. I'm not saying this woman should not be hired somewhere, but in this economy with soooooooooo many EXPERIENCED college graduates out of work, she should be happy to find at job at all, even at McDonald's. My youngest daughter cannot find a job at all because she has no experience and people laid off from other places are getting the jobs.

I am embarrassed though...the case about the Winnebago has been falsely circulated. BUT, there are some really good cases on stellaawards.com I just shake my head at the stupidity.

I agree, this woman is an absolute idiot! If I have a 4.0 GPA and she has a 2.7, you better believe they better promote me more than her. But really though, has she ever thought that maybe the reason she cant find a job is because she isn't a good candidate and doesn't present herself in manner that potential employers will look favorably on? So many people now think that once they graduate college, they automatically deserve their dream job without climbing the ladder to get there. It is a sad state of our society today!

What the college should do is agree to refund her money but then take her degree back from her . . . then she will learn how the real world works.

I'd think that with the internet playing such a big part in people's lives now, that any potential employer would google her name if she applied - and see this insane lawsuit.

It might not hurt for her to use her "downtime" to hone her skills,do some volunteer work-anything to make her more marketable and show how well she can perform necessary tasks, work well with others and generally be a hardworking, responsible, clever and likeable person.

Grades and "who you know" are fine but the best way to get and keep a good job is to SHOW (not tell) how one can be an asset to an employer.

If she can't get experience at an entry level job,she could try upgrading her skill sets and demonstrating traits like honesty, resourcefulness, dependability (along with any particular knacks she might have) working for any of the many non-profits that have so much more to do in these hard times.

The experience and networking opportunities she'd get at the local schools, libraries, nursing homes, food banks, art center, legal aid office, etc. could benefit her far beyond a few good lines on her resume'.

Building a Habitat House, performing mission work, helping with a no-kill shelter or adult learning center, participating in a political campaign or ecological project, aiding a caregiver relief program or doing little theatre, helping with children's sports or joining a service organization could give her a sense of pride and accomplishment to offset the frustrations of going up against a poor hiring market.

She could do worse than looking into the Peace Corps, the National Guard, military service, etc.

(They can even help defray her educational expenses.)

Even if she should get her tuition reimbursed, she'd still need more than money to "pay her dues".

Now,more than ever, even Ivy League valedictorians have to graduate from the "School of Hardknocks".

That doesn't mean she can't succeed but,if ever life came with a money-back guarantee,it doesn't now.

She and others in the same plight can improve their circumstances by doing whatever they can with what's available to them now.

Waiting for the perfect circumstances to appear is futile.

One might have somewhat better results by taking an activist role in manipulating one's fate.

When life hands out lemons...

Open a lemonade stand.

Clean marble,glass,brass,wood and chrome.

(But,don't over do the citric acid.)

Use to freshen and deodorize everything from fireplaces to litter boxes.

Soothe athelete's foot and eczema.

Bleach hair, age spots and stained laundry.

Perk up the color in cooked vegetables.

Keep bugs away from stored clothing.

Add to boiling water before adding eggs to make the shells stay intact but be easy to peel.

All of the above suggestions are about having a "can-do" attitude instead of feeling frustrated and defeated.

"What shall I do? How can I manage?" need not be laments.

They can be the trigger questions that help a person investigate all their options.

It looks as if this young lady is playing the blame game because she's given up and thinks she's exhausted all other possibilities.

What she wins from tenacity and ingenuity will serve her far better than anything she might be granted by a court of law.

My daughter just graduated also. She was working full time anyway although not in the area of her degree. She told us that when standing in line for graduation, there were many who were worried about finding a job. She didn't say anything about them planning to sue if they couldn't get one.

quantumcat - you'd think that someone would've told this woman that sueing her school for not finding her a job is ridiculous, but maybe she just isn't listening. "It looks as if this young lady is playing the blame game because she's given up and thinks she's exhausted all other possibilities." <-- I think you're exactly right.

Also, a bit off topic, did I see you at the Walmart last night? I thought it was you, but wasn't sure.

Tinarb - I've never heard of anyone doing this before. It's so crazy, that I'm convinced it has to be fake.

That was me!

I thought I glimpsed you but wasn't sure.

Will you be coming to the garden club?

It's always great to see you.

-- Posted by quantumcat on Wed, Aug 5, 2009, at 1:51 PM

I'm thinking about going, but Jer and I are so embarassed about our lack of gardening skills...basil is the only thing we were able to grow.

Thank you, then for the compliment as you made my day. You should've said it was you.

Instead of suing, maybe begging for work study and graduate classes would have been a better approach.

I would however like to see if the office in question ever did anything at all to work with her, or assist her in any way before I could judge though. If she is claiming that, for whatever reason, she was not provided with the services she was promised on the front end, maybe she should sue. I do not know about this particular instance, but I have experienced recruiters, and also experienced the bureaucracy in some schools. It could be that the office is actually doing very little, but was talked up to a perspective student within an effective sales pitch and she made the mistake of believing it.

oh please.. I am qualified for all kinds of things but times are hard and life stinks so she just needs to get a gripe and be a big girl.

I scrub toilets and fix computers for a living.

She needs a little humble pie reality or dumpster diving..

No college- make a fine living, you know why? Drive and work ethic.

I am SO sick of this world owes me attitude. That's not what America is about- but it will ruin us that's for sure.
