Ralph the squirrel goes free..Posted Monday, December 14, 2009, at 4:14 PM
Very spoilt squirrel
For those of you following Ralph the Squirrel, she is doing well. She started in November to stay outside more and more. She would come in , in the evenings when I went out to the tree and then one day... she just did not want to come in. Sniff. She had found some of her litter mates. While I was sad that Ralph chose to live outdoors permanently I was also filled with gratitude because I got to help one of God's special creatures go back into the wild where she belonged. I learned a lot from that squirrel she was funny and energetic and always mischievous. They are very social and such clowns. They love to play and I would play peek a boo with her often when she would get on the laundry hanging over the washer. I learned what to feed them and what not to feed them, what she really liked and the fact that they are skittish for a reason. Ralph would always "taste" my finger before she jumped on my hand and I tested this theory out with my husbands hand over mine, yep she bite the crap out of him and then me unto she figured out which hand was mine. Squirrels bite hard and can do some damage too. If you acted like you were afraid, then she got afraid and would bite. It got to the point where only I could handle her and she would be aggressive with anyone else.. which was not good, and got bloody. Ralph is living in the back yard, in a large ivy covered tree with two other squirrels her size. How do I know it is Ralph? The others run, she does not and will let me get quite close until the others nervously chatter he away. Saturday, I was worried about her... it was 14 degrees that night and I thought, "how do these little squirrels stay warm in this weather?" The dog barked and I thought someone was at the back door, I opened the door and it was the squirrel wanting something to eat. I had forgotten to lay out some sweet potatoes and other goodies on her former hutch we hung outside. Guess she still rules to roost. Good to see ya Ralph, thanks for stopping by. A warming blog Lesa. We felt the same when our Blue Jay chose to flock with his buddies.
Is that a collar on her in the top picture?
yes it is a little stretchy bracelet that just slips off. She has since shed it.. probobly a litter mate chewed it off. I miss her but I know she is happy.
Way too cute!
