Cobb v Blanton IIPosted Sunday, October 12, 2008, at 4:10 PM
Well, it seems as though Barbara Blanton is going to base her entire campaign on negative advertisement as her second mailing attacks Rep. Cobb's record in a negative vein. I guess Mrs. Blanton is getting rather desperate since her rantings in this week's mail piece has the ring of desperation about them. She, among other issues, obviously thinks the Tennessee Lottery should not maintain a surplus against a funding shortfall in the future.
First we are to believe Curt Cobb is against giving the local school system $7.5 million dollars! How dastardly! The problem with this position is it is totally misleading, unwise and displays at best only a very elementary understanding of the process. The truth is the lottery has a surplus fund balance of less that $400 million dollars as we speak. Prudence dictates a large surplus fund is necessary to assure funding of Hope Scholarships. The Tennessee Lottery is now mature and growth has disappeared and net proceeds have been declining. This should not be surprising since the lottery is a reflection of spending of discretionary dollars and in the present economic atmosphere, discretionary dollars are more rare than usual. The Tennessee Constitution Art XI, Sec. 5 requires that the Lottery first, fund financial assistance to citizens to attend post-secondary educational institutions. Any surplus may only be used for "(1) Capital outlay projects for K-12 educational facilities; and (2) Early learning programs and after school programs." Rep. Cobb along with 90+% of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle voted to fund $100 million dollars this year from the surplus to be used by schools for projects to increase energy efficiency at schools across the state. Such a capital expenditure will allow local schools to reap an on-going benefit from lower energy costs. Such was the reckoning of the near entire House in which Curt Cobb sits. So had you rather deplete the entire surplus in an environment of falling revenues, thus jeopardizing the full funding of the Hope Scholarship Program, and had you rather espouse populist politics and to hell with being responsible or had you rather have someone in the House who has demonstrated a knowledge of the system and a record of doing what is best for Bedford County and the State at large? Not much of decision from where I sit. Also Mrs. Blanton, in rather large print, wrote. "But Cobb voted FOR an $8 million underground party room at the Governor's mansion." I really don't know how to address this statement civilly because it is entirely false! ( I want to say a lie but I won't) Fact: NOT ONE PENNY OF TAXPAYER FUNDS WENT TO FUND THE "UNDERGROUND PARTY ROOM." That is as strongly as I can state it. Conservation Hall, the "underground party room" was funded totally with private funds. Approximately $6 million dollars from the Residence Foundation. The only taxpayer money involved in the total project went to repair and upgrade the Mansion including Federally mandated accouterments to meet the dictates of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which was the largest single expenditure at nearly $3 million dollars. I can say no more about this cheap shot than to challenge Mrs. Blanton to produce one piece of credible evidence that clearly shows Rep. Curt Cobb voted for a single penny to fund the construction of Conservation Hall! Just as an aside, Mrs. Blanton states on the same mail piece referred to above, "And Barbara will insist that HOPE scholarships are protected with a reserve fund. She'll safeguard HOPE scholarships before excess funds are released to local schools." Interesting statement since on the other side of the mailing piece, she vilifies Curt Cobb because he will not send the total surplus dollars directly to local schools! Oh well, just one more insult to my limited intelligence. I also think it rather interesting Mrs. Blanton is so knowledgeable of Curt Cobb's political history but never mentions her own. Maybe I can help her get the story out. Did you know: 1. She registered as a Democrat in the 1998, 2000 and 2002 Primary elections in Bedford Cty. Her husband registered as a Democrat in the 1998 and 2002 primary elections in Bedford Cty. 2. As Mississippi Senator, she voted to raise her own retirement. 3. Being a conservative voice and claims to being a spending watchdog, in the Mississippi Senate she voted to raise sales tax 17%, lifting the state cap on property tax rates, increase tax and fee rates on timber production, gas use, phone calls, utilities and car rentals. Also she voted to increase the amount of highway contracts that could be awarded without competitive bids. 4. She voted against a lottery Just a few issues to give you a flavor of Mrs. Blanton's political record and hopefully inspire you to look maybe a little deeper than her misleading and false ads before making up your mind who to support in this race. By the way, she served in the Mississippi Senate from 1988 to 1992. Bet you didn't know she was defeated in her bid for re-election in 1991 in her Party's Primary Election! For any Party to condone a serious candidate of their Party to run against a Party incumbent is rather unusual, don't you think? Near lifelong resident of Bedford County. Will comment on the issues of the day in, hopefully a cogent and certainly an honest manner. Will propose discussions not usually fully addressed in the mainstream media.

Mr. Cobb, I mean Mr. McClanahan....I know this is a blog, but it sure seems like an extension of the Cobb Campaign. I find your version of "negative campaigning" to be quite weak, especially the part about Blanton "registering" as a Democrat. Give me a break. Just because someone votes in a party primary doesn't mean that you're "registering" as a member of that party. Who hasn't voted in both a Republican and Democrat primary, especially from the state level down? I'll give you a few examples of why Cobb has not earned my support. First off, his seemingly unending support of House Speaker Jimmy "the Boss" Naifeh. In 2006, Cobb voted to give convicted felons the right to vote. Cobb has opposed efforts to require proof of citizenship to register to vote. The list goes on and on, but I'm sure you'll be able to explain Cobb's votes for him.
Fairfieldtiger,
All your claims are baseless if you show no evidence. Carl's claims are substantiated as he shows examples. How many people have changed party affiliated? Actually it is very rare; most people stay within democrat, republican or independant mindset if they don't vote within their party. It seems Barbara is having an identity problem and might want to seek assistance instead of attacking others.
fairfield tiger,
I appreciate your position that you can support your candidate and I cannot support mine. If you could read you would know from a previous blog that Curt Cobb didn't vote against proof of citizenship to vote, he voted against usurping 200,000 plus senior citizen's right to vote.
Mrs. Blanton's voting habits are not a part of her negative campaigning. I cannot imagine anyone with walking around sense not seeing I wrote those facts, and I repeat facts, as an item of interest that might be of value to the voters for evaluating the candidates.
Whether or not Cobb has your support or not has absolutely nothing to do with the varacity of what I said and I dare say is meaningless to most other people.
fairfieldtiger . . . the two examples you gave for reasons to not vote for him are fairly weak at best and actually are not the whole truth. As a whole, Cobb has done a lot that has benefitted Bedford County and yet doesn't seem to resort to negative campaigning like some other candidates.
I like to vote for people who have a stand on the issues instead of resorting to name calling and negative attacks.
Political "spin" is so bad that I rarely take anything for face value. As I recall in a previous post by Carl, the bill being referred to about voting registration affected illegal citizens AND elderly. If that is correct, Carl is focusing on one part and Barbara on another. Who's right?
Somewhere in my mind I also thought some tax payer money was diverted on the Governor's mansion but this too may be based on how one looks at it. Were the aspects that the public paid for brought on by the addition of the "party room"?
Were funds diverted from "Peter to pay Paul"? Unless I see the books and canceled checks, I would bet "creative financing" took place. Guess I have become quite cynical and distrusting of government in general.
I am probably registered as a Republican since I get a lot of their news, but I cross party lines all the time and especially in local contests. Heck with as many good Democrats as there are who run unopposed, I would hardly get to vote otherwise.
It is really hard to know who to vote for...I never know when to trust what any of them are talking about....Each and everyone of them are going to put each other down as much as they can...They are all going to say what they are going to do for us...But will they really do what they say once they get in office ??????
Needless to say I am impressed that Cobb sends out campaign material without attacking, and I am not impressed that Blanton sends out material that is attacking.
Mr. McClanahan, I am impressed with your blogs regarding the election. We are on the same track. Keep up the work!
Steve.....Thanks for your comments. One point, the bill concerning seniors was a very clear either or. Do you want to require a photo ID for voting? If you do, with this bill, you would have disenfranchised 220-230,000 senior citizens who do not have their photo on their driver's license. As the bill came to a vote, you couldn't have both. If yes the above became law and many seniors could not vote, and if you voted no then it did not become law and the seniors could vote. You couldn't have it both ways. Which would you suggest our representative vote for?
As to the underground room, please direct me to where one cent of taxpayer's money was used, directly or indirectly. I spent a long, long time trying to find such and could not. Perhaps I missed it so I asked if anyone could document I am wrong. So far no one has.
rebelrose......I share your concerns, but fortunately in the race for State Representatives we have two candidates so we can look at their records to see their voting history and don't have to rely on what they say. I just hope anyone caring to look at either candidate look at both. I did.
If a senior wanted to vote could they not get a picture put on their drivers license?
Devan....Thanks for the commment...Unfortunately that was not the question...The legislators had to vote within one or two minutes, up or down on the bill before them, not how it might be a better bill. I come down on the side of the seniors in this case as their right to vote would be gone until some future bill, probably after several months at least could be passed.
Why can't fairfield tiger read? Was he educated under the system voted on numerous times by Curt Cobb and "Big Hoss" Naifeh? Or can fairfield tiger read after all, and the comment that he cannot read was a vicious and untrue attack from the Cobb mouthpiece Carl McClanahan!
All sarcasm aside, it is at least slightly ironic that Carl McClanahan stooped to juvenile taunting in a strand regarding his dislike for Barbara Blanton's negative campaign.
I personally think Carl should take a self-imposed break from the blog in lieu of punishment from John Carney. Three weeks and two days seems about right for this offense.
aveteran,
You're an idiot. <===blatant attack on you. Whatcha gonna do about it? Nothing. Now go cry.
Now now Evil Monkey . . . when you lower your standards to their level then you only validate their insane drivel.
We wouldn't want that!
Carl, I apparently got two of your paragraphs mixed up from a previous post.
I have a few more clarifications I wold like to get but this conversation has gone down hill, so I won't be back to check it out.
Maybe another time.
Steve,
Understand
How surprising! I have made maybe two comments on the t-g boards and I have already been blasted by Evil Monkey and piled upon by jaxspike. It really is as easy as it looks to rattle the monkey cage. You two apparently have lots of time on your hands.
My comment was directed at Carl. He is railing against negative ads and says "If you could read...". Carl is an actual blogger alongside actual reporters on a real newspaper website. I didn't attack an anonymous blogger. I tried to use wit to point out his ironic statement, with no malice intended. The "Hoss" line and the mouthpiece comment are from bloggers on this or other posts of Carl's. And, the part about John Carney was a joke with the punishment ending after election day.
Now, I could slow down and fill in the blanks, but I don't get the impression that you two wait until you are finished reading to start responding, so I doubt it is worth the trouble. And, we are apparently doomed to hear something trite or paranoid from you every 15 minutes or so. I guess it might as well be your fabulously crafted "You're an idiot" line. Well done, boys! I have been slammed by two of the greats(sarcastically inflected)!
jaxspike,
LOL it was being sarcastic how someone attacks someone for stating the person is attacking someone else yet didn't attack, he just stated the obvious inconsistancies in Blanton's accusations.
aveteran,
Obviously, if you read any of my other comments I normally spend a little more effort and use common sense. I didn't feel the need as you don't have a clue what you are talking about. Apparently you didn't read Carl's blog, where he outlined the issues and where they didn't coincide with Blanton's misunderstanding of the pieces of legistation being passed. It was pretty simple COMMON SENSE that persuaded me to respond to you in the appropriate manner.
If you care to meet me anytime in person to discuss this, rest assured many people know me personally and I have no qualms in voicing my opinion to anyone at anytime.
I know this is off topic, I woke up Wednesday morning to find a Curt Cobb sign in my front yard! I don't have a problem with it but I do wonder where it came from?
It was me, Sorry.
Bad monkey! Bad, bad monkey! :) ... :)
It was me, Sorry.
