Primary Election

Posted Monday, August 11, 2008, at 11:47 AM

There was an amazing happening on Primary Election day last week. It occurred in the 9th Congressional District of Tennessee in the race for Congressman. The players were Steve Cohen and Nikki Tinker. One is white and a Jew, Cohen, and the other a black, church going lady, Tinker. Both are lawyers.

The significant factor here is in a District that is near 100% Christian and 60+% black where the typical and predominant voter is a church going black lady, a white Jewish man won against one of the very demographic most influential in the District. He won for the best of all reasons. He is the best person for the job. By the way the vote totals were 79% Cohen and 19% Tinker.

This race should give hope to all who run. The monolithic, amorphous mass that Jesse Jackson, et al, would like to see is no more. Good and reasonable folk of all races can, should and in this case do, vote for the candidate who can best represent the issues as they see them with no regard to insignificant adjectives preceding their names.

Steve Cohen is a one term incumbent in the Seat held for 30+ years by Harold Ford, Sr. and Jr, both of course are black. While I'm sure the citizens were happy with the representation by the Ford's so have they been happy with the representation of Cohen. They just want someone who will do the job as they see it should be done, with no regard for race. Is not that refreshing?

As an aside, the Tinker campaign played the race card two days before the election by trying to tie Cohen to the KKK. The numbers quickly denote the folly of such an asinine approach to one of Cohen's demonstrated character.

Hi Aahn--gee.

With gas prices, food prices, no jobs, iraq, can't afford college, no energy plan, tanked economy who give a mickey-fickin' about the color or religious background of someone? This is about the best candidate, period. Nikki Tinker, again, thought the AA community was asleep but they were wide awake and like the democratic primaries, said NO MORE OF THAT. Sent girlfriend back to where she came from, hopefully for GOOD.
