NCAA and Tiger at the Masters

Posted Friday, April 2, 2010, at 2:40 PM

Two things are about to take place in sports that I really wonder how fans feel about them.

Should the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament expand to 96 teams?

I may be out of touch on this matter because I was leary when the tournamrnt expanded to the present 64 teams. My reasoning at the time that took place was that the more teams making the tournament an equal number of worthy teams would be left out. There are exceptions of course, such as the exciting run Northern Iowa made this year.

What are your thoughts?

And, will the 2010 Masters truly be a golf tournament or more Tigerama? Is he bigger than the game?

Not an answer to your question, but I have to admit that the boys on "Pardon The Interruption" on ESPN Thursday got me hook, line and sinker with their April Fool's joke. They said that Tiger, on the advice of his counselors, now wanted to be known by his real name of Eldrick, in order to symbolize a clean break with his past. Tony Kornheiser and guest host Dan LeBatard argued convincingly over whether or not this was a good idea, and I was completely taken in.

Eldrick is, of course, Tiger's real name, but the bit about him wanting to be billed that way was a complete April Fool's joke, as Tony and Dan revealed at the end of their argument.

I felt like such a moron.

On the NCAA:

1. You can go too far with a good thing. Look for more blowouts and March Madness being stretched out too far. Keep it at 64 teams.

2. Will a 96-team NCAA tourney finish off the NIT?

On Tiger and the Masters:

The news media -- everything from TV to magazines -- are actually renting space from businesses near the golf course to set up cameras and keep a constant eye on Tiger. Will anyone else get much camera time?

I am not a golf fan at all but I do tend to watch a little of the coverage when he is playing. If he is not in the tourney then I just ignore it.

I think that 96 teams are way too many. I do believe that the NIT will be gone. There are also 2 other post season tourneys that would also be in jeopardy. MTSU was in one of them. I can not recall the name of it.

I say keep it at 65 or add few more teams so there are more than just one play in game. I even thought that maybe having play - in games for all of the #1 and #2 seeds.

Would it be the NIfty Ninety-six?

David, when Tiger is playing, hardly anyone else gets camera time as it is. What would be the difference?

96 teams are way too watered down in my opinion. Why is it that the consensus of fans don't want to add to the BB tourney (I think anyway) yet the NCAA wants to expand? The football fans want a playoff (again I think so) and they have no interest in expanding? Is the NCAA so far out of touch with their fan base or what? In my opinion the field of 64 is one of the best things going, leave it alone.

Tiger is much bigger than the Master's and/or the PGA. He is probably the only athlete that can quit his sport and hurt the entire sports TV and marketing drastically. Without Tiger the PGA takes a huge hit!
