Shear madness

Posted Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at 11:01 AM

There have been several stories in the news recently about guys being told they had to cut their hair. One was a driver who works for a FedEx ground delivery contractor. The contractor has told him to cut the hair, put it in a ponytail or under a cap. The driver, who is growing the hair out for Locks of Love, says it isn't long enough for a ponytail yet, or to go under his hat. The other long-hair being told he has to trim his locks is a 4-year-old in Texas.

I have a real problem with this, and not just because two of my three boys have long hair. (The youngest one we can still catch and force into the barber's chair!) What I want to know is -- are the women who drive for the FedEx contractor obligated to follow the same rules? Are the little girls in that boy's class given the same orders? Fair is fair, people.

Not all guys look good with long hair. My middle son does. He's planning on cutting it off right after he graduates high school in May and donating it to Locks of Love, and I dread it because he does look good with long hair. My oldest son does not, and I think one reason he rarely comes home to sleep over is because he's afraid I'm going to sneak up on him in the night with his dad's barber's shears.

But then again, some women look better in long hair than others. If my hair can be coaxed to grow past my chin, it gets thin and wispy and bedraggled. I'd give anything for Kirstie Alley's long, thick hair, but short of a wig, it isn't going to happen.

Is it a cultural thing or a gender thing? I know there's also hygiene to be considered -- Ben braids his hair back tightly before clocking in at McDonald's if he's going to be cooking or serving food-- but some of the girls who work there with long hair don't. As far as culture, we've come a long way from the days when you had either a buzz cut or hippie hair and little in between. Long hair on men is far more common and I thought -- until I saw these news items -- far more accepted.

What are your thoughts?

As long as the hair is kept clean and brushed neat, I don't see a problem. I'm a Christian, and the pictures I see depicting men in the Bible all have men with shoulder length or longer hair. I'll leave my opinions there, I've already been on one soapbox about people judging people based solely on one's appearance. I enjoy your stories and blogs, so I really don't want to get that started again. :D

Hair is a personal preference. I understand having to adhere to rules of the job but past that it's no ones business if a man (or woman) chooses long hair. I personally like long hair on men. My boys always had long hair as teenagers as did most of their friends. Now that they are grown and in the work force, it is short. One of our deacons at church has long hair and he always looks very nice although I have heard people make negative comments about it. Like the hair affects his ability to serve our church body in any way.....

When I was a student at Oral Roberts University, men could not have beards (they've since loosened up on that) and our hair could not be, if I recall correctly, any lower than the top of our collars. Most students lived on-campus, and the resident advisor would do a "hair check" each month before issuing you your meal ticket (a rather effective enforcement mechanism!).

Anyway, in one of the buildings at ORU there was a series of 12 individual portraits of Jesus' disciples, which had supposedly been donated to the university. This was funny because -- in complete rejection of historical accuracy -- 11 of the portrayed disciples were clean-shaven.

Guess which one had a beard? That's right. Judas Iscariot.

The portraits were, needless to say, a subject of much derision among the student body.

I used to work for Averitt Express. Their polocies on hair are even tighter than Fed-Ex. The same is true for UPS. Men cannot have hair over the ears or the collar. Facial hair is restricted to a neatly trimmed mustache. It is all about the image the company wants to present to the customer. These companies, right or wrong, believe that their image is tarnished by long hair, beards and tattoos.

These polocies are clearly stated up front in the first interview, leaving up to the applicant to decide if he or she wants to cover their tattoo, cut their hair or shave their beard.

Yes,women are allowed to have long hair and they are allowed to wear it loose.

As long as it is clean i don't care what it looks like, it can be down to their butt as long as their pants are up to the top of their butt. Long hair is fine, pants around your knees is not.

The mother of the 4-year old in Texas has solved the hair problem to the school's and her son's satisfaction. He attends school now with his hair french braided and the braids pinned up at the nape of his neck.

The school claimed that his long hair was a distraction to learning. Personally, I think that a little boy in french braids is a bigger distraction. But, that is just my opinion.

I was a teen in the early 70's and my hair was of course very long. I do remember that a very brave young lady that sat behind me in biology class would often put me to sleep brushing my hair, so I guess it was a distraction to the both of us. However the military saw to it that my hair was properly trimmed while in their employ. I let grow to shoulder length again in my mid thirties, kind of an experiment for my wife at that time. (I had to shave it all off as the result of Johnny Majors opting to tie Colorado)I've kept it trimmed above my ears since then and age has taken care of the rest. Now, to quote the bible...It does say in 1st Corinthians 11:14-15 "Doth not even nature itself teach you that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? (15) But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.lol
