The power bill! Holy Mother of God!Posted Thursday, February 5, 2009, at 2:58 PM
I am a freak for keeping the thermostate around 69 day and 62 night. All i could say was Holy Mother of God, that is bad! Anyone else get a rude surprise?? I called and fussed at TVA, and they of course were very concerned and would adjust my bill right away by taking the president of the companies' bonus away and give it back to the customers.. (not) It's not my fault they had a freaking ash spill. Any thoughts???? Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

Ugh, yeah. My December bill was 136.00, January was 198.00, and the bill I'm paying today is 217.00. I'm fortunate not to have a house payment, but I may have to get a loan just to pay for the electric.
We are paying for the CEO's bonus he got, we have yet to see the charges for TVA's ash spill.
My electric bill went from 145, to $254 to $386!!!!
TVA has now made public electricity unaccessable to many people, that is Against the Federal laws.
This is outragous and there's nothing we can do.
Pay it, get behind on your house payments, have no food, but your warm.
These bills do not reflect that ash spill, that's coming later.
THESE BILLS REFLECT GREED!!!!
Welcome to my world, last month was over 500.00 and this month was 498.00 I did notice the fuel charge went down or it would have been over 500.00 again!
Mine went from $92 in December to $206 in January! Now, it went up to $305 in February!!!! What in the world is going on in this town? I have a fairly small place and I've used right at about the same amount of utilities each month. I don't get it...what a sham!
We heat by gas and wood and our electric bill is still close to $300.
My bill latest bill is in excess of $550 and I've been using my wood-burning fireplace as much as humanly possible for the past few weeks. I honestly wanted to cry when I opened it.
what can we do?? I was just so flabbergasted. I try to keep the thermostate down and wear a sweater, pile on blankets at night. there has got to be something to do...??
are all yal on Duck River or Shelbyville Power?
I'm on Shelbyville Power. So frustrating!
My electric bill has been consistently around $90 for months until December when I received a bill for $143. The January bill went to $188. I heat my home with wood and was expecting my bill to be a little higher because the day is shorter, but my usage is close to the same as any other month. Fees are the culprit. My friend in Cannon County received a bill for January that was only $20 higher than mine and he heats his home with electricity. SERENITY NOW!! :)
I am on Shelbyville Power. I am thinking of powering up the generator. Ha ha...
Maybe Mules?? Or Squirrels on wheels would power the house...
Our highest bill in the last 2 years was $125 until December when we received one for over $300! January is again $300! Kilowatts are primarily the same as last year! I would like someone from Duck River to explain this increase. I haven't heard any announcements or received any notices that they were going to increase their rates. It is totally irresponsible for a public utility to take such actions without informing the public of when and why.
When our whole economy is falling apart and we are losing our jobs, they decide to increase our rates!!!!! AND we thought GAS prices were bad!!
Does anybody else find it EXTREMELY odd (shady) that the viewable bills online at DREMC are no longer available for periods prior to December? I wonder if there's a legitimate reason for them pulling these bills from their site. Maybe someone from Duck River can explain this. I would LOVE to hear the reason for this.
Nov $145, Dec $276, Jan $286.
Freakin' ridiculous.
I'm on Duck River and my Jan bill was $410.00 I hate to see this months. I've been unplugging everything at night( TV, microwave, Coffee pot, computer) They told me 40% of a bill is things that can be unpluged when not using them because your coffee pot, mirowave, TV, DVD player have clocks so they are using ele. even when you aren't using them. I don't think it's going to reduce my bill by much, but I'm trying.
DianaTn,
I have Duck River Electric.
I'm on Shelbyville Power.
Well at least now it doesn't look like these charges are just Duck River as many of us thought last month. Of course that doesn't make me feel any better about the high bills.
i just went and bought some power strips i can power off when not in use. We'll see.
God i am so disgusted at these bills.
My bill was $171 in November...$272!! in December and now its $277 for January. I'm never at home, and my thermostat is set at 68 all the time!!! I've have been so ill about this....and I've used less than December hoping it would go down!!!
Oh, and I have EVERYTHING on power strips!!! I have for months!! Does no good
We are on Duck River.......$188 in November, $362 in December, $538 in January and I just opened this months bill and it is $505! We have turned back the termostat, closed off part of the house (unused bedroom), we are all running around turning off lights, making sure dishwasher and laundry are full loads, wearing more clothes instead of everyone sitting around in shorts and t's..........I am tired of working so hard for our money and then so many who are as able as we are to work gets welfare or CEO's get million dollar bonus's all thanks to added fees and my tax dollars.............when will it be the little guys time to breath and enjoy their money a little?
I have gas heat and mine went from $149 to $317
I have not seen by Jan. bill yet, but my last one was $274 and I was not hardly home that month. This "sudden" increase in our bills is ridiculous.
Check this crap out... Last months bill 375, this months 286.
Here is the kicker, I wasn't home for 10 days of the $375 bill and home everyday for $286 bill. Does any of this make any sense?? Most of the rechargeable batteries is on solar; so this really doesn't make one iota of sense. So we went from $120 to $300 average electric bill for no reason whatsoever.
Is there anyway we can get a solar/wind power coalition together in this county to work on getting some real alternatives? I will lend a hand but I have no way to finance such an endeavor.
Would the local utilities have to buy our surplus power from us?
Even if they didn't,I think it'd be worth doing.
When sunlight's in short supply, wind tends to pick up.
There are even low level systems for creeks, etc.
Anything that could supplement our available power would be good plus it could help run vehicles that use electric power.
The initial expenses might seem high until you start looking at three or four hundred dollar a month utility bills and an amortized cost of $16,000 or less over as much as thirty years.
An alternative energy system might pay for itself in five years with twenty five years of "free" energy.
There are several green advisory groups and government incentive plans that could help with public and private sector use of efficient, frugal and ecologically sound set-ups.
We Could be like Bakersfield and put windmills on Chestnut Ridge :>)
And the way the wind has been blowing lately it might not be a bad idea
Well yes, the power companies would buy it at a discount rate, but they decide on that rate. Fair eh?
Thing is, we can do is sell it to neighboring counties instead of selling it to power companies. We get more money for it. My idea would be to use it as an incentive to bring in companies to create more jobs. In return, charge them less for power. At this time, there is no real motivation to start a company here.
they have wind power in Texas where my mom lives, where i moved from. From what i understand the AF base is powered by the wind mills.
They were really cool looking flying over them.
Then again Texas (west) always has a wind blowing.
What about the power company do they have a program where you pay so much a month whether or not you use it.?? like a base rate.
My mom has that in texas, flat rate bill.
I really don't know much about the flat rate bill program or if there is one here. It doesn't matter, as it is probably still a rip-off.
This only a symptom of a much larger problem. But, but but, look at the bright side of this. Because we are paying a rediculous amount, the select few can still live their exorbitant, extravagant life styles, the oval office can be maintained at hot house status, the state can build an underground ballroom and all kinds of nice goodies for the elite of our country. All because of WE THE PEOPLE. But you still get to vote and just maybe the election won't be stolen from you(example Minnesota senate race). Also, if you do figure someway to reduce your electrical usage, they will again jack up the rates. After all privileged peoples right to remain privileded must and I say again, must be maintained. Until we wake up and take back our country from our American royals, I got news for ya. It ain't getting any better. So next time you have the chance people -- VOTE. Right now it's about our only hope. Elect somebody who cares for America. And in closing, don't forget to pay your taxes, so our Wasington elite won't have to.
I too am disgusted with the bills over the past few months but everyone seems to blame the local companies. TVA made the increase not our companies and these employees have to pay high bills just like we do. The power strips have to be unplugged to stop using power so if you leave them plugged in then it is not going to work. Just have some respect for the people who work at these companies they are going through the same thing we are.
November 189,December 382,January 431 BULL*&^%!!
