Love at first sight

Posted Friday, October 12, 2007, at 4:14 PM

We hear and see enough alarming news each day so I'm going to tell you a love story.

During my freshman year of college I shared a small off-campus apartment with William Mittwede Jr. We were veterans and really didn't care for dorm life. In fact, we had been classmates from the first grade all the way through high school and had the same birth date, Oct. 8.

Harriet and I were engaged and she was attending school in Bowling Green, Ky., where she shared an apartment with a few other girls.

I was going up to Bowling Green one Saturday to see the MTSU-Western Kentucky basketball game. This was sometime in February. I carried William along for a blind date with one of the girls in Harriet's apartment, Hilda Scott, who is from a small town in Kentucky.

We arrived in Bowling Green, got us a motel room, and drove to their apartment to see the girls. The four of us drove to a nearby restaurant to get a snack and talk. William and Hilda really liked one another from the moment they first met.

As we drove back to our motel to get ready to go back and pick up the girls for dinner and the basketball game, William, said, "That Hilda is my kind of girl."

What an understatement. Harriet and I were to be married in June, about four months away. We thought they were teasing us that night when they laughed and told us, "We're going to get married before you."

They weren't teasing at all. William and Hilda got married in May before we married in June and they are still happily married.

Do you believe in love at first sight?

Yes I do believe in love at first sight. Two friends of our met in North Carolina back in the late 50's, dated less than a week and then got married before the week was out, and are still happily married today almost 50 years later.

Also, when a new girl moved into our neighborhood in 1955 I was struck by her beauty and claimed her as my girlfriend even though she was much too young to date. We married in 1960 and are still happily married today. She still has that beauty that I was first smitten by.
