Medical update

Posted Thursday, April 10, 2008, at 10:05 PM

My sincere thanks to all of you for your prayers, thoughts, kind words and concern about the medical condition I am facing at this time.

I entered Vanderbilt University Medical Center Tuesday morning and was released late this morning.

On May 8, I will enter VUMC again that morning and undergo serious cardiac surgery starting about 12:30 P.M. and lasting an estimated seven to eight hours.

There is something very good there for me. One of the top heart surgeons in the world, Dr. Michael R. Petracek, will be performing the surgery.

My faith in God, the prayers of my family and friends and and talks with Dr. Petracek and my kidney transplant doctor, Dr. Harold Helderman, this morning have me feeling very positive at this point in time.

Risks? Definitely.

There will be times in the next three or so weeks I'll be feeling down. I hope to combat this by blogging on other subjects.

I hope and pray this will see me through a difficult time. All of you mean more to me than mere words can express.

Good to have you back Bo. You are, in fact, in very good hands there at VU. Not very good at football, very good at surgery. I think it's safe to say you'll be leading off a lot of prayer lists.

We have been worried about you.

I wish I had some magical words to make you all better I would use them in an instant to help you.

Just know you'll be in good hands and each one of us will be there with you in spirit and praying for your speedy recovery.

Don't feel down, blog to us, we are here, we may not be of much physical help but maybe we can make you smile.

If you need any thing at all you know how to get in touch with me.

Take care, my Friend

You have meant so much to all of us T-G readers over the years, so take it easy and take care of your health. We will be expecting you back and great as ever in no time. You are in my family's prayers.

You seem to have a good frame of mind going into this Bo and take it from someone who has had four heart operations, including by-pass, a good outlook will help immensely.

They have come a VERY long way since the heart operation we knew as kids. I don't know the details, but more than likely you will be up and going about your life in a matter of days. Blogging will certainly be a great outlet.

Best of fortune Bo. I am sure you have many prayers and well wishes, but add ours to the list.

Hello Bo,

Things sound real good, sure hope it goes well for you. Before you know it you will be well enough play ball like you did in the 1950's.

Bo, you and your family continue to be in my prayers.

I wish you the very best. Dr. Michael R. Petracek performed a mitral valve replacement on my mother over 10 years ago and it was a great success. He is known for his knowledge and wonderful skills. May God be with you as you go through your procedure and have His hand on the hands of Dr. Petracek as he performs your surgery.

Uncle Bo,

We miss you here in Texas and want you know that our prayers are with you. I felt compelled to register as I read you/David's blogs daily. I guess you all will have to put up with my right wing comments!

We miss you all!

Bo, thanks for the update on your condition. We needed to know so we would know exactly how to pray for you. It sounds like you are in good hands with the medical team. Of course we know that the Great Physician will oversee all procedures. As one of experience from several cardiac procedures dating back to 1990 I certainly can empathize with you. Both my wife and I continue to pray for you daily.

My prayer for you is that God will continue to keep you in His sheltering wings. I pray that the light of your soul will continue to shine brightly and that you will always know the inspiration that you are to us all.

God bless you.

Friend, co-worker, friendly advisor, late-night confidant ... you've been all of those and more to me over the years, Brother Melson. I wish you all the luck in the world. Knowing your determination like I do, I'm confident you will weather this storm like you have all others. Godspeed to you Bo.

Bo, I work @ VUMC in cardiology and it is a great place to have surgery.

It's been awhile since I've "blogged" the T-G and just read about your pending surgery.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, and same from the "the old hustler" (remember?).

My daughter was rushed to Vandy after the birth of her second child and they took excellent care of her and they were so wonderful with us concerned family members.

I know you're in good hands at Vandy. I will be lifting you up in prayer as well.

God Bless!
