  • Talent, then the money this talent generates.

  • Steve, in the case of a police department that has an opening for a Sargent position for instance. The largely determining factor is results of a written exam. Due to Affirmative Action, any minority applicants will be awarded extra points on the exam. This often means a promotion goes to one who is less qualified ie, less talented. As I mentioned, this Program is designed to insure the group in question reflects the makeup of the population at large. Most sports teams obviously do not look like the population at large. How is it that one example here is highly desirable and one is, ho hum, no problem?

  • Affirmative action is just a softer form of racism.

It essentially says "hey no one expects you to be able to succeed, being black and all, so here's this handout to make up for your racial deficiency"

  • Affirmative action is to insure that women and minorities have as equal a opportunity as whites in education, jobs and etc not just blacks. If there was no discrimination there would be no need for it but Some even refuse to believe it exist. It is a policy to help members of a disadvantaged group who currently suffer or historically have suffered from discrimination within a culture, such as oppression or slavery.Given the right to equal opportunity helps a person succeed.A good example was when black schools were given old worn outdated textbooks, they would not do as well on a test as the ones with the updated books.

  • Which group hasn't suffered at the hands of another in the past?

  • When you say white, do you mean Slavic, Irish, Italian, Greek, Jew, Germanic, Scandinavian or do they all look alike to you?

EVERY group of people on the planet have been done wrong by some other group at some time in history.

The telling difference is who holds onto those grievances like they were money.

Over 1/3 of the world population of jews were exterminated as vermin within living memory of some people, yet where is the massive jewish poverty, crime, and illegitimacy?

Are there any white supremacist groups that don't also hate jews?

What's the difference? Booker T Washinton had a great explanation long ago.

  • LBR.......Thanks for your definition and inane and specious support for Affirmative Action. Your ancient arguments for such a program is trite and deceptive. Please explain how a program that uses discrimination to cure discrimination is desirable and proper.

  • I am new to Shelbyville, and as I continue to make my way around town, I see so much redlining, when it comes to districting and especially those in power. For a county to have a large population of ethnic groups, there is no one in power that represents them. I continue to see social-economic hardship in this county. Discrimination is real unless you have actually endured it, it is not much you can say. As for handouts, no one is looking for handouts just a fair share to succeed in life. It's easy to say some of the things I hear when the dominate race has always had a head start. History has proven that time and time again. In Shelbyville there is discrimination and it is blatant. Unless we deal with and talk about the issues that separate us as people we will never get past the issues I see. I think its time for Shelbyville to address issues that continue to be swept under the rug. We need to represent all people, but instead, those that are in power and position do not speak for all the citizens of this county. The time has come when all citizens need to get to know their neighbors and those in their districts, not just when election time comes but now. You will find out that the blood still runs red and we all have a state in the future of this county.

  • What blatant discrimination have you witnessed in Shelbyville specifically?

What, specifically, would you need to see in able for ethnic groups to "be represented"?
