  • To be fair; "Bernie" did not criticize the individuals who make up the 1%. He assailed the system which is facilitating the accumulation of wealth in a very few hands.... There is a significant difference.

  • Laz, if some of the bottom 99% have the "get up and go" of the 1%, could they not work their way into the 1%, or even better, expand the "1%" class? When will be the time that people quit being jealous of what others have that have worked hard for it and become happy with what they have been provided for not working hard? I know that may come as a shock to some (most?) people, but an even more important question is : when will people be happy with what they have the gumption and the giddyupgo to provide for themselves? Now I am no where close to the top 1% but I am definitely not a 99%er. I am quite happy with the way I provide for myself and family. The way this country and capitalism works is you CAN get ahead with some vision and hard work, as long as you don't fall into the trap of those that say you can only get ahead by the government providing for you. Personally, I find that idea offensive.

BTW lazyrus, did you see that Carl was kind enough to give me a post also? I am appreciative and proud. Thanks, Carl.

  • As one who is far from a scholar in usage of the English language, I do consider myself a serious student of the language. Being so, I am forever amazed that there are those few in the universe centered on the Times-Gazette blogs that have appointed themselves the only ones capable of parsing the verbiage of their heros so that we minions can understand it.

  • Carl, you are not one of the minions, no mater what you think. And tho you may be a "hero" of mine, I have not "appointed themselves the only ones capable of parsing the verbiage of their heros"so that we minions can understand it." I would suspect that most people who have a working understanding of the American (English) language have somewhat of an idea of what you are saying. But on the higher level of actually understanding what words really mean I invite you to say exactly what you mean. No matter how you may disavow the peons that happen to post to your blogs, some of them may just happen to say something that is worth listening to.

  • Fair share....my statement was not directed at you.

  • Thank you Carl. I, for one, do consider you a scholar of the usage of the English language. And my apologies for anything offensive I might have said.

  • With all due respect, Carl. "Bernie" only used the words "one percent" twice in his speech. The first "...we continue the fight to create a government which represents all of us, and not just the one percent ..." in my mind is addressing the system, not attacking the members of the "one percent." In the second; "...we must fix an economy in America that is rigged and that sends almost all new wealth and income to the top one percent." is certainly addressing the system.

The definition of "assail" is 1. to attack vigorously or violently; assault. 2. to attack with arguments, criticism, ridicule, abuse, etc.: to assail one's opponent with slander.... He mentioned the "one percent" exactly twice, and neither time said anything critical of the "one percenters" themselves. I do not see that as exactly an assault, nor do i see anything that would make his endorsement incongruous.

You can find the transcript here, if you would like to point out something that I missed: http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/presidential-campaign/287370-transcript-be...

  • BTW Fare Share; I am sorry that i was away on business when you got your own personal post. Carl doesn't seem to have really put his heart into it, but at least you had BM wanting to meet you after school. Congratulations, now we have both made it big.

  • Thanks lazarus. Maybe Carl just likes me better because I'm less annoying. 😃

  • I rest my case. Some think I am incapable of finding Bernie's speech transcript. In fact I heard the entire speech and read the transcript twice, but I guess I do not have the ability to interpret all the big words.

  • How is the system rigged to send "almost all new wealth and income to the top one percent".

Maybe if I could figure that out I could channel a little more so we can afford to have the semi-feral cat colony fixed, fed and doctored adequately.

Then we could..... well. never mind. I just want to know how to "rig" a little more this way.

  • The system is not rigged to send "almost all new wealth and income to the top one percent". That is just a political talking point. The system is "rigged " to send the new wealth and income to the producers of it. People commonly and mistakenly think of the economy as a pie --if you take some of it then there is less for others. It really works more like a big pot of stew with lots of people adding to and taking out. But with the government sticking their dirty little hands in the pot, you could say it is now rigged to send the wealth to the bottom 30-40%.

  • Speaking of Bernie and the 99%ers , I wonder if they are headed back to Central Park for another protest after the convention?

-- Posted by fair share on Wed, Jul 27, 2016, at 9:36 AM
  • You rested your case, Carl? You have not yet made it. Please point out the place in the speech where "Bernie" assails the one percenters, and not the system. Just one place.... And don't worry, I can understand all the words.

-- Posted by lazarus on Wed, Jul 27, 2016, at 5:58 PM
  • Um, lazyrus, I think maybe you are Carl's case. There you go again.

-- Posted by fair share on Wed, Jul 27, 2016, at 6:51 PM
  • I don't know, Fare. I have assiduously stuck to the topic (one of Carl's pet peeves) which is his assertion that "Bernie" attacked the one percent, and then pushed a one percenter for the Democratic Nomination.... All I have asked is for him to pull out even one sentence that attacks the one percenters themselves. How can he rest his case before he presents any evidence?

-- Posted by lazarus on Wed, Jul 27, 2016, at 9:24 PM
  • I think his case is about the few in the universe centered on the T-G blogs etc etc etc . Maybe a little off topic, but when you think about it on a higher level, it still is about the 1 %ers . Just a different kind of 1 %er. Sounds like maybe you have another one about you! Congrats.
