Bowling alley on the Square

Posted Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at 2:43 PM

Does anyone remember the bowling alley once located on the east side of the public square?

My older brother, Don, who passed away last Friday, had his first job there as a pinboy and also cleaned the general area and alleys in the pre-dawn hours each morning.

Was this Shelbyville's very first bowling alley?

I personally do not remember a Bowling Alley on the square but I do remember one being where Shelbyville Super Market is now..

Bo, where was the bowling alley located on the East side of the square. Right off hand I do not remember it but maybe if you can refresh my memory I can.

I asked Coy Tucker about this last night as he started bowling when Freeman's Shoe store was the local alley. He stated that it was a little before his time but there was one, it was six lanes and was said to be upstairs He knew someone, like your brother, that had worked as a pin setter.

I will continue to ask a few of our local "bowling Pros" that come around the Alley from time to time.

Many years ago I was told about the upstairs bowling alley on the east side of the square,by "Smokey" Stover, a name that some will recognize.

If I remember correctly, he said the alley was located where the WHAL studios were at that time.

As far as being the first bowling alley in Shelbyville, I couldn't say.

Being where the old WHAL studio was makes sense to me because there was an outside entrance at that point. Somehow or another above Brantley's Drug Store came to my mind which would be in that same area.

Bo, I exchanged e-mails with Jim (Doris) Pilkington who lives in California now. He said that he vaguely remembered the bowling alley on the square but he did not say where it was. He wanted me to say Hi to you from him if I had a chance.

To iloveoldsongs, yes, I remember Smokey very well and I can remember when he bowled with us.
