Scott who?

Wonder of wonder -- miracles of miracles. My college student son, Scott, sent me an email!

The first few weeks he was in Madison, not working, not taking classes and bereft of television, computers and video games, he called me every night. When work started, he called every other night.

Whe classes started, I considered sending out a Special Forces team to see if he still walked the land of the living.

"How is Scott doing?" friends would ask.

"Either he's dead or he's thriving," I said. "And he must not need money, because he never calls."

He had an email address, but it was one he created when he was about 13 and is some crazy dragon-based name with a series of numbers that my poor old gray head can't retain.

But today -- I got an email from him!

"This is my new, professional email," he said.

Oooh-la-la!

I'm thrilled! Not only is it an easy-to-remember email address, I now have it in my system so that if I do forget it, I just have to scroll down through my old mail. But even better, I now have a way to forward him all those joke emails everyone else fowards to me. I'm no longer the last link in the chain!

And one more thing -- he sent this to my work email, which means he has to have been visiting the Times-Gazette website. Could this mean ... maybe he misses me a little bit, too?

I can relate to your situation. I wish I had something comforting to write, but about all I can come up with, is that the time will eventually pass. I bet he does miss home, but not quite as much as home misses him. Working and school probably keep him pretty busy now.

You know the old expression -- be careful what you wish for? He actually called last night ... because his faithful old Ford F-10 finally bit the dust. So I got to make a night run to take him my car while his is getting fixed and got to take him brownies and winter clothes.

The irony is -- he was in class, so I didn't even get to see him!

I am sure he will appreciate the brownies. The warm clothes also. I wish you had the opportunity to see him though. Am I remembering correctly that he has younger brothers? When my oldest son went to collage last year it took until the New Year for us all to get adjusted. He was kind enough to goof off last year and lose his scholarships, so he is back home this year trying to get his GPA up. I would never tell him this, but I was not quite as disappointed with this as I claimed to be. I do not think anyone in the house (including him) was ready for him to be gone.
