Tracy v Rogers III

Posted Friday, October 31, 2008, at 8:46 PM

I guess I can now boast about being right again. Don't get that chance too often so I don't know how to act. Seems Mrs. Jean Anne Rogers is desperate and has employed the absolutely classic tactic of slamming her opponent just before the election since she has gotten no traction on the issues throughout the campaign.

I just received a mailer whereby she alleges Jim Tracy is so all powerful he is single-handedly and with nefarious purpose changing Tennessee's "Symbols." Wow! I know Jim very well but didn't know he was so devious. Thank you Mrs. Rogers for informing we mere folk who are the progeny of the long ago "Know Nothing" Party.

Mrs. Rogers alleges Senate Bills 2733 and 3614 are the mechanisms by which Sen. Tracy carries out his wicked purpose, so lets analysis these Bills legislative journeys. First 3614.

Senate Bill 3614 was introduced in the Senate Standing Committee of Environment, Conservation and Tourism. This Committee is chaired by Sen. Kilby, (D). Note D! The Bill carried a Fiscal Note, as all bills do, that is an estimate by Legislative Staff as to the cost or cost savings the Bill will impact the state's budget. This process produced the finding that the State would loose $2,640,500 in revenues with a state revenue increase of a one-time expense of $458,000 and a recurring expense of $330,000. Also estimated on the fiscal note was local spending would be impacted by a one-time expense of $8,910,000. As is common in the Senate, and House also, bills with a requirement of altering the state budget when and if passed are placed "behind the budget" which simply means if you want the bill passed, find the revenues so the impact on the budget is zero. Novel concept, if only Washington was looking. I guess Mrs. Rogers would cavalierly seek to pass the bill and then tell the local government they need a new nearly ten million dollars!

Senate Bill 2733/House Bill 3156 was essentially the same bill with exactly the same fiscal note. 3614 didn't move but 2733 did. It was placed on notice in the Senate Committee named above. Before any action by the Senate, the House moved the Bill to a summer study committee thereby guarantying the Bill would not be acted on by the 105th General Assembly. This being done the Senate could not act due to the up-coming session being the 106th. Any unfinished "business" of the 105th does not carry over to the 106th and must be reintroduced. Would be nice is Mrs. Roger's expertise extended to at least a rudimentary knowledge of the procedures and rules of the Senate.

Well, there you have the rest of the story. Remember that last minute negative slams are the clear mark of desperation by a losing campaign. So in my best feeble abilities as a true mugwamp I ride off into that good night.

"Remember that last minute negative slams are the clear mark of desperation by a losing campaign."

is this a thinly veiled criticism of the mccain campaign?

lazarus.....I am not noted for "thinly veiling" anything. I thought both the national candidates have been very negative for near the entire campaign.

-- Posted by cmcclanahan on Fri, Oct 31, 2008, at 9:47 PM

actually, while neither has shied away from negative campaigning, the mccain campaign has been quite a bit more negative, especially down the stretch.

this has nothing to do with who is the better person, and everything to do with who is ahead.

were the polls reversed, so would be the behavior.

this is how the game is played, because it works. dont blame the candidates, blame the voters who buy into this nonsense.

Funny because it is exactly the case for the McCain campaign... None of it has stuck either. It won't work for Jean Ann, even though I voted for her... She needs to move on because we are all over that method of vote getting.

-- Posted by darrick_04 on Fri, Oct 31, 2008, at 10:31 PM

Why did you vote for her then?

-- Posted by jaxspike on Fri, Oct 31, 2008, at 11:05 PM

Maybe because he's a red dog democrat? That's the only thing I can think of.

-- Posted by DoubleJ on Sat, Nov 1, 2008, at 10:15 AM

I am curious on the negative campaigning she has done as I have not recieved any of hers. Did she sponsor it or was it released by the democratic party? To me, that makes a huge difference to me. I always vote for the person who takes the high road and addresses the issues.

It feels good to read all this stuff and not worry anymore.Because I VOTED on thursday and I feel good about it. My Vote Counted

EM........I agree. Her piece was released by she and her campaign. As you know, the state requires the entity responsible to identify themselves as she does as "Paid for Jean Anne Rogers for State Senate, Paula Thomas, CPA, Treasure." I also am not aware of any other negative ads supporting her campaign.

Just because she will lose, like Chuck Baldwin doesn't mean I shouldn't vote for who I wanted to win... I met her personally, as I said in one of Carl's many rants about her... and after speaking to her face to face and hearing her out, I realized how tangible her ideas and ambitions were.

-- Posted by darrick_04 on Sat, Nov 1, 2008, at 4:07 PM

And because you are a liberal, that was good enough automatically? Even though, Tracy is a much better candidate and has done great things for this county and will continue to do so. He will win big on Tuesday because of that. Vote the person, not the party! That's the biggest problem with this country. Way too many people vote party, party, party all the way down the ballot. Cobb and Tracy both deserve re-election this year.

-- Posted by DoubleJ on Sat, Nov 1, 2008, at 6:06 PM

Darrick.......I too have talked to Mrs. Rogers.....Please point out my "many rants about her." I don't recall them nor can I find them.

-- Posted by cmcclanahan on Sat, Nov 1, 2008, at 7:55 PM

DoubleJ,

Guess what.. only you and the hosts of SuperTalk radio still fear the word liberal. It's hilarious. Because I am not.. In fact I was intent on voting for Tracy and believe I told you BEFORE in a very similar blog that I will be delighted if he wins... I believe both will do a fine job. Why must you repeat the same thing when we just discussed this very issue in Carl's two previous blogs about these two candidates?

I have absolutely no qualms with Tracy, but it just so happens I voted for the person I actually met, not just because she has a D beside her name.

-- Posted by darrick_04 on Sat, Nov 1, 2008, at 10:12 PM

I didnt mean it that way . . . I mean why did you vote for her if you disagreed with her campaign tactics? I could care less if she has a chance to lose or win . . . you dont vote on that criteria.

-- Posted by jaxspike on Sun, Nov 2, 2008, at 12:28 PM

I voted 8 days before this blog and received no such campaign literature... My question for Carl is, what if Curt Cobb or Tracy produced the same memorabilia to folks who are on their respective target lists? What if they have and it just so happens that like me, he was not a recipient of such mail pieces? Would he then disown them and shun their campaigns or simply brush it off as necessary?

There is absolutely no way to be all things for all people, and somewhere along the way someone will get upset... But I honestly could care less because I STILL will be happy with either candidate.

-- Posted by darrick_04 on Sun, Nov 2, 2008, at 4:12 PM

Darrick....I can tell you with absolutely certainty neither Tracy nor Cobb have done as you suggest. I know you do not claim they did and pose a hypothetical scenario. If we get to hypotheticals we can spend every waking minute on such and will learn nothing. I am aware you have said nothing negative about Tracy. But let me pose a situation you will see in your lifetime, probably more that once and since I maintain it is a near 100% likelyhood, it is not hypothetical.

You are young and idealistic. Not a bad thing. I suggest you will see, as most of us do, soon your idealism will morph into realism as you travel out into the real world on your own. I know you will work somewhere where you do good work and will have an idiot for a boss. You will not get credit for you efforts and someone of much less ability will get the promotion or the big raise. This will happen in the real world, as I have said, probably more than once. You will think this atrocious behavior and cannot understand why it happened.

If you will, don't tell me, nor anyone else, but just think back to 2008 when you fired Jim Tracy, who you knew did a great job, and hired someone you had met only briefly and knew nothing about. See, things come around snapping at our butts when we forget our actions, and we don't remember we treated people the exact same way.

Anyway, my wife and others who know me well will tell you I am still much more idealist than one my age and experience should be, but I follow Cervantes and win a few and lose a few. By the way, for what it is worth I have personally admonished Tracy and Cobb about being negative. If either did I would be very disappointed. I think it is beneath them both. They have excellent records to run on that will stand-up to any honest scrutiny so why worry about the actions of the opposition. (I wrote this comment in the "box" and have not proofed it so please be quite syntax police. Thank you.)

-- Posted by cmcclanahan on Sun, Nov 2, 2008, at 7:52 PM

Reading your above comment Carl brings up an intersting point about the subject of experience. I am afraid so many of the younger people of today have devalued the realistic knowledge that comes from someones' life long experiences and replaced it with simple idealistic opinions gathered from little more than watching a News Show or reading an article than immediately transforms them into a liberal know it all.

But at least there is hope for them as time allows your great comment...."soon your idealism will morph into realism as you travel out into the real world on your own."..... to become a reality.

If only more time could have passed before the "Charismatic One" got his chance to cleverly draw so many out of the "bushes" and "closets" where most liberals were birthed and have resided, into the polls to vote for him, experienced and conservative realism might have prevailed.

-- Posted by parkerbrothers on Mon, Nov 3, 2008, at 7:17 AM

Carl, I would like to also add that my "experiences" with Curt Cobb agrees with your lifelong "experiences" with Curt Cobb and I see the the great qualities and ambitions that he has that he no doubtedly aquired from his lifelong "experiences" raised in a local family that had and has so much Realistic Life Experience.

Now if Obama brought the type of "experience" that Curt Cobbs' heart and mind has in it to the table he would of had at least one Conservative Realist voting for him along with the vast deceived multitude of liberals he drew out of the "bushes" and "closets" to the polls.

-- Posted by parkerbrothers on Mon, Nov 3, 2008, at 7:40 AM

Great posts Carl and parkerbrothers! I couldn't have said it much better myself. That idealism along with an extremely biased mainstream media will probably be the difference in this election. Voters are voting on style instead of substance, idealism over realism, and public appeal over long-term experience and associations. Change is just a catchy slogan and an excuse. We all know real change is not going to happen either way. Carl, you hit the nail on the head with the local races. Why would you vote for either challenger, despite your party affiliation or otherwise, when the incumbents are doing such a great job for this city and county? They have terrific records to run on and they will only do more down the road. It's all about substance, experience, and integrity. Whether it's McCain, Cobb, or Tracy, each fit the mold.

-- Posted by DoubleJ on Mon, Nov 3, 2008, at 8:42 AM

Funny

Because I have met Curt Cobb at least three of four times and I do believe he supports Obama... Unless of course he was just telling the crowd of 100+ what we wanted to hear... and there was that rally we held which he attended, as well as 60+ Bedford Countians where he again mentioned his support for Obama...

But that's neither here nor there, it's just who our candidate supports ;)

-- Posted by darrick_04 on Mon, Nov 3, 2008, at 10:22 AM

That makes our point, darrick. Vote for the person, not the party. Curt may support Obama (publicly, although I suspect he doesn't represent his values at all and his actual vote may go elsewhere), but everyone should vote based on what he's done for us. We shouldn't care about anything else.

-- Posted by DoubleJ on Mon, Nov 3, 2008, at 11:07 AM

I voted for the person... so get over it.

-- Posted by darrick_04 on Mon, Nov 3, 2008, at 11:33 AM

Ok, hearing all of these pro Curt Cobb posts mingled with anti Obama means I will ask Curt later on why he feels the need to tell people what they want to hear (I assumed he fully supported Obama publicly and privately), just to get elected... If that is the case, then he is no better than anyone else running...

Why do you suggest his vote would go the other way when he publicly supports Obama? It just seems like you accuse of him of stating whatever it takes to please the Democratic base (his constituency).

I voted for Cobb, Tracy, Alexander, and Obama...so there is no party bias here.. and I have a feeling each of the ones I voted for, will win.

-- Posted by Vindicated on Mon, Nov 3, 2008, at 11:38 AM

Obama will not win Tennessee, but I think you're right on the other three. Good for you, though, voting for the person and not the party. My guess is a lot of politicians, from time to time, cast their actual vote for someone different than those they support publicly. Such is the reality of politics. However, we'll never know for sure in most all situations.

Obama will not win Tennessee, but I think you're right on the other three.

-- Posted by DoubleJ on Mon, Nov 3, 2008, at 3:11 PM

DoubleJ,

Are you trying to say that the majority of Tennesseans still have a little sense left? Sounds like it to me.

-- Posted by parkerbrothers on Mon, Nov 3, 2008, at 5:37 PM

You better believe it. Thank goodness. I'm thinking about having to get a bumper sticker fairly soon, though, that reads "Don't blame me, I voted for McCain-Palin".

-- Posted by DoubleJ on Mon, Nov 3, 2008, at 6:43 PM

DoubleJ,

I am actually working on bumper stickers right now. Traded a sign company in Murfreesboro a laser engraver that I had for a large format printer they had that will print vinyl and banners. Although I just got off the phone with H.P. technical support after 3.5 hours of tyring to master the dialect of the H.P. person in Costa Rico while he walked me through the firmware download I believe it will be worth it to be able to print my own bumper stickers as I like. I am going to offer free bumper stickers to anyone who was not deceived by the Charismatic One.

I think the first one will say "I am blaming you, you voted for Obama".

-- Posted by parkerbrothers on Mon, Nov 3, 2008, at 7:20 PM

Parkerbrothers,

Sir I accept your offer on the bumpersticker. As I was definitely not decieved. And I will display it with honor.

-- Posted by cherokee2 on Thu, Nov 6, 2008, at 7:56 AM

I guess everyone will have to replace those, 'Dont blame me, I voted for Kerry' bumper stickers that sold out in 2004...
