Strange foods and combinations

Posted Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at 4:06 PM

What is the most unusual food or strange combination of food you've hever eaten?

I imagine the most unusual food I've ever eaten was in the South Pacific and I don't even want to know what it may have been.

The most unusual, at least to me, combination I've ever eaten was fried chicken and turnip greens...for breakfast. This breakfast fare was in Texas.

I went to a Rattle snake cook off in Texas a few years back. I felt kind of like I was in a Forest Gump movie, they had rattle snake fried, boiled, grilled, BBQ, rattle snake sandwich, rattle snake hash, rattle snake salad, scampi, cocktails, and the nastiest of all was rattle snake milk shake. I tried it fried and grilled and BBQ but the rest of them I just couldn't make it to my mouth with them. It actually wasn't half bad fried and grilled.

I have a friend who eats mustard in her eggs.. now that is really gross if you ask me (but I could do without mustard on anything)

I have eat a lot of strange meals, from shark to alligator, snake and even dog[ by accident]

These kind of foods and others are only strange to us.

I was amazed at how varied the food is from state to state much less from country to country.

Have you ever watched the show Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmerman? He does a lot of different foods from all over.

My husband likes to eat spaghetti noodles with applesauce on top. I like waffles with peanut butter and homemade chocolate syrup.

Spaghetti noodles with applesauce on top? WOW, that is something new... LOL...

When he was in the Central African Republic, my husband ate fried crickets and elephant meat, the latter he later found out was rotten.

The strangest I ever ate was something that I don't think is strange but that some people do think is strange - poutine. Poutine is french fries covered in a brown gravy with cheese curds. I love it, so I don't get why it's considered strange.

I ate so many strange things in S. Korea and, like Bo, I didn't even want to know what some of them were. Of course, I can't forget the bug or worm I ate. Also, we had a lot of dried octopus for snacks. It's had the texture of a jerky.

Anyway, my sister-in-law always combines egg salad and tuna and makes sandwiches out of the strange combo. It's actually very good.

You must not be from the South if you think egg salad and tuna are a strange combo. My son eats ketchup on EVERYTHING from eggs, peas, cornbread to macaroni and cheese. I like cheese, crackers and ketchup. When we were younger at my Granny's house we used to eat mustard sandwiches all the time. I also like mustard on vanilla wafers.

When I was pregnant, I craved KFC and Taco Bell. One night I had mashed potatoes and gravy with 2 soft tacos. And something I like pregnant or not is french fries with vanilla ice cream. It sounds weird, but don't knock it til you try it!! My sister tried alligator once. She said it was good. When I was little I used to eat pinto beans with mayonnaise in them. I don't eat that anymore though!

When I was little my grandmother put the leftover biscuits from breakfast on the stove and later on in the day we would eat those cold biscuits with mustard on them. We also would take leftover cornbread and crumble it in a glass with milk and eat with a spoon. I know alot of people in the south who still do this. We grew up eating souse on crackers and a couple of weeks ago I spoke with someone who had not had souse and really did not know what it was. Once I explained what it was I don't think she will be trying it!

I like peanut butter and bologna sandwiches. I also like to put Doritos on my peanut butter and jelly (strawberry is the best) sandwiches.

When I lived in Philly, I went to a 'fancy' pizza place and actually had their potato pizza - it was fried potatoes with rosemary and white sauce on a pizza. It was really good. I make it sometimes.

I like A-1 steak sauce in my baked potatoes along with the butter and sour cream. Sometimes, I cut steak up and put it inside the potato. It's really good.

The weirdest thing I've eaten was ants in white chocolate. Apparently there's a store that sells "Bug Candy", and our foster daughter thought it would be neat to try the chocolate ants. It was terrible--like finding dirt in a Hershey bar. She decided she didn't like it either and my husband wouldn't even try it, so we ended up throwing away the rest.

Peanut butter, chocolate sauce and waffles sounds wonderful.

I like Miracle Whip or plain white gravy on my french fries.

I HATE Ranch Dressing.

I ate horse once, it was stringy like a roast beef.

I mixed salmon with egg salad instead of tuna once, it was good, but better with crackers than on bread.

I made my own moose tracks with peanut butter, chocolate chips and vanilla ice cream.
