  • Everyone should look up the Barbary wars and Thomas Jefferson.

  • SharonSue65.....the Barbary pirates were, as you know, Muslim

  • Carl, I find it amazing that you believe to have the ability to just look at a person and determine their religious affiliation.

How do you know that you've never seen a Muslim Girl Scout?

There are over 3 million Muslims in America.

They work as doctors and nurses in our hospitals. Some are musicians in our finest orchestras.

They march in parades in marching bands.

So don't feel bad. You haven't lived a sheltered life.

You've seen all those things. You just didn't realize it.

As to the history of Muslims in America, most were brought over as slaves. But some were here before that in the Spanish colonies. There are some reports of Muslims aboard Christopher Columbus' ship and others that had settled in the Caribbean in the 17th century.

There are over 5000 Muslims in the U.S. Military today.

And Muslims have fought in every war since the Revolutionary War. That includes The Civil War, World War I and II, Vietnam, and every other war to date.

So the next time that little Girl Scout knocks on your door selling cookies, it's very possible she could be Muslim too.

Hope that doesn't freak you out too much.

  • Rocket Valentine,I know Muslims didn't fight for the south during the civil war as they wouldn't fight beside Jews.In the Confederate army there were Irish,Chinese,Cherokee,Chickasaw,Jewish, Choctaw, blacks,German,Scotch Irish,Prussian, and hispanic. If there were any Muslims,it would've been documented or spoken of.Matter of fact one of the best Southern generals was Patrick Cleburne who believed in giving slaves their freedom if they fought for the south. He was a immigrant from Ireland.I forgot Australians served on the CSA ship.CSS Shenandoah. So please share with me the documentation of Muslims in the Civil War.Maybe you've found something that the rest of us have never seen before.

  • There were around 300 Muslims that were documented fighting in The Civil War.

Although over 90% of them fought on the side of the Union, there was a handful that reportedly fought for the Confereracy.

Your assumption that Muslims "wouldn't fight beside Jews" couldn't be accurate, or that would mean that no Jewish men fought for the Union. Which is not the case either.

The highest ranking Muslim officer during the war was Captain Moses Osman, who served with the 104th Illinois Infantry.

Another one of the more prominent Muslims in the Union Army was Nicholas Said, who fought with the 55th Massachusetts Colored Regiment and rose to the rank of Sergeant.

Another popular Muslim from the Civil War was a man named Hajj Ali (aka Hi Jolly) who was enlisted with the Union Calvery to tend military camels.

It's odd that a Civil War buff such as yourself has no knowledge about any of this.

But glad I could help out.

  • I'd say kudos but the Confederate took over the camels. But my question is where are the names of Confederate muslims.I know about the Union ones, but where or who are the Mustom ones?I ask and am starting this debate as most argue that there were no black Confederate soldiers.I searched last night and it is guessed maybe 10 at most which given the Muslim hatred for the Confederate flag today makes me question it.I deal in facts and records and there are many out there who want to make up history. Also Hi Jolly was the gentleman who came over with the Camel corps experiment that was the idea of Jefferson Davis. Please keep searching so that the names of Confederate muslims can be shared. So far I have found no names.

  • Well, if nothing else at least we may have cleared up a few things for Carl.

As he was under the impression that no Muslims had ever fought in any wars for The United States.

  • For some historical facts that's interesting, look up the us camel corps on youtube. There's a gentleman by the name of Doug Baum who reenacts that time period. He does camel treks in Egypt and here in America. There us a grave marker in Vicksburg for Old Douglas who was killed by a union sniper during the siege of Vicksburg. He was the mascot for his unit. The Camel Corps was a experiment in resupplying the western outposts.Hi Jolly came to the US as a guide and trainer.Story has it they only knew Arabic commands.I would like for anyone to come forward with any information on Muslim soldiers names who had served in the Confederacy.I also teach living history and Pride myself on sharing rare bits of history. So much is being lost and we need to save as much as possible.Eventually,I'm going to make up a poster representing all the nationalities who served in the Civil War.Please anyone, gogle Old Douglas the camel and you'll learn something new. Also watch the video on the camel corps.
