Tomorrow night, Tuesday Dec 12th, is the meeting of the County Commission which will, among other issues, take-up the question of whether a temporary "care taker" Senator will be seated for Jim Tracy's former seat. Such an action if approved will only have the effect of massaging some political wannabe's ego and will result in no benefit to the Counties in the district. Such an appointment will result in the tax expenditure of several thousand dollars in per diem and salary for no benefit.
For those who are familiar with the legislative process know there are 33 state senators and only 5 are Democrats, ergo no close votes and one Republican vote is relatively insignificant. For those who think bill introductions is a major reason for such an appointment, Pat Marsh can find a Senate sponsor for any desirable legislation. If one follows the process, one knows Tracy did not always sponsor Pat Marsh's bills.
Another salient point, most bills with any "meat" are on the floor near the end of the Session. Such bills will include the budget and any controversial bills. Such bills are usually passed about 15 seconds before they turn out the lights and leave for home. The person appointed will not be a Senator at this time.
I hope people will contact their Commissioners and urge them to not waste the money for no benefit by appointing a care-taker so we might wait until the special election called by the Governor to elect a Senator to complete Tracy's term.
