Irritating drivers

Posted Friday, September 11, 2009, at 3:48 PM

What type driver do you dislike driving near most of all?

I suppose we're all concerned with speeding drivers using cell phones and take extra precautions around them.

Something I've noticed recently is an increasing number of drivers who apparently think turn signals are there for decoration purposes.

But I really dislike driving behind or meeting drivers who apparently can't turn left without first making a big swing to the right or turn right without first making a big swing to the left.

I really "love" the people who drive these tanks of cadillacs and then treat them like they are gonna break to turn a corner. Those things are tanks! I owned one, they won't fall apart... I really hate people who text message while driving.. not good.

Turn signals, don't you know they are not on new models!? Not in the south...anyhoo. Or the person who stomps on their brakes every time a water puddle is near them.

Texting while driving has just got to be the absolute worst!I've literally witnessed people drive like they are intoxicated while doing this. As far as turn signals go, they never had them on horses and mules, so most people in Bedford County never got accustomed to them I guess. However the turn signal handle is a great place to hang rubberbands and pictures of your kids from what I've seen.

I drive to Murfreesboro and back every day for work, and there are actually two things that irritate me. One is the driver who is in the left lane driving under the speed limit when I'm trying to pass someone in the right lane.

The second thing that irritates me is the person who is putting on make-up while driving. I, myself, am guilty of putting on lipstick, but I can at least do that without a mirror. I've been behind women (most of whom drive below the speed limit in the left lane) who are putting on eye makeup using their rearview mirror. If they are in that big of a hurry, they need to leave a few minutes earlier.

The driver in the lane beside me that speeds up to get in front of me and then slows down, and then constantly glancing in the mirror to look at me. And people that drive "below" the speed limit, when you have some where to be.

-- Posted by Momof3&3step&1gran on Fri, Sep 11, 2009, at 10:41 PM

The ones that I absolutely don't understand are the ones that drive 10-15 miles (or more) below the speed limit (40-45 in a 55) and speed up when you attempt to pass them (forcing you to get up to 75 to pass them...not that I've ever done that, officer). Then they leave their high-beams on just because you passed them. They dim them for oncoming traffic, then brighten them again once the oncoming traffic has passed.

I'm MUCH more relaxed in my driving since moving here three years ago, but those people still tick me off.

Slow drivers in the left lane are the worst!

Also bad are those who play their music so loud you can feel it in your car.

-- Posted by quietmike on Sat, Sep 12, 2009, at 5:50 AM

These are rare instances when I FULLY agree with quietmike and Thom, in the same blog :) LOL... Our common ground can be found on the road and who would have thought it would be the "left" lane. HAHA.. J/k.

I love the people that use their blinkers just AS they turn... I think it helps them turn better.

And on 231, Dog packing... I hate that.

-- Posted by Evil Monkey on Sat, Sep 12, 2009, at 10:15 AM

People who do not stop at stop signs but you KNOW they see ya coming, so they pull out in front of you just to turn up the road.

Lack of blinker useage.

Careless-ness.

I spent 25 years commuting on the freeways in Los Angeles, 200,000 miles of roughly 750k on a motorcycle. Bad drivers there are the exception not the rule. I believe that almost all driving problems can be solved with good judgement and good manners.

Pet peeves:

Drivers that don't use their turn signals and ignore mine.

Drivers that wait until I'm right at the intersection to make a left turn across my bow, or the others that wait to turn or pull into traffic until they have a half mile space open up.

Drivers that can see that another driver is trying to make a turn or pull into traffic and they block the intersection or close up the hole. (with gratitude for those generous souls who make a space)

Drivers that drive like they are the only ones on the road and everyone else is furniture or props. (Momof3&3step&1gran posted a prime example)

Boom box cars.

Multi taskers of any kind...one great failing of L.A. drivers. I'm just waiting to hear about lipstick lobotomies and mascara brush eye surgery.

Tailgaters. This is my biggest peev in Tennessee. Most people follow way to close at high speed. If the guy in front of you is slowing down to make a bigger cushion for both of you, its probably me.

Thanks for bringing this up. I needed a chance for some therapeutic venting. Driving here is making me crazy. I don't want to do anything rash.

I think people that are 900 years old should need yearly driving test required by law. I see men and women that are in the doctors office for serious vision problems, using walkers, with crippling arthritis that can bearily walk and function...if these people cant function inside there own home or inside of a grocery store then do they need to be behind the wheel of a 4,000 pound hunk of metal that is capable of going 100 m.p.h.?

And it drives me nuts to get behind someone driving a hummer that was built for all terrain for the "military" to drive across extreme rocky, rough terrain and the person behind the wheel will come to almost a complete stop in the road in front of you to turn into the post office parkinglot just because the pavement is raised 1 inch above street level.

Alot of the newer model vehicles on the road today dont come with turn signals, that is an option you have to pay extra for. And why pay extra for it when you can spend that money on your car stereo or your cell phone instead?

If you see a 40 something blonde chick in your review mirror making obscene jestures at you, it is most likely me getting mad at something you did stupid while driving...btw...tell your mom I said "Hi"...lol.

"But, officer, I couldn't have been speeding!" How would they know; if they had ever looked down at their instrument panel, they would have known that their left signal had been blinking for the last ten miles.

Two things: people who step on the brake and then use their turn signals(???!!!) when it should be the opposite.

People who stop in the traffic lane, then pull into the center turn lane, and drive another 100 meters.

-- Posted by Tyger on Sat, Sep 12, 2009, at 3:21 PM

I agree about the left lane and people driving slow . . . it happens to me all the time. It really drives me insane but then I hate most Sunday drivers because I believe you should be doing exactly the speed limit or better yet, 5-10 mph above it. LOL!

I also dont get why people dont use turn signals . . . it is not that complicated of a device. *sighs*

Great subject/blog! Wow, how much time do I have?! I agree with everything listed...and then some. Why do people think they've got to "police" the roads? Are you a cop?! If I want to pass you and go faster, why do you think you've got to cut in front of me and slow me down? How unsafe is that?! And another one I ran into yesterday in M'boro...bikers ridin below the speed limit...THEN when we FINALLY get to Church St to head south on 231, they turn at the light and floor it. What?! Another is when you're on 269 or a lot of these windy, country roads and they're on their "sunday" drive and going under the speed limit. Of course you cannot pass and when you can, they speed up. UGHHHHHH! And my "yankee" father-in-law is one of the worst. "If I want to go slow in the left lane, than I will. It's 'morally' wrong to speed"...try keeping a straight face when that comes flying out of his mouth! Oh my goodness...I'm sure we could all go on and on and on... :)

-- Posted by neighborhood mom on Sat, Sep 12, 2009, at 6:01 PM

I love and pray for you all, but out there on the road its all of you. phones, burgers, drinks, drugs, people, pets, social lives, emergencys, age, type of vehicle, type of roads, lack of respect, minimal understanding of physics, i could go on....

Oh, don't misunderstand. I pray for you all because I'm just as guilty as anyone. Somedays are better than others, but I do struggle with trying to be better.

Of all things though...its just hard not to make it your fault!

While we are on the subject of driving...

My issue is more with the transportation departments. It seems that TDOT's solution to every traffic problem is to throw up a light. It may slove one tiny problem but tends to create three more. Traffic on HWY 96 West (old fort) has increased 100 fold since the light at the interstate was enabled.

-- Posted by gottago on Sat, Sep 12, 2009, at 6:42 PM

How about those folks that exit from the SECOND lane on the interstate? It amazes me that they suddenly decided they needed to get off the interstate just then.

Since moving to Tennessee from California 10 years ago, there has been one thing that really BUGS the H-LL out of me back here...

I'm driving 50+ miles an hour with NO traffic behind me for miles and 'grandpa' decides to pull out in front of me--right in front of me--forcing me to brake to his 10 miles an hour speed...then he makes a turn less than a mile from where he started...MAN THAT PISSES ME OFF!

I mean, there is literally nothing behind me...he could have waited for me to pass by. It's like a disease back here...and it's not just the 'grandpas' doing it either.

Of course, I love Tennessee otherwise, lol!

I just don't know what all you people are complaining about. This is the SOUTH... we don't get in no big hurry.. I mean what is the point!

I will have you know I pay my taxes and I can drive on EITHER SIDE of the road!

The sign may say 65, but that don't mean I have to do it! I get better gas mileage at 45.

I have NEVER lived over 15 miles of where I was born and I still enjoy the scenery. Take time to smell the roses.

It is easier to stop going 25 miles an hour than 85. It might be your child, grandchild or even your dog that runs out in front of me.

For some reason the OLDER I get my hearing is worse but I can feel the radio louder. I guess I didn't notice the noise when I was younger because my radio was so loud. Makes me wonder WHY I need a hearing aid.

As far as the elderly people... my grandmother once told me a tale about a mother sending her son to the store to buy a wooden plate for her mother because she kept breaking the glass plates. The honorable son returns with 2 wooden plates. The mother asked him why he bought two plates... to which he replied.. "One of these days you are going to get old too, so I got your plate early!"

I agree totally about the drivers not wanting to use their turn signals. I have been at intersections where the driver coming from the opposite direction having the right-of-way if they're going straight, actually want to turn left but won't turn on their turn signal, so I could go ahead with my left turn and not wait to see what they are going to do, so rude and this has happened at other intersections too. I also have had people turn out in front of me and I look in my rearview mirror and there is not one behind me, how rude. Bad drivers are everywhere, all over the United States, we just zero in on the ones in the town we live in.

Union,

Your 'poking' causes as many, if not more, wrecks. Please realize that everyone (well nearly everyone) pays taxes and the rules and speed limits are to be respected by everyone, especially highway driving.

As a matter of fact goingseveral miles below the speed limit should be a ticketable offense with the same fine as going to fast. Overall highway safety is dependent on traffic travelling at similiar speed. Please do it.

I forgot to mention earlier, that the "BOOM BOOM" cars are a major aggravation to me also. However there is an electronic gadget that I read about on a website somewhere that when pointed at one of these rolling boom boxes, it will emit a signal that blows the diodes in their amps. I'd love to find this thing and purchase it. Now that would be fun.

Union,

If you're getting to an age that you don't trust your reflexes and must drive at a slower speed to compensate, maybe it's time to hand over the keys.

-- Posted by gottago

Actually it is, but it's rarely enforced.

55-8-154. Minimum speed regulation -- Turnouts -- Passing bays -- Penalties. --

(a) No person shall drive a motor vehicle at such a slow speed as to impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law.

There is on area that really ticks me off it is in front of the Police Station at CVS. I can NOT stand it when somebody is pulling from the parking lot from the entrance and of course there is somebody pulling out the exit also. I have had to completely stop in the road so these idiots can pull out just so I can pull in!

-- Posted by Dianatn on Sun, Sep 13, 2009, at 4:10 PM

Union...if it is "your right" to drive on either side of the road, then you're not paying attention to the "keep right except to pass" signs along the road either. We just passed someone on I-24 heading south and they were in the lane next to the slow lane...doing about 55mph...that is dangerous and could get someone killed if you came up on then DOING the speed limit of 70mph...much less someone speeding. Here's another one (or 2 :)...someone passing on the right on the interstate...and someone weaving in/out of traffic (in the slower lanes). If the fast lane was for the faster traffic and people GOT OVER if they were going slower, it wouldn't be as bad. Ohh, here's another one...someone pulling in front of you and then maintaining speed vs speeding up to pass the car/truck they were trying to go around. I just LOVE riding next to a semi...come on, it's the most dangerous place to be on the interstate. Speed up and get past them.

-- Posted by neighborhood mom on Sun, Sep 13, 2009, at 5:02 PM

How about the semi's that pull into the fast lane...just as they're starting to go uphill? They KNOW they're not going to speed up.

-- Posted by Thom on Sun, Sep 13, 2009, at 6:07 PM

Two of the "stupidest things ever" that I have on my list - that, by the way, grows daily - is (1)those who pull right out in front of you, then turn. Just the other day, a car pulled in front of me at the side exit of a bank and then turned two buildings down at a liquor store but (2) didnt use the turn signal at all! I blessed him with a blast from my horn! (Praise God for my horn!)

I also hate those who refuse to acknowledge that I have my turn signal on and am slowing down; they get closer to my bumper like they're going to scoot me out of their way.

I lived in Germany for several years. It cost me $2700.00 to take the liscencing exam in that country. Offensive and defencive driving combined at 120 hrs.

After that a person would buy DRIVERS INSURANCE. Not car insurance...

and that insurance was bought in two yr blocks that was paid for in full before you got your actual liscence.

Union, you sure are funny. There is no right to drive.

Ya all be careful out there.

HERE'S AN EXAMPLE,...THE OTHER DAY I WAS COMING HOME FROM THE STORE AND THERE IS A HUGE CURVE BEFORE I GET TO MY HOUSE,WHICH I ALWAYS TURN MY BLINKER ON AS I HIT THIS CURVE. I LIVE ON KINGREE RD WHICH MOST OF YOU KNOW TURNS INTO SR82S (LOTS OF SEMIS)SO I HAVE A HABIT OF ALWAYS USING MY BLINKER. SO HERE I AM WITH MY LEFT BLINKER ON COMING AROUND THE CURVE(VERY WIDE CURVE) AND I SEE MY DRIVE WAY.AS I PROCEED TO SLOW DOWN TO ALMOST A COMPLETE STOP AND TURN LEFT INTO MY DRIVE THERE WAS A SMALL BLUE RUN DOWN TRUCK BEHIND ME THAT DECIDES HE WANTS TO PASS ME ON MY LEFT AS I WAS HALF WAY INTO MY DRIVEWAY.THERE WAS NO EXCUSE FOR IT. I EVEN CHECKED TO SEE IF MY BACK BLINKERS WERE WORKING AND THEY WERE PERFECT AND VERY BRIGHT.HOW COULD SOMEONE BE SO STUPID AS THAT?I HAD MY KIDS IN THE VEHICLE WITH ME ALSO,MY DAUGHTER WAS SITTING RIGHT WHERE THIS TRUCK WOULD HAVE HIT US,SHE WAS TERRIFIED. NEXT TO HER WAS MY 20 MONTH OLD SON SLEEPING IN HIS CAR SEAT. I HOPE THAT WHOEVER THE PERSON WAS THAT ALMOST HIT ME THAT DAY READS THIS POST AND MAYBE HE WILL THINK ABOUT WHAT HE ALMOST DID TO MY CHILDREN.
