Cobb, Brown, Marsh, Who said what?

Posted Wednesday, September 16, 2009, at 11:45 PM

Can anyone confirm whether either of these letters are legitamate?

Dear Pat,

I find it disappointing that you would try to score cheap political points through a press release insinuating that I am refusing to debate you. As you are well aware, leaders in both House caucuses are negotiating the best time, place and format for such a debate of the issues.

I believe it is in the best interest of the citizens of Bedford, Lincoln and Rutherford counties to have all candidates at the debate, including Independent candidate Chris Brown. In your haste, or more likely the state Republican Party's haste, to have a debate on your own terms, you neglected to invite Mr. Brown.

Please refrain from these negative campaign attacks from this point forward. The people of House District 62 deserve civil, honest debate about the importance of good jobs, quality schools and safe communities.

I go to work every day delivering packages throughout the area, and people tell me they are worried about losing their jobs, their homes and the ability to raise their families in safe neighborhoods. I want to represent my friends, neighbors and co-workers in the state Legislature so I can address their concerns.

Making our communities, our state and our country a better place to live and raise a family is the reason I want to serve in the Tennessee General Assembly, as I'm sure it's yours. Let's not resort to the petty bickering that seems to be so commonplace in today's politics. Good luck to you and Mr. Brown in your campaigns, and may the best candidate win.

Sincerely,

Ty Cobb

Candidate for State House District 62.

I found this letter at http://politics.nashvillepost.com/2009/0...

and it was also posted at this site. http://blogs.tennessean.com/politics/200...

The reason I'm wondering if it is legitimate is because the same writer posted the following letter that he claims Marsh authored, but candidate Chris Brown said he never received Marsh's letter by mail, e-mail, or in any other way.

September 14, 2009

Dear Chris Brown,

I appreciate your desire to join me in providing a town hall forum or debate for the voters in District 62. I am disappointed in the Democrat Candidate's response that he does not "have time" for such an event.

You and I have had an opportunity to debate during the primary, and I believe that now that we are only weeks away from the general election, we must have a debate with all three candidates present. Anything else would be a disservice to the voters and not achieve the objective.

I trust that you will join me in challenging Ty Cobb to a Town Hall meeting where we can have a genuine debate. Doing so will allow the voters to have a complete picture and full understanding of what our plans are for the future of this district and the State of Tennessee.

Sincerely,

Pat Marsh, Republican Candidate for TN State House 62

A.C. Kleinheider was my source for these two letters and he is a somewhat recognized political blogger in Nashville http://politics.nashvillepost.com/about/ so I don't see any reason he would lie.

I have contacted both the Cobb and Marsh campaigns through their websites to see if they can advise me.

It does seem kind of ironic that these letters from Cobb and Pat Marsh have not been posted in the paper, but yet end up on the Nashville post where a lot of the readers won't see them. I do know that when I contacted Chris Brown that he knows nothing of this letter from Pat Marsh and has not received anything of the sort, so where are they coming from? Mr. Brown saw Pat Marsh at McDonalds and he never said anything about any letter or if he would be at the AG center on Monday. Who are they coming from? When letters are being found and the people of District 62 knows nothing of them, what is that saying to the people of District 62? That means there is someone trying to start more stuff that we don't need right now while we are trying to find out who we think is the best candidate for the job.

As far as already having a debate, I don't consider what they had was a debate. That was with Mr. Marsh, the other three Republicans and Mr. Brown in a setup Republican forum for the primary. We need to know more as to what is going to happen once they are in there and who it's going to help. We, the people of this District, need to be able to ask what we need to know. We don't need the questions coming from the Parties, but from us, the factory workers, the laborers, the truckers, the real people of this town and this District! We are the ones that it will affect, not the National parties. So, everyone that can be there needs to be at the AG Center on Monday. If the others don't show, at least we'll find out more about what Mr. Chris Brown wants to do to help our District and our state.

I had read the letter that supposedly came from Mr. Cobb. If that is, indeed, the way it came about, why didn't he (or someone in his campaign) comment regarding that in the Times-Gazette article when it came out?

I find it odd that people are on here complaining that Mr. Cobb won't make time for the campaign or for us (the "employers") to hear his ideas and what he can do for this state but nobody in his organization has bothered to comment on this issue in the local paper.

UPDATE

I was contacted by Chris Brown this morning and Mr. Brown informed me that this morning he did receive the letter from Pat Marsh that has been in question and he wanted to quickly clear the air. Brown then commented on the content of the letter saying that it seemed to say that Pat wasn't interested in having a debate unless all three candidates were present because he and Brown had previously debated during the primary. Mr Brown agreed that it would be best if all the candidates were present, but that should not deter Mr. Marsh from a debate with only him. He also desired that the public continue to pressure the candidates to bring about a debate.
