A Sports Week to Remember

This past week has to go down as one of the most memorable in sports history.
Eli Manning led the double-digit underdog Giants to the improbable Super Bowl upset of the once-invincible Patriots. I'll have to admit I didn't see it coming, but I sure hoped it would. I'm probably in the same boat as most of you. I thought New York could hang around for a while, but Tom Brady would just be too good down the stretch. Not to be. Give the G-Men all the credit…they outplayed New England from start to finish and certainly were the better team. Brady was hit over and over by that stingy Giants defense as they showed the perfect way to slow down and defeat that high-powered Patriot offense. It was a Super Bowl win for the ages. On a personal note, the best thing about the upset was to see Bill Belichick go down. A coach cannot get much more classless than him and it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with his decision to leave the field before the game was over. It does, however, have everything to do with his condensing attitude year after year, both towards the media and towards other coaches in the NFL. Not to mention, his role in the 'Spygate' scandal that is very shady at best and it's not over yet. He just comes across as a cheater, a hater and an arrogant jerk. Do you sense my sincere pleasure in the perfect season talk being squashed? On the college basketball front, Bob Knight abruptly resigned at Texas Tech, leaving the game with 902 wins as a head coach. It doesn't surprise me, though, because he's always done things a just a little different than other coaches. I'm probably in the minority, but I've always had a tremendous amount of respect for the man and loved watching his teams play (talking about fundamentally sound!). There is no doubt he made several mistakes through the years, used way too much profanity and had an explosive temper. However, I think his positives really did outweigh his negatives. Nearly every player he coached graduated, and most all of them have nothing but good things to say about what Coach Knight has meant to their lives. In addition, he's given to numerous charities and done so much for 'everyday' people that nobody ever hears about. I always enjoyed his sense of humor as well and he'll certainly go down as one of the best ever. That's why he'll always be known as "The General." Meanwhile, in Major League Baseball, steroids continue to be an unending topic. Now that well-known Yankee pitchers Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte are right in the middle of a firestorm and are having to testify before congress, you will not hear the end of this anytime soon. Stay tuned. That makes three gigantic sports stories within a few days and all will no doubt be revisited for a long, long time. |
