Cobb v Blanton

It seems as though our local Representative race has started off negative. I have noticed over the years that the first one to "go negative" is one who is far behind. So I imagine Barbara Blanton feels she has little chance to win on the issues since she goes negative on her first advertising piece.

She seems to think we all should be aghast at the notion Curt Cobb voted against a bill requiring driver's licenses be given only in English. They are presently offered in Korean, Spanish, Japanese and English. Note not Somalian! This area is beholden to Japan for the many, many good paying jobs Nissan has created in the middle Tennessee area. At any given time they will have dozens, if not hundreds, of legal Japanese citizens in this area for training and management purposes. I suppose the fact they are more comfortable in Japanese makes no difference to Blanton. Just throw out the Japanese would obviously suit her as her desire is for English only.

These reasons are enough for Representative Cobb to be concerned, but the real reason for his vote in not so complex but apparently it is for Blanton. Cobb, as do all Representatives swear an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States and of Tennessee. The Tennessee Constitution requires in the State Legislature all bills pertain only to what is stated in the Title (Caption) of the bill. This particular bill referred to by Blanton was captioned to consider toll roads. An amendment was offer to be tacked on requiring English only driver's license test. Since driver's licenses and toll roads are totally unrelated, Curt Cobb voted to defeat as to allow its passage would be unconstitutional. You would think someone who asks you to trust them to represent you in the House would know this.

Also displaying her total lack of understanding of the process, she condemns Cobb for voting against requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote and to vote. The bill she cites Cobb voting against required among many things, a photo ID, which, of course is usually a driver's license. What she doesn't say is he voted so as not to disenfranchise approximately 220-230,000 senior citizens who do not have a photo on their driver's license! Photos are optional on the driver licenses of senior citizens. Wouldn't you rather have a Representative who knew these "minor" details?

Mrs. Blanton has obviously hired some political research service to dig up dirt on Cobb. Perhaps if she took the time to understand the process in Tennessee she wouldn't need to spend money on some research service.

That is such a shame . . . Curt Cobb is a great guy who works hard for his constituents.

Mrs. Blanton should have fired the political research service since they are clearly don't understand the way laws are made.

Sat in a room tonight with Curt Cobb, while we all watched the debate... Very good man, even though there are minor differences between our philosophies, he is THE man for the job... he has done a phenomenal job, thus far, and will continue to do a phenomenal job, upon re-election.

Carl, I realize this question is well off the given topic, but I have to ask: Were you also a supporter of Tyrus?

Appreciating the differences of Steve and Eve are not minor.

Excellent blog, Mr. McClanahan. I have taken notice to two advertising pieces I have received from Blanton - which were both very "negative" toward Cobb. I personally do not "go for" such advertising. This helps me make my decision very quickly as to who needs to be in office. Instead of attacking competition, let me know who "you" are, what "you" stand for, and what "you" will do that will convince me "you" are the "right" person for the office.

Representative Cobb has done a fine job representing the people of this district. He is honest and hardworking and does not deserve the attacks by Mrs. Blanton. She obviously is very desperate at this point and will try to do anything to win. She's only digging a bigger hole for herself.

Representative Cobb and Senator Tracy both have done a great job for our community and both deserve to be reelected.

To parkerbrothers...I couldn't have said it better myself. LOL

I very much agree with you on this Carl. Blanton forgets that this is a small town and that most of us actually know Curt and Jim and what they stand for. It is ridiculous to me that Blanton would actually believe that the voting public would be fooled by this sort of negative and false attack. I have heard around town that she is not a very good person and now she has done much to convince us all that she doesn't deserve our confidence.

Curt Cobb is a wonderful upstanding family man. He is a fine Representative for Bedford County and the State of Tennessee. I have known him personally for many years. I have been told that Ms. Blanton is a "classy lady". Obviously not Curt Cobb's class!

Thank you Carl for once again bringing out the truth and calling things as they are!

Memyselfi.......Yes

Parkerbrothers, lane04...Please inform a feeble brain what you mean by your statements. I'm not sure and like to be sure what you mean before I comment. If you mean to imply Curt Cobb is a supporter of same sex marriages, you need to check your sources a little better. Rep. Cobb has been a life long supporter of the notion that marriage is to be recognized and legal only when joining a man and woman.

cmcclanahan,

You could check your sources a little better and you will know what could or could not be implied.

Actually it was just an open ended comment that you can take as you see fit.

Carl,

I actually know Curt Cobb quite well and know that you are correct in your assessment of him. Curt is a smart young man that has his head screwed on right.

-- Posted by parkerbrothers on Sat, Oct 4, 2008, at 12:15 PM

I agree, Curt is in my mind one of the most common sense politicians I have known. A rare quality these days. I don't care what Barbara Blanton stands for, there is no way that she could ever be less polarizing than Curt. Look at his mail pieces and compare them to Blanton's. His are classy and informative of his views. He, thus far, has not fell into the trap of negativity that she has so strongly attempted to lure him into. On the other hand, her ads spend more time attacking him than talking about herself. Let alone the inaccuracies.

The only thing that I disagree with Carl about is when he says that she has a total lack of understanding about the legislative process. I believe that she knows well that process and has attempted to play on our ignorance of that process to try and convince us that Curt has a bad voting record. She was a State Senator in Mississippi herself. She knows exactly what she is doing. She knows how people intentionally add amendments to bills that are not a part of the Caption knowing up front that it is unconstitutional to allow it and forcing opponents to vote down a controversial subject.

Oh yes, she instead is intentionally using material that she knows is false. She is intentionally trying to mislead us. Is this the type of qualities that we are looking for in our next State Representative? Instead, I will just take a straight talking country boy who says what he means and means what he says. I will vote for honesty and integrity.

I know Barbara Blanton personally and she is a very nice and gracious Christian lady with a lot of class.

As an experienced legislator, she is highly repected for her integrity and as one will stand up for the rights of the people on tough issues.

She has demonstrated great vision, organizational

skills, determination and perseverance to successfully accomplish tasks and projects.

Barbara Blanton is a great asset for Shelbyville and Bedford Count.

Frodo,

Since you know Barbara personally, Ask her why she decided to twist the truth to suit a unwise propaganda campaign against a man who has never ONCE hurt or taken anyone down in such a manner. Every single piece is about what he has done and plans to do. Take it from Bilbo and destroy the ring at once.

-- Posted by Evil Monkey on Mon, Oct 6, 2008, at 6:06 PM

The fact is that Cobb's voting record is relevant in this election. You only have to go online for a few minutes to find out for yourself that Cobb's voting record does not reflect the values and opinions of our area. I don't understand it when people get so upset when a candidate points out how an incumbent has voted. Most of us have no idea how our representatives vote-we just assume because "he or she is nice". Pointing out the differences between yourself and your opponent is not negative-it's called informing the voters.

-- Posted by fairfieldtiger on Mon, Oct 6, 2008, at 8:50 PM

fairfieldtiger.....Not if it is deceptive or wrong. In the two issues I outlined, her written advertisement pieces were exactly as explained so her simple statements were grossly deceptive if not utter falsehoods. By the way, I know how my representives in both State houses vote. So can anyone else who is interested and will take a little time. One cannot be informed and understand the process if driven only by assumptions of assumptions as you suggest.

-- Posted by cmcclanahan on Mon, Oct 6, 2008, at 10:22 PM

Frodo... If you think that Blanton is a nice and gracious Christian, I can't wait for you to get to know our Curt Cobb. While Blanton demonstrates her graciousness and Christian values with deceptive advertisements that prey on the uneducated, Cobb continues to take the high road and stay out of the mudslinging even though he must be tempted to throw back a few stones himself. Instead of just talking about being Christian, Cobb actually demonstrates those qualities by turning the other cheek and refusing to indulge in seedy politics.

I just wish he wouldn't keep on voting for Jimmy 'Boss Hogg' Naifeh.

CW2460,

I personally know Curt Cobb and his mother, late father, grandfather, grandmother and uncles and aunts.

Do you know them ?

They are fine, honorable and respectable people.

I would never think or say anything negatively about him or them.

I am not a politican and could care less about petty politics.

However, I do have the right to to make a statement just as you have. I assume this to be an American board.

-- Posted by Frodo on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 1:52 PM

As do I

-- Posted by cw2460 on Wed, Oct 8, 2008, at 11:12 AM

Actually, if you have people to cast the stones for you, is there any need for one to throw them themselves?
