Another Bell Buckle baseball pro

Posted Sunday, March 28, 2010, at 4:16 PM

Most of us know Chuck Taylor played high school baseball at Bell Buckle, went to MTSU and from there moved on the major leagues.

While looking up information unrelated to sports I ran across another Bell Buckle athlete who played professional baseball.

The roster of the Rockford, Illinois Peaches lists Marjorie Hood of Bell Buckle. This team played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Hood played in 1943.

Hopefully someone will be able to provide us with additional information.

Sounds like an article in the making Mr. Melson. I would be very interested in talking with Miss Marjorie if she can be located and is willing.

Margie was a Class of '41 Bell Buckle High School grad, but passed away some years ago (before 2001). Believe Jimmy Hood was her brother, also deceased (see T-G obit 8/13/08). Not aware of any kin in the area. Several years ago, having read something, somewhere about Margie's baseball skills, I chased the same thought that Bo had, but could never find any substantive info. Google doesn't help much, even today!

Some info you probably already know, Bo...the early-90s movie "A League of Their Own" (which I found very interesting) was a fictionalized account of the AAGPBL (see link below)--Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, and (cough!) Rosie O'Donnell. It was sorta based on the 1943 "world series" in which the Rockford Peaches participated. The below site also says Ms. Hood played in 1943 only, for the Peaches, as an outfielder, but the wikipedia account of the movie doesn't list her as one of the participants portrayed in the movie. The site also has a couple of pictures of the 1943 Peaches team, but few players are identified.

That's really cool. I've seen A League of Their Own several times. I actually played on one of the field used in that film shortly after high school up in Evansville.
