touristy times

Posted Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at 3:24 PM

Last week my cousin Julie was visiting from Montreal. Since she was here, I did quite a few touristy things that I normally wouldn't have done - like the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, but it was really fun. We had a great time with her and one of my dogs seems like she's going through depression without Julie to cuddle anymore. Anyway, I thought I would share some of the pictures I took at various places.

at the farmer's market

These were at the Nashville Farmer's Market. They're called "Peanut Pumpkins" and Julie and I agreed that they looked really weird.

gold records

Wall o'gold records at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

Porter Wagoner's suit

This was one of Porter Wagoner's suits that were on display. The embroidery is amazing.

hee haw

Some things from the Hee Haw set.

pan for gems

This was taken at Cumberland Caverns. I didn't go on the tour of the caves because I wore sandals, without thinking, and wasn't allowed in. It was okay though, because after the tour when I heard about all the spiders...it's better I didn't go.

Chantal & Julie at the Parthenon

Here we are at the Parthenon. I still haven't been in because this is the second time I've gone and it's been closed.

Parthenon

Another shot of the Parthenon.

jellyfish

We also went to the aquarium in Chattanooga. I love the new jellyfish exhibit!

Julie and her new boyfriend

Lastly, Julie was charmed by a true southern gentleman. This is who we've been calling her new boyfriend.

Cumberland Caverns is so much fun and the views are just amazing. You definitely need to go back and take the tour. The best thing to do though is take a group and do the overnight tour where you sleep in the cave and eat . . . that is a great experience and can be such a blast with the right group of people.

I love the Parthenon but every time we go it seems someone is using it as a photo op for a wedding . . .

Have you been to aquarium in Chattanooga yet? Chattanooga is a great city to spend a day in also.

@Shawna - Thanks. I tend to think it's impossible to take a bad shot of jellyfish...

@Lesa - Thanks!

@Bernardcraig20 - thanks!

@jaxspike - If I had a near panic attack when a cricket jumped on me in my own house, I doubt I could spend the night in a cave. I did hear, though, that Cumberland Caverns has shows sometimes, that I would probably like - if I didn't see any spiders or crickets.

Funny, about your Parthenon experience - there was someone there getting a wedding photo done. We just walked around her.

The jellyfish shot is from the Chattanooga Aquarium. I've only been there and the art museum in Chattanooga, but I want to see more of the city as I think it's really hip and cute.

Eons ago, when dinosaurs walked the earth and I was a teenager at church camp in Beersheba Springs, Cumberland Caverns had a thing called "God of the Mountain" which was like a pre-recorded dramatic recitation of the creation story, accompanied by synchronized colored lighting of the various stalactites and stalagmites and other features in the cave. I'm sure it was probably cheesy, but at the time I thought it was incredible.

My husband and cousin said that the "God of the Mountain" display was still partially there! The tour guide told them that it had been shortened over the years, but was still essentially the same it had always been.

Please devote about half a day, a good half to go to the Parthenon. You deserve to see this art without distractions. It truely is amazing. It is sad that so many people here in middle Tennessee have never toured this work.

LOL . . . You can tell I looked at the pictures but didn't read all the captions. Sorry about that.

We went to the Ripley's Aquarium in Gatlinburg this summer and had a great time and learned so much. Cades Cove was so much fun as always even though the flood of cars tends to take away from the beauty of the scenic views.

BTW . . .

Jaxspike - Thanks for letting me know about the craft fair. I would have definately participated if I had known sooner (yes, I should've read the paper). I'll have to drop by there though, since it's not too far from my house.
