Fireworks and fires

Posted Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at 2:26 PM

Unless we get rain in Shelbyville, and more than just a very brief shower, are you concerned about fireworks starting grass fires over the 4th of July weekend?

Yes, I am concerned. I read an article recently that in some drought areas in the Midwest the grass along the tracks was burned because of the sparks from the trains passing by.

The lack of rain and some people's good sense could prove volatile this July 4th.

I was just having this same discussion with a friend, yesterday.

I saw several large grass burn areas in front of Brook Haven on Canon Blvd. Not sure if it was fireworks related.??? One good thing is that the farmers have already cut their first hay so fields aren't standing tall and dry. The bad thing is vandals often target the round bales. Several years ago in Rutherford County as a volunteer FF, I fought round bale fires all night because of some 4th July jerks. This is a good opportunity to remind farmers to place their round bales as far away from roads as possible to avoid bottle rocket happy passer-byes.
