Mistaken Identity

Posted Thursday, January 31, 2008, at 10:52 PM

Have you ever been mistaken for a person you've never heard of or even known?

I've has this happen twice.

The first time was when I was in the Navy and another sailor ran up slapped on the shoulder, called a name I'd never heard in my life and added, from the Bronx.

As soon as I answered in my drawl he realized he was mistaken.

Several years ago my wife and I were out on the town in Atlanta on the Saturday night before a NASCAR race. This man walked up and asked if I was Bob somebody from South Carolina.

I told him that I was from Tennessee. He thought I was kidding him and asked two ot three more times.

Still later he came up and said, "Come on Bob, I won't tell anybody I saw you and your wife won't find out. I promise."

At that point, to keep him from bothering me and also to keep Bob from South Carolina from getting in trouble, I showed him my Tennessee drivers license.

In 1997, I was doing some lazer measuring for frames in Sugar Hill, Georgia. As I was about to leave, I was on the phone with the owner of the shop reporting results of the training of his bodyman. I looked down the driveway and a guy was walking up the driveway. I couldn't say a thing. The owner asked me what was wrong. I said, there's a guy walking in the shop who looks like Dale Earnhart. The owner said, "Oh Yeah" that's my brother in law. I met him, I forgot his name, and he said he goes to NASCAR races with an entourage and a slug of Dale Earnhart photos. He gets in the pits, people asks for autographs, etc. He said he had a lot of fun doing that. I asked him if I could get a 6 inch look at his face with the sunglasses on. IDENTICAL! Nice guy. He told me the back way to get to !-75 without having to go back to Atlanta. He cut over an hour off my trip. Nice guy.

My close friends say I have an exact double in Jackson, MS. Sounds like I was having fun, but it could have caused issues with my soon to be wife since we both lived in the area at the time. Luckily she knew where I was at the time our friends saw my double.
