TAX COMPLAINTS ANYONE?Posted Thursday, February 5, 2009, at 1:41 PM
Does anyone on here have any Tax complaints so far this year? Any problems with filing their income taxes? My filing went smoothly, thanks to my great neighbor Chrisy. I was just curious.

I have used Complete Tax on-line for the past three years. This year it saved me around $300 by catching something I left out. Now if only the refund will show up.
No complaints here. I'm with sameoldstory, just waiting for it to show up.
I will process mine this weekend. Filing electronically for the last several years has been smooth.
Argh still trying to get mine together......
No problems with TurboTax either
I heard that if you bought a house between April 1st and I think August 31st, you could get an additional $7,500 rebate on 2008 tax returns. I checked with an accountant and this is true. When was this announced to the public? I have a friend who closed on their house on March 28th. So quess what they didn't get the additional $7,500. Two days later on closing and they would have gotten the "bonus". You know if the government would have announced this I am sure my friend would have waited 2 days to close. And why just during those dates?
The $7,500 bonus has to be paid back over 15 years. $500 will be deducted each year from future tax refunds. So it's actually a interest free loan.
Next year, I might try to file myself. It sounds pretty smooth.
Check your news updates on a more reliable source than here. They are changing these laws everyday.
Kudos to Kenneth Parker who wrote a blog about it several months ago!! That's how we found out.
I went to irs.gov to do the free file thing. Last year I did this and used Turbo Tax. This year when I started Turbo Tax, it wasn't recognizing my two daughters as dependants or recognizing them as eligible for the child tax credit/earned income credit. So it was telling me I was going to owe. I have always used Turbo Tax with no problem...until now.
Out of curiosity (sp) I loaded up Tax Cut. This program did exactly what I expected and recognized it all...luckily...so I am now getting a return! Thank God...I need it to pay the electric bill! LOL
So...in my opinion...try to figure your taxes on paper...and then on more than one program if you can. You never know what you might find!
Yes there is a good tax credit for buying a new home in this years taxes if you are a first time buyer...But I think the deadline on this is July 2009 of course if you don't buy until 09 your tax credit will not be good until you file your 09 taxes. I do not know if it has passed or not but Obama has been trying to get that tax credit changed to $15,000 and not only for first time buyers but for any buyer. Which I am hoping it will give the housing market a big boost.
I have always gone to Fax Tax. This year the Womack's are not there. I noticed this right as i walked in, but didn't think much of it. They entered my name in the computer and all my info. popped up from years prior. They changed my numbers on my w-2, told me what I was going to receive as a refund, printed out my papers and told me to return in two weeks for my check. I always received a copy of my papers and I always paid as I left. This time, she told me to pick up my copies when I picked up my check and she walked away (she did not want me to see my true refund). I figured, that is when I would pay, or they took it out of my refund. (it's usually $60.00) It bugged me from the get go, so as soon as I got my check, I looked for their charges...$287.00 Just to Prepare my taxes! Then there was a $39.00 charge for document fee and $40.00 e-file fee. In all, they charged me $366.00 to do my taxes with 1 w-2.
Mr. Sparks (I guess he's the new owner) wrote me a check for $183.00 & told me NOT to tell my friends. So, if anyone gets their taxes done at Fax Tax..find out up front how much they charge! They tell you what you're getting back on your refund, after they take their huge fee! I was reimbursed $183.00, but some people may not know to look and see how much they are charging you! They will not tell you!! Turbo Tax...here I come!
You can do one of many Free Files on the internet, in most cases, even if you don't qualify for Free File the charge isn't but about 15.00 and you still get your money directly deposited into your account in about 2 weeks. Turbo Tax walks you through step by step..very easy to do even if you use deductions instead of the standard.
Dianatn . . . actually Senator Johnny Isakson, a Republican from Georgia, is the driving force behind both the $7,500 and $15,000 tax credits and not Obama.
:-)

Turns out the stimulus check we received last year was basically a loan also. It will have a large negative effect on the return you receive this year as well.
I have heard NUMEROUS complaints on them STRIVING2SUR5, you would not even believe!! People have told me that they do not have proper certifications for filing people's taxes. I wonder if this is fraud???
Mike
I called the IRS and that Stimulus Check is free money and does not have any thing to do with your return.
Ohhh, but they lied. You have to report the amount of stimulus money from last year on this return and IT WILL have direct effect on your return. How do I know this? My wife incorrectly told them we received 900 dollars less than we got because she was unable to get in contact with me. They completed it with the information she provided. I was able to return her call while she was still with the preparer and informed her of the correction. This correction had a negative 600 dollar effect on our return when re-calculated!
One other note, our tax person informed her that if we had not made the correction, IRS would of held our return, so obviously they cross-check the information to make sure everyone is reporting the correct amount.
Mike
The only way the stimulus is affecting your taxes is if you didn't get the full amount. They are giving you the balance of what you didn't receive last year. So when you wife told them you didn't receive the full amount you were entitled to it added the balance of your stimulus in..when the amount was corrected it naturally deducted the stimulus you have already received.
Not a loan..not added into your income but many people did not get the full amount last year. they are getting it this year.
Okay, if that is so, why would the amount she initially did not report, not match the corrected return? I wasn't there when it was prepared, so I obviously have no knowledge of how this is done.
Possibly my wife was mixed up. Wouldn't be the first time...;^)
Mike,
The money is free. If she told them that you received 900 less than you did, they were going to give you that extra money to make up for what you didn't get on your stimulus check. Once you corrected them, then the irs knows you received the money already on the stimulus, therefore they won't put that on your tax return. It has nothing to do with the income tax that you paid in, or what you should get back based on your income. Get it straight.
A family member of mine went to Fax Tax just as they have every year. Like, many others they thought nothing of the new ownership. They have been waiting weeks for their return which was supposed to be days, and they still haven't received a copy of their return and way too much in fees!!!! I've never heard of such a thing!!!
Mike Molder, I believe you are correct also. We noticed the exact same thing on our tax return this year also. We went to Fax Tax, after everything was put in she asked what our stimilus amount was last year, and we were exactly that amount shorter on the return when it was finished. I questioned her about it, and she told us the same lie, that it does not take out for the stimilus but the IRS does require it to be put on file or it will not go through. I remember a while back when I got a stimilus, it was deducted from my taxes at the end of the year too. The stimilus is nothing more than an advance on your taxes. And I imagine the ones that have to pay in are probably paying in extra to repay what they got for the stimilus.
The problem you are having lays with using Fax Tax No one's taxes I have prepared this year has had to pay back the stimulus payment.

I have always done my taxes myself until I married my current wife. Because she is self-employed, I just allowed her to get our taxes done where she had always done her own taxes. (ironically it is Fax Tax). They are now under new ownership as stated above. It had always cost us 40 dollars in the past, but she wrote a check for 139 this year. I will likely shop around a bit next year.
Someone at work here went through Fax Tax also and they were being charged a ridiculous fee and they argued the point and the place was actually negotiating different fee charges when they would complain and offer a lower fee . . . what kind of place does that and they also did not receive the refund they were expecting. They also told them that you could not file taxes online anymore. She came to me and asked me about all of this since I file my own taxes and have some experience.
What kind of business are they running? I just though it was the person I was talking to but it seems like a trend with this place. Better Business Bureau might need to get involved on this and people need to file a report. I would have someone else look at your return and check what they did and verify the information.
I just checked Fax Tax on the Better Business Bureau website and their BBB Accreditation expired on 11/25/2008.
That is probably not a good sign.
turbo tax has an amazing step by step program for the self employed and even showed us a few things this year we did not think to deduct. We ended up getting back rather than paying in. Also reporting the stimulus payment, we found we get an additional $300.00 this year for a child we did not claim last year. Since filing status changed, we will receive the additional money. The new property tax deduction was a big help also for those who do not itemize!
You can get your tax return prepared free at the Senior Citizens Center if you are either over 50 years of age or have less than $50,000 of income. They also E-file the tax return so people can get their refunds within two weeks or so.
Regarding the stimulus rebate, it is not taxable nor do you have to pay it back. You do have to indicate how much rebate was received in case any additional amount may be claimed. You do not have to pay back any of the stimulus rebate that was received last year.
I will definately do my taxes myself next year! I hate confrontation, but I have never been as mad as I was at Fax Tax. There needs to be something done, but I don't know what to do. It is out and out stealing! He tried to justify charging me $287.00 because there were people last year that didn't pay to get their taxes done, so he was trying to recoupe some of that money this year. Can you believe that. I lost it! and of course I was the bad person then. I was just totally unreasonable. I told him he hasn't seen unreasonable yet. He gave me $183.00 back and I left before I was arrested. I just hate the thought of other the people he is taking advantage of. I have sat in the parking lot, trying to warn people going in, to make sure they find out how much they are being charged, but I've had to leave before anyone showed up. I was going to picket, but someone said I would need a permit. I think they were joking, but I wouldn't doubt it.
you can't go on their property with a sign but you can sure stand on the Public Sidewalk in front of the place.
We filed using Turbo Tax with no problems. My parents bought the program, and "shared" it with us. The program allows up to three different people/families to file.
We were using H&R Block, but after them charging us almost $300 last year, we switched back to Turbo Tax.
As far as Fax Tax goes, I have also heard bad things about the business.
I have had nothing but good experiences in the past and this current year with Fax Tax, the man let me know up front my options and how much each of them would cost. If I wanted to be impatient it would have cost me 100's more, but the longer I choose to wait the less the fees would be. I choose to wait my 10 days and thus reduced my fee tremendously. They were all friendly, fast and courteous and even got back MORE than I had ever anticipated. I almost dropped to the floor when I heard what I was getting and had to fight the urge to kiss the man lol.....We can all point out bad and good experiences everywhere we go, but as for me, I think fax tax treated me fairly and I got more than if I would have done it myself.
I don't know what you paid FaxTax stolen but whatever it was could have been money in your pocket instead of theirs. The tax laws are the same if you self file or if you have someone do it for you. You had to know enough to give them the info to file your taxes so you would have had that same info doing it for yourself.
I agree Dianatn . . . I dont see the point in paying someone that much money when I can do it myself plus nowadays if you file online and have it direct deposited, you can get it quickly because I received mine in about seven days after filing.
It is so easy now to file online and many programs make it so easy to understand.
TRUTH! What about the truth? A couple of unhappy people have complained repeatedly on this website aboout FaxTax, but they neglect to tell the whole truth. The truth is that tax preparers are seasonal and need jobs all year long. The Womack's (up in their seventies) were ready to retire. I have tried to manage FaxTax with customers who blame us for the IRS and the Bank, but we have no control over them. The primary person who has complained was refunded money in an effort by FaxTax to go above and beyond what is reasonable to be fair and do good business. They respond with slander, lies and deceit. The truth is that if your taxes are complicated we can save most people thousands of dollars. The CPA firm down the street has employees with my 7 years of college and credentials and they charge $250 per hour. The mechanic that works on your car charges $150 per hour and no one complains; yet I am expected to work for less than minimum wage, I am expected to control the IRS, I am expected to control the fees the banks charge and I am expected to be nice when customers lie to me and treat me like dirt! Some other tax services in town are more expensive and do poorer quality work. We still do basic returns for $9 more than the Womack's charged 5 years ago! How much have our costs gone up in 5 years? The Womack's were great people. They did alot of returns for less than their cost. They lost money doing them. People got accustomed to their charity and expect us to charge less than everyone else. We can't stay in business doing taxes at a loss. Why can't we charge the same as everyone else charges?
Gibberish! I had a basic return and I was not charged $69.00.
I don't know where you get your car fixed but my mechanic don't charge no where close to $150 an hour and if you could fix your car yourself wouldn't you be a fool to pay someone any amount to fix your car?
Get ready for another tax on the middle and lower income folks. The congress just passed the SCAP bill and sent it to the Senate. If signed into law, this will increase the cost of a pack of cigarettes by as much as three dollars a pack. This would cost the average smoker, an additional $1,642 a year in extra cost. This tax is to pay for child health care. Now the irony is that Congress added $200,000,000 that's two hundred million dollars, for smoker cassation in the economic stimulus package. Now if everyone quits smoking, how is congress going to fund children's health care???? I guess they will have to find another vise that crosses all income levels. Maybe they can tax the beef we eat, this will cut down obesity, and the amount of green house gas the cows give off, and fund child health care. This would be a win, win, win for everyone America would be healthier, the environmentalist would be happy, PETA would be beside themselves. But wait if everyone quit eating beef, then how we would fund child health care??? My point is that on the backs of the low to middle income the congress proposes to fund a health care initiative for children, yes we need health care for children. But don't write a bill to enact a tax to fund a project. Then turn right around and through money into a bill for a purpose that would take the funding away form a worthwhile cause. This is the brain trust that is running our country. "I will give tax breaks to the poor", does this sound familiar? The Dems that's right their for the working folks.
I thought this stimulus package was suppose to create jobs not take them away...you figure if they raise the prices to 8 or 9 dollars, people will be forced to quit, they won't be able to afford them. This in turn effects the tobacco growers , the people who work the fields, the thousands of people who work in the factories not the mention store sells and stores who sell nothing more than tobacco products. And don't even get me started on the loss of tax revenue you think the states budgets are hurting now, just wait until people stop using tobacco products. And God help us all Road Rage will be rampant!
So what is the point in spending a trillion dollars to create jobs when you are taking away millions of other jobs?
Dianatn . . . they dont advertise that because it doesnt help sell the stimulus package to the American people. Now Obama is going the route of Bush and using fear to try and push this massive debt creating spending, oh I mean stimulus package.

If you have a customer who you charges $381.94 to, for a 2 week direct deposit into their account from YOUR bank, and they did not get the check until over 3 weeks, and the check came straight from the IRS, do you not feel as if they deserve atleast some sort of REFUND?
The CPA firm down the street has employees with my 7 years of college and credentials and they charge $250 per hour." ---I believe customers did not hire a CPA firm, they hired Fax Tax to file their taxes.
Also, if SO MANY PEOPLE are COMPLAINING about just 1 business, don't you think it is obvious that there is something not right about that particular business???
You seasonal employees, according to the IRS, must show some type of completed certificate that they are qualified to file are taxes. Do your employees that you manage at FAX TAX have that type of certificate?
FAX TAX FAX TAX FAX TAX!!!!!!! I filed with faxtax on the 21st of Jan. I was told it would be a next day check, and the fee would be a little over 500 dollars. I called every day, at least 3 times a day, for thirteen days. No one could seem to tell me why my refund was late. I called the I.R.S., and was informed that on the 23rd of Jan, my refund check had been sent to the bank that faxtax uses. I finally received my check, but it took about 15 days. I was still charged over 400 dollars for them to file my return, which took about 15 minutes to complete. I was in total shock when looked at the receipt and seen that they charged so much. I was only charged about 160 dollars last year for a two week return at faxtax. My point is, i feel like faxtax has taken advantage of a lot of people. I think i will E-file from home next year. I guess the person that owns FAXTAX needed the money more than me. Good luck next year FAXTAX guy.
JonathanW.Sanders I bet every time you called you received different explanations, even from their manager!
I beleive you and another person I know, deserve AT LEAST A 50% REFUND, IF NOT MORE.
Also, you can go to the BBB of Tennessee and file a complaint with them on their website, and also, file a complaint on the IRS's website for Tax Fraud
500 Dollars!!!!! To file your taxes? Gee I am definitely in the wrong business here
I'm thinking the same thing. I was taught how to do taxes in high school and still do my own, just file electronically via turbo tax.
To those of you paying $500 + to have someone do your taxes:
Do you have so many things to claim that you feel that your return would be too confusing to do on your own? Rental property, inheritances and such?
I am just trying to understand why you would pay this much when you can buy a program (heck..even a computer to put the program on) for that cost. The programs out there today go step by step through the return so that you can easily understand it.
Shoot...for this amount of money, I think I will have to get a part time job doing taxes next year!
After reading these blogs I realize that most of the people complaining are just like all the rest of us right now... broke and need some money... as far as the stimulus goes... u are not penalized in any way for the credit u received in 08... tax software for this year simply calculates your refund as if u never received the stimulus package... then when u complete wkst. 5 of form 1040 it simply verifies that u actually received it & the government doesn't need to send that money to u again... it doesn't TAKE MONEY AWAY... because it wasn't there to begin with. Many people have also "forgotten" or just flat out lied about the amt of stimulus they received... HA HA HA! Like the GOVERNMENT isn't going to check into it and verify every single social on the return... THEY KNOW!!! The stimulus is a huge reason all the deposits and checks have been slow this year they have to verify everyone on a return when someone states they didn't get it or only got part of it... but us tax preparer's are the ones getting cussed out and just flat out disrespected like we can actually control the IRS. FAX TAX has had a difficult first year under new management, I will admit, but people want to get their refunds and think the people working so hard for them finding all deductions and credits possible aren't entitled to any compensation. I am actually an employee of FAX TAX and would like to say for myself that my client's I have filed have been extremely pleased... several even in tears and hugging me because I went above and beyond to help everyone receive the best refund possible. We did have several, I will say NOT VERY BRIGHT employees at the beginning of the season that are no longer with us for that reason... AND I send my sincerest apologies... My job is extremely stressful and exciting at the same time... the phone rings probably 500 times a day, and at the same time u are preparing returns for a client... some days it can be a total night mare, but at the same time I love to see the joy in people's face when u have been able to help them. MOST of my client's could read this now and know exactly who I am because I take pride in my work and strive to give everyone excellent customer service. I guess my point is really that we have families also and we need to earn a living as well to care for them and if some of the people who were complaining would spend one day in our shoes they would totally understand. I wish everyone to fair well with their refunds this year and hope maybe this has answered some concerns or doubts and if anyone has any questions please don't hesitate to call!!!
