How many winters are there?

I know we have already had dogwood winter. It was a cold snap, but the beauty of the dogwood blossoms made it more than worthwhile.

Then it was cool again when the locust trees were first in full bloom.

Now the blackberry bushes are blooming. There should be plenty of blackberries this summer.

How many of these winters are there? These are just 3. I thought there were 5, but I can't remember more. This is a question my grandmother could have answered.

Anytime the white bushes are in bloom, there is a cool spell. The redbud winter, when lilacs are in bloom. Dogwood winter, locust winter, blackberry winter, and dewberry winter. These cool spells will extend into June

I can't answer your question, but after spending 5 years in Florida where we only had one winter (which consisted of it getting down to 40 degrees in January and February) I'm quite happy to be living in an area that actually has a change of seasons albeit more than the original four, but I'm ok with that. Besides, these cool spells are a great time to get out and do yard work.

I have heard of redbud but they are usually blooming when dogwoods are. We always marked Dogwood, Locust and Blackberry Winters. Those are the ones I know of from my childhood. My grandmother was really in to planting (or doing anything else i.e. potty training,etc.) by the signs on the calendar. She never mentioned any others.

All I have ever heard of is Redbud..Dogwood..Locous and Blackberry...I hope that is it because I am ready for those warm sumer nites...
