First frost and snowPosted Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at 4:14 PM
Today, Tuesday, Sept. 22, is the first day of autumn. We can see a little tinge of color in some trees, the grass isn't growing as rapidly and the weeds seem to be thriving.
Based on my admittedly unscientific research, I think we will have our first frost on Oct. 29 and our first snowfall on one inch or more on Jan. 14, 2010. OK, I admit it. I missed the date of the first frost, but I still have a chance for the first snowfall of one inch or more.
A long autumn will end with warm weather taking us up to Nov. 11 for the first killing frost. We will skate by any 1" acc. of snow until March 5th. But we will be tested with ice in mid-January around the 15th and again in early February around the 7th. The last of winter weather will leave on April 8th with a snow ice combo.
Linemen in our area and of old always look forward to April 15th as the end of inclement wather. I have been watching this for 28 years and so far they know what they are talking about.
Quite honestly, I would like to see a warmer and drier than average winter, God knows we have had enough rain.
Last winter was miserable to me.
i would just like to see some real snows..
Wow, everyone's predicting late this year (for snow). First snow last year was 12/11/08 (with school being out on 12/12)...I would prefer it early, in time for Christmas and New Years and then Jan 2, back into the 60's with spring on the way! Just never seems to work that way. :)
First frost on the ides of October.
First major snow in direct relation to Super Bowl Sunday.
"What is your scientific researach telling you about frost and snow?"
That it is damp and cold, lol.
I am seriously convinced we'll wake up to frost on October 5th and just for fun, because I would like to see it myself, I'm predicting a white "Christ"mas!
I figure the harsh weather will turn up about two weeks before we get our new pet shelters finished or right after the pups make a hole in their new digs.
(Maybe,we could put Bitter Apple or cayenne on a brick-and-steel doghouse?)
Bo,
I think the frost will be here about a week sooner than your prediction. Based solely on the iron weeds blooming. But I can barely spell science or scientific, so.....
first snowfall of one inch or more on Jan. 14, 2010.
Thanks for that birthday present in advance.
What is your scientific research telling you about frost and snow?
On the one hand, that they are cold and unforgiving, but on the other hand, under the right conditions, they can be some of the most beautiful occurences in nature, inspiring both the poet and the song writer to reach for heights not previously attained.
