Oh, deer me!!!Posted Tuesday, October 30, 2007, at 10:01 PM
Have you or any member of your family ever run into a deer with a vehicle?
I've had one deer accident. A large doe ran directly in front of my car. The doe was killed. My car, fairly new at the time, naturally, was drivable but heavily damaged.
My son had five deer run into the road in front of his car and an oncoming vehicle. All of the deer were killed. His car sustained some minor damage.
Six years later he had a deer run into the side of his vehicle on Union Street near Shelbyville Mills Baptist Church. The deer survived. His SUV had some fairly heavy damage.
My family must attract deer. A little fawn came up to our rear patio door, apparently saw its reflection and pawed at the door a few times before my wife walked to the door and the fawn ran away.
I enjoy watching the deer, but I'm not a deer hunter.
Our deer population has grown so big it has become a problem to motorists and farmers.
Was it so many years ago when we had no deer at all in Bedford County? And now we have deer all over Bedford County and within the city limits of Shelbyville.
Several years ago when I had my encounter with a deer the Tennessee State Trooper who worked the accident made an interesting comment.
He said the deer were put here for the hunters but the population had become so heavy it had become a problem.
His suggestion was that a charge of one to two dollars be added to the cost of a hunting license and that extra fee should be made available to motorists to help pay for damage to their vehicles.
What are your thoughts on this problem?
