Roughing it

My mother's idea of roughing it was a motel room that didn't have sub-zero air conditioning. I like to think I'm a hardier soul than that, but the older I get, the more I find myself suffering RV envy at the campground.

My husband and our youngest son try to camp out two or three weekends a month when the weather is right. The two oldest can't be bothered -- they have separation anxiety. I'm not sure what they're most afraid of being separated from -- their girlfriends, their XBox or their e-mail.

We aren't X-treme campers by any means. I don't like to cook on my electric range at home -- what makes you think I'm going to char bacon and torch marshmallows over an open flame?

No, we're spoiled. The campground we usually visit has a diner, a pool, a pool table and even a television in the clubhouse. The only time we're really "camping" is at night, when we retire to our tent and our queen-size air mattress. We don't even have real sleeping bags.

Even so, by morning, when the air has escaped the mattress and the heat has fled the tent, I feel as though I'm stranded in the freezing, cruel mountains with the Donner party. I ache in places I shouldn't be aching for at least another decade and I'm hungry enough to gnaw through one of those compressed granola-cement bars, even if it means chipping another tooth.

I stagger out of the tent, pine needles clinging to my sweatsuit like orphaned children, and my hair showing evidence of tornadic activity.

My neighbors -- in the RV -- step out, showered, shaved, fed and neat. I swear, if they had satin smoking jackets and ascots, they'd be wearing them, nibbling on kippers as they sit on the deck of their RV, watching the little people stagger blindly to the bathhouse.

"That's not real camping," my father would have snorted. Apparently, it only counts as "real" camping if bloodshed is involved -- blood from driving in tent stakes, cutting your own firewood, or accidentally punching your husband in the nose as you both try to navigate a tiny tent in the dark.

I have to disagree. It is camping. It's just luxury camping. You still wake to bird song and the sleepy greetings of you fellow campers -- if you can hear them over the sultry purr of your RV's sub-zero air conditioning.

I know what you mean about the air mattresses.

I'm sure I'd have to visit a chiropractor (sp?)if I had to sleep on the hard ground in an "old-fashioned" sleeping bag.

I LOVE to stay awake until about 2 am or after if possible to see the "varmits" come out of the woods.

Mary,

Camping in the outdoors has been a part of my life since boyhood. I have found that Tennessee has some of the greatest places on earth to enjoy this lifestyle.

I will admit that as I get older, an RV is starting to look good to me as well. The only downside is dragging the darn thing all over the state and having to plan a camping trip..It is much better with today's compact and light camping gear to keep it in the trunk and go on the spur of the moment.

Rebel rose, try the state parks in this state, many of which are near middle Tennessee. Most have showers with hot water and indoor plumbing as well, many have restaurants on or near the camp sites..I'm with Mary on the cooking part, Too much trouble....

Keep up the great stories Mary,

My wife and I have just got on the same work schedules, and are trying to find places where you can camp and fish. Normandy always seems to be to crowded, although they do have a nice setup. We are going to Bass Pro this weekend to buy new camping & fishing gear.

Wow sounds like a nice camp ground...were is that one at...we love to go camping....we only have a tent and we always cook-out...We usually go to the campground in Normandy...We love it..we try to go once a month...my son and I go early on friday and sit up everything and then we go back and get Dad after he has got off of work...that way he does not have to work all day then go set up the camp site..Plus I do not feel so bad on Sunday when we have to pack up everything and I do not do as much...Our son is 17 and he loves his T.V. and Games and friends too ...But he loves getting away for a week-end with us...We always have a great time and my husband loves doing all the cooking while we are camping....That includes coffee and bacon and eggs and toast from the grill in the morning....I always make many friends also...I just love it....
