Arrest Records

Posted Friday, August 15, 2008, at 12:20 AM

I enjoy reading the arrest records in the Times-Gazette. So far I haven't been in there. Probably if I were, there would be no problem with spelling my name correctly. Since it's such a common name (common meaning ordinary, not trashy), I use a middle initial. My husband does the same thing.

We have learned that in Shelbyville, as in Nashville, you don't leave the car running while you run into a market, don't leave the keys in the ignition, and especially don't leave a purse or such in the car in plain view. There is such a thing as temptation, and some folks just can't handle that.

I don't understand theft. If I ever tried it, the cops would be hiding in the bushes watching. If everyone felt that way, it would cut down on crime.

Tonight on TV they showed men stealing an entire heating/air conditioning unit from a house. They couldn't get it in the trunk of their vehicle, so they went to get a trailer and hauled it away on that. They obviously knew how much time they had to complete the theft. The police suggested that these thieves might be in the h/ac business, and this is how they get the units they install.

I've been concerned with the report last week of 15 storm windows and screens being stolen. How long does it take to remove 15 storm windows and screens from a house? It occurred to me that they may not have been on a house at the time they were stolen. If they were on the windows, was that every window on the house, or just what the thieves needed? Perhaps these were the same individuals who stole the h/ac, and this is how they get the storm windows to install on a house.

If they took the storm windows off the house, they not only had plenty of time but worked hard for their booty.

Hmmm, I need some gutters taken down, I wonder.....

Steve, you are funny sometimes....

I am ALWAYS surprised at how imaginative thieves and criminals can be. If they are that smart, why can't they get a job?

I think that it is sad that we actually live in a time where this is the norm. Like Mrs. Brown said we all know better when it comes to purses, wallets, cars, and such. Do we really think when we leave our homes that someone will steal our windows and doors or A/C units? I hope that those people had 8 hungry kids at home and no way to feed them so they stole the A/C to sell and feed them.. I can dream, cant I?

I'm reminded of the old story.

A man had a piano he no longer needed.

He tried selling it at book value.

No luck.

He reduced the price once, twice, three times with no better results.

(I guess he didn't have a Times-Gazette to help him.)

Then he tried giving it away.

No takers.

Soon,he was dragging it to the street with his other refuse.

Even the trash collectors left it behind as too bulky.

Finally,he labeled it with another "For Sale" sign with a price five times its true value.

Within the hour,somebody stole it.

Well reason they stole the a\c unit and the storm windows, was the metal content of such items. Most window frames are made of aluminum. The coils on most a\c's are aluminum. The 25+ lb fan motor gets most of it's weight from copper. When the price of metal drops less of these items get stolen.Where they fail in this is at how they get these items. They had a truck they could drive around and take note of rusty old parked cars.Stop and ask about them. Some folks that arnt so attached to their "Hillbilly deluxe rust bucket" will let you carry them off just to get them gone.If they dont have a title just a bill of sale & v.i.n.. Name, copy of a drivers lisc. or photo i.d. and home number is all they ask for at most scrap yards.
