I was saddened to learn this afternoon of the passing of Coke Crowell, a true legend plus more on the Shelbyville sports scene.
He was an extremely talented athlete in any sport. My sympathy goes out to all of his family. His sons were also multi-talented athletes. Coke and his wife, Billie, raised a really fine family. He was my sports hero growing up and years later I was fortunate enough to play on a few teams with him after I had been in military service. I wish today's young athletes could have seen him play sports. There was a lesson there for everyone. He never rested on his tremendous talents. He played 110 percent at all times. They are every one fine people.
Mr. Crowell's family will be in my prayers.
When we lose some of these legends,I hope we stop to think about what made them significant and what our own legacy will be.
Most of all,I hope we express our appreciation to those who remain with us.
As important as athletic prowess and other wordly virtues are,the traits that make someone a hero have to do with their character and whether they made the world a better place by being here.
Coke Crowell was an MVP on and off the field.
My sympathy goes out to Billie and the rest of the family. Coke was a dear friend even though I had not seen him in more than 30 years.
