Staycation, daycation, vacation

Where do you go for a one- or two-day mini-vacation? Camping at Bedford Lake? The tour and Jack Daniel's? let me know some good spots to visit within and hour of Shelbyville.

If you expand it to 1.5 or 2 hours, I can name a couple of great places,

Lake Guntersville, AL--with sunset dinner overlooking the lake and a 20 mile trip to unclaimed baggage in Scottsboro, AL

Chattanooga--has the new historic Delta Queen docked as a hotel. http://www.deltaqueenhotel.com/

For the one hour trip:

Huntsville, AL--space center, shopping and dinner

Wyndham Nashville Resort on McGavock Pike across from Opryland hotel.

Monteagle--Flea market and overnight stay

We can't afford to do anything this year...so after the heavy rains in May, I noticed several pictures posted from viewers on the TG website of local waterfalls. (Machine Falls)...that turned into a research project (for me.) After finding out there are over 600 waterfalls in the state, we decided to start checking them out. In the month since we started, we've seen 14 or so from Machine Falls, Fall Creek Falls and on up to Fiery Gizzard. We've had a blast hiking as a family and may have never found these "treasures" in our backyard, had we not had to "cut back"! And all it's cost us was some gas money and a cooler full of sammies and drinks! And actually, we did recoup some money because I won 2nd place for one of my waterfall pictures in a local contest!

I love history, so any of the historic sites within the area. Look out Mountain in Chattanooga has a historic battle field, plus Ruby Falls, and a few roadside picnic areas.

I keep meaning to get back to Huntsville and see the expansion of the Space and Rocket Center. I guess that's a little more than an hour's drive, but not much.

In case you don't know, the Saturn V rocket which has always laid on its side next to the museum was beginning to suffer weather damage. So they built a shelter to enclose it and provide additional museum space. (The rocket standing up next to the museum is not a Saturn V -- I think it's a Saturn 1B, although I could be remembering that wrong).

Here are some places that I have enjoyed that are close by:

Cumberland Caverns - great experience no matter your level or age

Rock Island State Park - great place to go to get away from crowds since it is less known but has beautiful waterfalls and places to walk and see.

Fall Creek Falls State Park -- Another great park that is better known with lots to do and see.

Hermitage - Historical fun

Centennial Park (Nashville) - The Parthenon is a fun visit.

Adventure Science Museum (Cumberland)

Lake Winnepesaukah is a good value and it's just in Chattanooga.You can get the unlimited ride pass for 21.00 and on Fridays is two for one coke day...bring a coke can and buy one unlimited ride ticket and get one free..gate admission is just 5.00. They have concerts and shows. They have a large picnic areas so you can pack a picnic and not have to worry about purchasing park food.
