First hurdle cleared

Posted Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at 4:06 PM

Please pardon me for passing on some good news about myself.

On May 21, 1992, a gracious donor lost his life and I received a kidney.

Dr. Robert Ritchie, a great surgeon at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, did a magnificent job of performing the transplant surgery. Dr. Harold Helderman has done an excellent job of caring for me since the transplant.

There was a very real possibility the kidney would be damaged by the dye used last week in the catheterization of my heart to determine the extent of problems. Dr. Pete Fong took every possible precaution during that procedure early last week at Vanderbilt.

Blood tests this morning revealed the kidney was not damaged. In fact, the numbers were better than before I even encountered this latest problem.

God is indeed watching over me and all of you mean more than I, who made a living with words, can even begin to express for your kind, thoughtful and caring messages.

It's great to hear that, Bo. You've been an important part of the Community for many years and we will be keeping you in our prayers.

Funny that your name came up in conversation yesterday at the softball field. I was dicussing softball with Cascade football Coach, Kenny Parker. He was remembering how much a softball pitcher who got away with "crow hopping" bothered you several years ago and you'd take several pictures of it just to prove you were right. We both got a good laugh about it.

Anyway, hope everything works out for you and please keep us updated!

Thanks Josh. Toughest part will be May 8 but with my faith in God, great surgeons and good friends I'll make it.
