Mitchell death a great loss

I lost a friend, a buddy and a fantastic athlete when Jim (Pork Chop) Mitchell died of an apparent heart attack this morning.

Jim was found near the front door of his home on Morton Street by a friend who had gone by to check on him. He was rushed to Bedford County Medical Center.

Mitchell, who had lost his eyesight due to diabetes, was a graduate of Harris High School and Prairie View A&M. He starred in football at both schools and was drafted in the fourth round by the Atlanta Falcons in 1969.

He played and started at tight end for 11 seasons. Mitchell, who was regarded as the best blocking tight end in pro football, also held some of Falcons receiving records for several years.

Funeral services will be announced when his two sons arrive here.
