The Supreme Court finally, after 200 plus years ruled the Second Amendment meant what it said in plain English. Since the criteria the Justices should use is, what was the intent of the founders, one can hardly escape believing, after a successful revolution which relied on an armed populace, they intended for citizens were forever to be armed so as to fight off any oppressive government, as they had just accomplished. I haven't read the opinion nor the dissent but I look forward to doing so.
I wonder now, as other States honor each State's drivers license, marriage license as well as other instruments, will now all State's honor a gun carry permit? Although a permit and a license may be viewed as different, they both are a certification of the qualifications for one to perform certain acts. Near lifelong resident of Bedford County. Will comment on the issues of the day in, hopefully a cogent and certainly an honest manner. Will propose discussions not usually fully addressed in the mainstream media.

Carl,
Know what scared me out of the entire mess was that it was 5-4.
Yep, that was close. WAY too close for them to interpret something that, in PLAIN ENGLISH, tells them how they should rule.
I agree that it should be the right of every citizen to own a gun. However, the Constitution never said any thing about the right to own bullets.
Volfanatic.......I agree......Also says you have no enumerated right to own a piano...If we don't quit reading at the Second Amendment and get to the Nineth, "The enumeration to the Constitution of certain rights shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people," we might find some guidance on the matter.
Also, the Tenth seems applicable, I think, "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
Thanks for taking the time to comment.
I am happy about the ruling, as a life member of the NRA and several other shooting sport orgs. I, like EM, (we are agreeing alot these days, scary huh?) am worried about the vote only being 5-4. Even non gun owners should be worried, because it starts with one freedom then goes to another. Every generation loses more and more freedoms, the next generation never realizes what was lost because they never had it.
OK people find out which 4 voted againest it and lets vote them out next time they are up for election. 5-4 is way to close for me. I too am a member of the NRA. I don't care what they vote they will have to pry my gun from my cold dead hand too. Guns don't kill people... people kill people.
The supreme court judges are not elected, they are a life time appointment by the President. The five that voted for are: Chief Justice John Roberts (appointed by G.W.Bush), Antonin Scalia (Reagan), Anthony Kennedy (Reagan), Clarence Thomas (G.H.W. Bush), and Samuel Alito (G.H.W. Bush). The four that voted against are: John Stevens (Nixon), David Souter (G.H.W. Bush), Ruth Ginsberg (Clinton), and Stephen Bryer (Clinton). With an upcoming presidential election the one thing we need to look at is not who we vote out of the supreme court(can't vote them out), but who we vote into the presidency (he/she can nominate the next potential vacancy).
greasemonkey,
Yeah heh, who knew that heavy metal would be the catalyst. Here is something weird, I don't own a gun at all. Never even shot one ever. But I believe everyone should own that right until they, under due process, lose that right.
EM,
You should try shooting it is extremely stress relieving. Its something the whole family can enjoy together, and for the most part the people in the sport are all really nice. Although we get labled as gun nuts because of someone like the guy off of the movie black sheep that lived int the woods always seem to have the loudest voice. You should go to the range with me sometime, its alot of fun.
Yeah, EM, you should try it. A co-worker of mine was telling me about a range in Murfreesboro that will rent you an UZI (for use in their range, of course) and I don't think it was that expensive. I'm sure there are plenty of people in this area that have their own private "ranges" too. Besides, it's a skill that you hope you never have to use, but it would truly suck to need it and not have it.
EM, They might even let you bring a pic. of what or whom ever you might enjoy shooting to practice with. :)
Disgusted,
I would love to talk to you sometime.
Greasemonkey,
I don't have any stress, I lead a pretty good life too. I have thought about getting a handgun, I like the look of the old Colts but when I saw the price I thought, Naaa. Doesn't really justify the means. Yeah I wouldn't mind checking out the range with you, sounds pretty darn fun to have some activity other than work.
EM
I am new to this Blog'n but am far from new to firearms and the shooting sports. I have my own private range here in Bedford Co on my own property that I live on, The indoor range Thom mentioned is *SUPER NICE* but quite a drive to blow away at paper targets besides; theres no one there to show/train you how to use and or operate *safely* HANDGUNS. I am a former rangemaster from a world reknown club in Southwestern Ontario,Canada (Crumlin Sportsman Association) Anyway I built my own backstop and have a safe place to shoot outdoors and can safely get out to 100 yards (for you benchrest shooters interested) I would be willing to show you the safe operation of any firearm if interested. from revolver to blackpowder rifle to shotgun. Whatever your intrest. This goes for anyone else interested, Shelbyville needs a place for US to shoot and congregate so we can talk politics then blast a 10 ring with a .44 mag. So if anyones interested in hanging out and doing some .22 to .44 mag plinking safely and stretching out with the .308 and .223 (5.56mm) to 100 yards and seeing just how tight we can get those groups give me a shout. I am game. It's kinda boring hanging out by yourself. I mean who's ever heard of *GUN PARTIES* ya know, bring over the hot wings and beer we'll sit around and blast the TALL BOYS after we chug down that last gulp!
Anyone ineterested gimme a shout. We'll resize our brass wee fired, load'em up on the spot and re-fire'em just to say we can!
Rayz-CJ5,
Thats awesome. I have been driving to Manchester to shoot. I have also been dying to find a place here to shoot with some people. I am all about the benchrest shooting. You should e-mail me and we will get together. bumper.45acp@yahoo.com
EM,
I will warn you though, it gets addicting real quick. Like most addictions it gets expensive quick too.
Rayz,
I know who you are ... I will give you a hint, toolbox full of DVDs.
Dear Volfanatic,
Your comment that the constitution gives one the right to posess a firearm but, says nothing of the privilege to own a bullet, brings to mind a recent disertation by my class professor, wherein he opined:
"A 'bolt' is nothing more than a circular lever until its mate, the nut, is attached. Then, and only then, does it become a bolt."
So, shall we say that a 'gun' without a bullet(s) is nothing more than a projectile receptacle waiting to be born a firearm?
Now, my Dear Sir, where does that leave us?
Or, more frightening, how will that affect the Supreme Court Justices when they learn of this fact? Will they rush to reconvene for further consideration? Let us watch them for to see.
But then, decent and bright men, all nine, both sayers and neysayers, there is the distinct possiblilty they already knew!
respectfully
garhawk
My other half is interested and so am I. Please contact us at mkr2c@mtsu,edu.
Haven't been shooting in a while and would like to practice again.
OK EM, I tried to call you and got that standard voicemail???????? Whats up with that????? I know your up all night!

Evil Monkey
Yea, you know me!
Hey all.
