Denmark West

Posted Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at 4:36 PM

Does anyone remember the night Cascade played a Sub-State basketball game at Denmark West?

I first had to check all kinds of records to find out what team Cascade would be playing. I'd never heard of Denmark West. A call to the pricipal there revealed they had never heard of Cascade.

After I informed him Cascade was a fairly new school for students who had attended either Bell Buckle or Wartrace, he exclaimed, "Belt Buckle? Where is that?"

He gave me directions to the school and after a long drive through Jackson on I-40 and turning left on a road just past the McKellar airport, I drove down some small roads and finally arrived at the school. It was an all-black school and the principal, faculty and fans were great people. They gave me a great barbecue sandwich for coming to cover the game.

Their gym wasn't as good as the old Wartrace of Bell Buckle gyms had been. The lighting was perhaps the worst I'd ever seen.

The Denmark West team came on the floor with maybe the wildest pre-game drill I've ever seen. In fact, their first man off the bench broke his leg in the pre-game warmup. This was the type team you definitely didn't want to play in their own gym.

Denmark West got off to a big early lead and Cascade was never able to get back in the game.

Apparently, Google doesn't know that much about them either.

Gee you would think a place big enough to have a West (implying there must an East, North South or something) we'd have heard of.

Actually, the "West" is in reference to the fact that this school is west of Jackson. They also had a Northside and a Southside. The old "West High-School" was before Jackson and Madison County schools merged. West was in a very rural and poor part of Madison County. By-the-way, the "Denmark" refers to the unincorporated community of Denmark, TN. I went to high-school at West for a while. I thought they had shut down the high-school out there.
