Celebration time!

Posted Monday, August 20, 2007, at 6:26 PM

This is our first year to be in Shelbyville for the TWHNC. I can count the number of times I've been to the Celebration on the fingers of 1 hand - 3 times. That's it. When we first married, Jim didn't want to go because he had to work there as a Boy Scout. We did attend once about 1965. Then in the 80s I was fortunate enough to get tickets to box seats a couple of times and really enjoyed that -- except for having dirt thrown on me off the hoofs.

We used to attend small horse shows in Lewisburg, Cornersville, Petersburg, and Belfast. I had friends who showed horses when we were young. Even the small shows were fun. However, there is nothing as exciting as the Celebration.

We have always heard of the heavy traffic and crowds during the Celebration, but all of those visitors spend money in our city and county. We can put up with it for a couple of weeks. A lot of people in other parts of the country have heard of Shelbyville, TN just because of the TWHNC. I'm proud to say I now live here.

I know a lot of people don't like the celebration because of all the traffic. It reminds me of a fair up and down Madison Street with vendors selling t-shirts and BBQ and all kinds of goodies.

Inside the grounds even if you don't like to go watch the horses there's a lot of fun there too and the Food OMG is amazing. Country Ham Sandwiches and homemade donuts. yeah I look forward to it...

But I was thinking today for the past several years Bi-Lo has put a tent in the parking lot and cooked the most greatest stuff out there

(Rib eye steaks, tenderloin, chicken) I guess considering they are no longer in business it won't be there this year (I for one will miss them)

I have lived here quite a few years, and I do not like the increase in the traffic, it does bring a carnival fun time for the city.

I have only gone to the horse show once when a friend gave us tickets.. it is just too expensive to go.

Did you see how many people polled will not go to the show?
