States and food

Posted Sunday, March 23, 2008, at 3:29 PM

I always find it interesting when traveling in other states to grade the food, regional favorites and also the way it is prepared.

Which state(s) do you think serves the best food?

Tennessee ranks pretty high on the list IMO.

One of the most exciting parts of travel has been finding the best local cuisine.

How ironic that,so often, people wound up in overpriced "tourist traps" or franchise places identical to the restaurants back home.

Remember when folks were advised to "follow the truckers"?

Their picks might not have been written up by Duncan Hines (when he was a food critic-not a cake mix) or appeared in Southern Living but they were clean, affordable, friendly, had good service and food the locals actually enjoyed.

People were also told to find the restaurants near the courthouse for lip-smackin' local cuisine.

NYC probably excells because it has so many cultures to draw from when providing dishes and ingredients.

I suspect that it all boils down to finding where people enjoy making and eating food.

If they delight in the food they create for themselves, those meals might just please others as well.

While visitors go home savoring the taste of exotic recipes and skilled preparation, the joy put in each bite by the local culture probably provides the best seasoning.

Pennsylvania also has Scrapple which is the nastiest food ever...

Maine has the best seafood. I also like little diners in New England that are owned by Canadians where you can get Quebequois food.

And I agree with Steve, NYC has the best food selections.

I like clam chowder anywhere in New England. Pennsylvania has a good variety of foods.

There are several things I do not like about New York City and the northeast but food is not one of them. Whenever I travel there, food is one of the highlights.
