iPod Essentials: Part Two
I love the Sex Pistols. If you've ever seen me, it's easy to tell either from my shirts, or my watch, or my bag, or my wristbands that i'm flying the Sex Pistols flag proudly. Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook, and Sid Vicious make up the foursome that I would listen to over anyone else. Not beside of their outstanding musical ability-because i'll admit, they aren't that talented-but because of their energy and their raw edge. The Sex Pistols ignited the punk revolution in the UK, and with songs like "God Save the Queen" and "Anarchy in the UK" they waged war on an entire country without that ambition. The Sex Pistols poured freedom and rebellion into their songs, and the outcome is the raw spirit oozing from tracks like "The Great Rock and Roll Swindle" and "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone." In 1996 the Sex Pistols(minus Vicious) released a new live albums Filthy Lucre Live with a harder edge and a total punk feel talking about issues like abortion and submission. The new live album featured many of their older singles but I believe the Sex Pistols were in their prime from 75-79 with the original four.
A modern pop/rock mainstream band that I absolutely adore- Maroon 5. The vocals of Adam Levine, especially is their latest album It Won't Be Soon Before Long- display a flawless and beautiful appeal that match perfectly with the rock elements and pop production of the band. It is not uncommon to hear a rocked out guitar solo in the middle of a mostly pop and beat driven song. That's the beauty of Maroon 5, and the one thing that draws me most to their sound. There is usually a sexual undertone to their albums except for the B-Side Collection. The B-Side Collection is a complilation of 7 songs that did not make it onto their secon studio album-It Won't Be Soon Before Long. The B-Side Collection features two of my favorites "Until Your Over Me" and "Figure It Out". This album is more focused on finding and losing love, than sex- at least not in the sense of the their other album with songs like "Kiwi" and "Can't Stop". To me, Maroon 5 is that feel good music, that also is good music.
Among other bands and songs that I consider as "my essentials" include:
Motion City Sountrack-"Perfect Teeth", "Everything is Alright", "Hold On", and "LGFUAD"
Jack's Mannequin- the entire Everything in Transit album
Stevie Ray Vaughan-"The Sky is Crying", "I'm Leavin' You(Commit a Crime)", "Manic Depression", and "Wall of Denial"

Drive By Truckers- "Tornadoes" and "Plastic Flowers on the Highway"
The Beatles- "The Ballad of John and Yoko"
Showbread- "Mouth Like a Magazine_
The Higher- "Insurence"
RENT- "La Vie Boheme" and "Take Me or Leave Me"

I used to enjoy the Sex Pistols myself way back in the day. I have not, and probably will not hear anything newer of theirs though. I fear my teeth would fall out. I also liked the message of their songs more than the actual music or the style of singing.
As far as any impression you believe you may have given, so what? It is imposable to fully express yourself in a few paragraphs. If you think the popstars have no talent, thats okay. Talent is very subjective, and depends a lot on what you are looking for. For example, I prefer lyrics that have some meaning to me. I also prefer books and movies that have some substance, but that does not mean that someone whose preferred entertainment that has no political or social statement is not right for them.
Music appears to have been very important in the recent past to help us define ourselves. It differentiates us from our parents, and in many cases even our peers. I wonder on a personal level if you had any peers that like the same music as you do, or if you are a rebellious person by nature? Another great music list, thanks. I especially liked seeing some of the punk on your list, but hanson?
Wow, you got GREAT taste in music! :)
I would have added my two personal favorites Rush and Rammstein, but that's just me.
memyselfi,
My musical tastes actually have been gained thru "mentors" so to speak. Neal Gordon, Mike Therrien, Mark Perry- people that knew I loved music and gave my new bands to check out. My dad also played a huge role in that raising on bands like Kiss and Aerosmith. Hanson was the first band I ever liked, in the third grade when everybody was listening to the boy bands like Backstreet boys and Nsync, I started listening to Hanson because they played their own instruments-and that was cool.
Ashley,
Let me add a few bands you might want to check out since you seem to have a great sense of taste.
Wrathchild America - Climbin the Walls
KIX - Most of the albums are fun.
Dread Zepplin - Reggee coverband with an elvis impersonator
Lynch Mob - Wicked Sensation and Tangled in the Web
Firefly Soundtrack - The whole thing.
Thanks Evil Monkey, i'll check it out.
I'm familiar with the Lynch Mob.
There are actually two different Lynch Mobs, One is with the Guitarist George Lynch and the other is a rap group or R&B, not sure. I like George's guitar style, if you listen to some of his solo-type work it is very different, from "Tierro Del Fuego" to "Love Power from Mamahead".
George Lynch & his band was great, Dance Of The Dogs was my personal favorite.
I was brought up w/ Motown as a kid but I loved hearing the pop 80's hits when I was abit older and had my own radio. Flock of Seagulls, Wang Chung, Frankie Goes To Hollywood and th rest of the "One Hit Wonders".
I tend to listen to more metal now; Disturbed, 3 Days Grace, Manson, Taproot, Buckcherry, Fuel, 10 Days, Avenged 7 Fold, Sixx AM & Hinder. I do like 3 Doors Down & Nickelback. They are not not metal but do rick from time to time.
Def Leppard, RATT, Van Halen & Van Hagar, Poison, Slaughter, Winger, Danger Danger, Motley Crue, NIN & The Scorpions are some of my favorites.
A lot of the pop stars, Miley, Jordin, Chris Brown make for some good times riding in the car going from place to place.
Sad to say, I do not like The Stones, Zepplin nor The Beatles. I guess I just missed something. I do like Pink Floyd ALOT. Go fig.
For some reason I like Alan Jackson, Clint Black, Keith Urban.
Jimmy Buffett will always be my own personal favorite. Fins Up.
ELO, The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Earth Wind and Fire, The Who, Guns'n'Roses(oh man, who could live without Slash?) Whew, I'm making myself too dizzy to go on. Nice taste!
