A Young Man Gone Too Early

Posted Tuesday, December 16, 2008, at 12:23 PM

Last night I received an e-mail from our closest neighbors when we were living in Nashville. Where we lived was considered country when we moved there in 1971. We had two acres, and these neighbors had three. We weren't close together like houses in a subdivision, so we didn't see each other every day. However, we knew we were there for each other if needed. We went out to dinner a couple of times, but mostly we just talked in the yards. They moved in after we did, and they had two children -- a daughter and a son.

I remember an incident when the son was probably in the 7th or 8th grade. He was already home from school when someone attempted to rob our home. The culprit broke in the back door to the basement level, and that immediately set off the burglar alarm. At that time we had a Radio Shack do-it-yourself security system. The alarm worked well though. The young boy heard the alarm and looked out the window to see the guy get in his car and drive away. The boy immediately called his dad who called my husband. You get the picture. This young boy was quite responsible and knew what to do at the right time.

The e-mail last night stated that they had lost their 31-year-old son in a kayaking accident this past weekend. I can't believe that child was 31, and now I can't believe he is gone. It's so tragic.

I hear of people losing their lives in boating accidents quite often, but kayak accidents are fewer. That is probably because fewer people participate in that activity. Now I know two families who have been directly affected by such losses, as I have a friend who lost her husband that way when her sons were small. This young man also had two young children.

What happened in the accident? Did he go down under the water and wasn't able to save himself? Did he get hung under the water? Where did it happen? My son loves to white water raft and kayak and I was just wondering.

My heart goes out to the family.I know the pain they are feeling. Our grandson passed away 3 years ago at the age of 5. Tomorrow is his birthday and he would have turned 8. This is our 3rd christmas without him. Our hearts are still hurting very much.Today has been a bad day for our daughter. She lives in Hickory North Carolina and we would do anything to be with her right now but our money is very very slim. We are just getting all our bills paid each month. As for christmas we are just going to enjoy being with our family with out any gifts this year. But we are very thankful to be able to do that.I will pray for this family.

I don't know what happened to this young man. I do know they had to search for him. He was not a novice at kayaking. We will probably learn more when we go to the funeral home later this week.

I was reading about this accident on news channel 9 web page if this young man is Russell Burrows. It happened in Chattanooga and you can go there to read more about the accident. I will remember this family in my prayers. Its so terrible when a young person is taken from us. My boys half brother was killed in February in a motorcyle accident and it sure touch my heart and hit home. He was only 20 years old and left a small son. I pray for his mom and cant even imagine her life without him.!!!!
