Politics in Tennessee

Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2008, at 3:13 PM

The Tennessee General Assembly was to reconvene today at 12 noon. I haven't heard how things went, but I'm sure they didn't stay long before leaving for lunch.

Forty-seven years ago this month I went to work in the State Capitol. Three years ago I retired. I spent those years in the office of the Comptroller of the Treasury, who is the post auditor for the state. The Comptroller and his staff have many duties other than auditing.

The Comptroller is one of those Constitutional officers elected by the General Assembly, as opposed to being publicly elected. I see no problem with that office being filled in that manner. The 2 men who have held the office for the last 47 years (William R. Snodgrass and John G. Morgan) are both intelligent, upstanding, moral individuals. I could not have asked for better bosses. I can't say the same thing about all of the members of the Legislature.

I thought I had seen everything that could happen during the years I worked in the Capitol. There was exposed corruption, changes in political leadership, shifting of party affiliation, etc. I thought everything that could be done had been done, but I was wrong. In the 3 years since I retired there has been a great deal of negative publicity connected to the Tennessee Legislature, and for good reason. I know you have either heard it on TV or read it all in your papers.

I have a great deal of admiration for most of the 132 members of the General Assembly. I would like to feel that same admiration for all of them. Hopefully January of 2008 is not only the start of a new year but a new beginning for politics in Tennessee.

That was Don Morton. Don had worked for the Comptroller & was Director of State Audit before going to Fiscal Review.

I did an internship with the State Fiscal Review Committee in 71. Were we close? Seems the fellow in charge at the time was Don something.
